The Isles are largely temperate in climate and well balanced in terrain diversity, featuring lush beaches, vast forests, rolling hills, jagged cliffs, and small mountains, among others. Smaller villages and towns in ancient Kalosian style are under construction on each island, though a general survey of the archipelago reveals very little activity.
Due to the effects of the Shadow Diamond, the weather is permanently marred with a shadowy aura that looms over the entire archipelago, making flying and sailing relatively difficult without special equipment or certain powers.
Known Inhabitants
The Darknight Isles are home to a wide variety of Pokemon, as well as some Humans. Most now live squarely under the New Ruulan Empire's banner, though some yearn to rebel or escape. The varied terrain ensures almost any Pokemon can find a place to call home.
Most of the Pokemon and Humans living on the Isles have learned to cope with the negative weather and find various ways to mitigate it.
Crimson turned his head towards the front, the acknowledgement catching him off guard, "Hm? What'd you say?"
"You're going at this...pretty much alone, right?" Unix the Dragonite elaborated, glancing up at her back towards him, "I'm just curious why? Are you trying to stand as one Pokemon opposed to Melaine or something?"
The Chimchar grinned, "Not exactly. It's a bit more complicated than that. Social image would be a tough angle to play this from, especially on her turf."
"I see," she turned back, facing the destination in front of them, "So why alone then?"
He thought about it, then sighed, "I just want to prevent as much damage from this as possible. This Shadowy stuff is contagious, from what we know. Right now, I'm the only one at risk because I'm the only one stepping up to face her. As long as that stays true, y'all are safe."
There was a pause before Unix spoke again, "Er...don't take this the wrong way, but is that entirely your burden to bear? Shouldn't we be playing a part?"
"We all are," he nodded, "Remember, we're still Intel Squad, right? Gotta know what we're up against before we start fighting them."
"Well yeah, but...that's not what I meant," Unix looked up at Crimson from the corner of her eye, "We've all eventually got to step up and fight these guys. I know you're about saving our skins, but we did sign up to defend against threats like this. This is no different from the Orks or Sithlok."
"We're not fighting yet," he pointed out, "I'm not fighting yet. If we were, I would've attacked her two days ago when I had the chance. We'll find our opening. Trust me on that. And we will all attack together when the time comes."
The two carried on, Unix continuing her journey towards the purple haze in front of them. They could see some land masses, but not enough detail to truly make heads or tails of anything they were approaching. The haze mystified everything. The flashing purple lights loomed closer and closer, adding a sense of dread to the journey. Once they crossed the threshold, the mission would begin.
"Keep your eyes peeled for any flyers," Crimson said, scooting forward, "We don't want to grab attention."
"Oof! Crosswinds!" Unix called out, just in time to lurch to the right. Crimson held on and kept looking forward. At the moment, no one was around. Now would be the time. In a moment, they'd be underneath the purple clouds.
"Once we get underneath the clouds, I'm going to jump, just like we did over the Grand Stadium," he said over the whistling wind that was picking up, "I'll manage from there."
"What, you gonna swim?" the Dragonite snorted.
"Uh...yeah," he answered, no humor in tone.
Before she could even react to that, they were under the clouds. The purple lights started raining down on them. Unix winced as she got hit by several, but Crimson remained steely gazed on the task at hand and undid his harness.
"Alright, see ya soon!" he gave Unix a friendly wave before leaping off her back, somersaulting through the air and proceeding to dive towards the water below, head-first. Like a knife through the air, he cut through the whipping wind. He glanced up just in time to see Unix turning around on a dime and heading back. Now it was just him.
He looked to his left and right, noticing that he was falling faster than the flashing lights he was falling with. He adjusted his body marginally to blend in with the lights, as if he was one of them. It wouldn't fool anyone up close, but from really far away, he'd blend in nearly perfectly. Onward he descended, lower and lower until the water's surface was about to greet him. As he saw the impact coming, he straightened out to a diving posture and closed his eyes, searching for a part of himself he could bring forward, a cool, flowing feeling that would erupt through his body.
The transformation happened precisely as he slipped into the water, the white flash of evolution obscured by the churning sea. When Crimson opened his eyes, he was underwater, gazing at the ocean floor beneath him. He blinked, adjusting himself to the new surroundings. He tried to breathe and found that he could, feeling the oxygen flowing through his body, having been pulled from the water. He touched his neck, feeling the familiar feeling of gills presented there. Glancing down at the rest of his body, he took in the blubbery-blue skin, the cream-colored belly, the web-like skin between his fingers and toes, and his tail, no longer a flame but a fin of his own. He nodded in approval. He was now the Water-Type form.
Instead of picking a direction, he swam up, peeking his head above the water's surface so that nothing but the top of his head, all the way to his now green eyes, was visible. He scanned the water, bobbing up and down with the choppy waves. It took a moment to adjust, but he eventually spotted it...the island in the distance. He remembered seeing several land masses, but the one that captivated his interest him was the one he was on two days ago...New Eve Island. He could see it in the distance, a large looming spire that stuck out unnaturally among the rest of the islands.
That was where he had to go.
