Quiet Universe

Quiet Universe

0.5 INK

Hard science fiction, with one exception; a very unusual form of deep space travel involving quiet zones, stasis fields and deep meditation. Navigators tend to be quiet, deep and highly sensitive.

Introduction

Humanity was almost wiped out after disturbing an alien colony. We lost the resulting war, but a small remnant was spared under strict rules which limit the use of advanced weapons or autonomous machines. A treaty was created defining the rights of native planetary inhabitants against invasion or interference. Humanity divided into two major factions; the Imperialists who believe in Human Supremacy over the universe, while the Federalists believe in peaceful cooperation and harmony with alien civilizations. The capital of the Federalist group is on planet Aspenar, which has an unusual culture; 90% of the population have high-functioning autism (Aspergers) while the 10% are highly sensitive empaths.

The Imperial faction has its capital on Mars. It operates a feudal society with strict hierarchies. One of its colonies is planet Meridian, but recently Aspenar received what appears to be a long-range alien distress call originating from a planet close to Meridian. Starship Rainbow is sent to investigate.

Toggle Rules

No magical technology allowed. Except for deep space quiet zones, must follow plausible laws of science.

No profanity or obscenity allowed.

Deep space travel can be discussed in more detail as part of the roleplay. It requires a starship to move to a quiet region of deep space with very low gravity, to minimize all activity on board and for the crew to sit in quiet meditation. In the quiet region there is minimal interaction with the rest of the universe and the ship becomes detached, able to move into another quiet zone elsewhere, causing only a slight ripple in the space time continuum. Relativity is not violated because the ship was not interacting with many external forces. An external stasis field is used for complete isolation. Navigation is achieved not by technology but through deep meditation. The navigator must visualize the new location in as much detail as possible. After a while the ship will be in both locations at once; this is possible only if there are minimal external forces acting on the ship. When the process is complete, the starship will have slid gently into the other quiet zone.

The ship's central AI had not yet fully recovered from the system failure around the fifth planet of the Meridian star system. Dr. Falkorian had to tediously re-code most of the key navigational algorithms. The human crew had successfully established a stable orbit around Meridian, the second planet of this star system, and now he could return to his own duties fixing the AI, while allowing Captain Deveraux to look after the mission; find and rescue whoever sent the distress call from Meridian.

The first officer, Daniel Altarei, had tasked Dr. Falkorian with scanning all communications, but to do that he first needed to fix the navigational systems. Daniel was a good engineer and worked well with Dr. Falkorian, generally allowing him to focus on his preferred scientific work, only asking for help when the engineering team needed a second opinion or insight.

Dr. Falkorian had grown familiar with the Aspenar culture of the crew; about 90% were high-functioning autistas (autistic spectrum disorder); very efficient with well defined tasks, but struggling with unfamiliar situations. Andrew Falkorian was also a high sensitive, intuitive empath, ideally suited to the naunces of deep space navigation, but prone to anxiety and emotional exhaustion.

A junior officer, Ensign Plex, was assigned as steward to Dr. Falkorian, specifically to watch him for signs of exhaustion and burn out and to protect him from dangerous situations; as a result he would never be selected for a landing party or EVA work.

After several months of repair the ship functions as normal. However the cause of the systems failure remains unclear. The fifth planet seems to produce powerful electromagnetic fields, showing unusual patterns.

Meridian

Starship Rainbow is sent to Meridian star system to investigate a distress call. It appears to originate from the fifth planet, but was actually received from the second planet and re-transmitted by a complex system of moons around the fifth planet. The ship is partly damaged by electromagnetic fields that surround the fifth planet, which they have called the The Sentinel.
