The Archmage of the Sapphire Empire

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Tearen Wover

Groups

The Sapphire Empire consists of The Azure Citadel and the large city of We'Darastri, as well as much of the Sapphire Desert on Gaia. It is ruled by Suzerain Nedelethakor, and is the premier destination for all arcane pursuits on Siv'en.

Description

APPEARANCE

Eustace 'Grey' Therello is rather tall and somewhat built for someone his age and walks with noble bearing. He wears heavy blue robes with matching hood and cloak at all times, and usually has one or two heavy grimoires lashed to his back with thick leather straps. Grey has a small, trimmed beard and mustache of silver hair, and his head is topped with a mop of white, permanently messy curls. His eyes are a stormy grey and cyan color, and his face is drawn and worn with deep frown lines and crows feet. Grey also has a broad nose and arabian features, all wrought in sun-baked skin.

HISTORY

Grey's role as the Archmage of We'Darastri has been long and arduous. He was 'rescued' as a boy from a trading caravan attacked by Suzerain Tyretlethen, who deigned to let the toddler Eustace live in service as a thrall until the age of thirteen, when the Suzerain begain his magic tutelage. Grey excelled quickly over the years, gaining great skill as a wizard and spellwright, but gaining little in the ways of friends or company. He is of a draconic mindset, more than human, and generally finds the company of his own kind grating and insufferable. As such, he gained great favor in the eyes of Suzerain Tyretlethen, and so the great blue dragon king took Eustace with him on a trip to Terra. There, at the age of 55, Eustace was given oversight on an apprentice from the Suzerain's brood: Theredax. He considers Theredax as a son, despite the dragon princeling now being large that Grey himself. The trio returned to Gaia a few years ago, where Tyretlethen quickly resumed the reigns of his long-standing Sapphire Empire, with Grey right by his side as always. One fateful day, Grey and Theredax were sent away on a crusade against the Skyfall Kingdom, seemingly at random. When at last they were summoned home, Grey returned to find Tyretlethen slain and his favored concubine, Nedelethakor sitting on the Suzerain's throne. Having sworn an oath to the Sapphire Empire itself and not his erstwhile father, Grey is honorbound to serve this new Empress, but does so with little pleasure...

Grey sauntered into the bar, his crow familiar flapping in his wake, squawking loudly. The dark bird landed on the bar stop, Grey swiftly taking a seat on the bench just next to the crow. The man was aged looking, his head wreathed in a silky, fragrant smoke from the burning cigarette in his mouth. He blew out a puff of smoke, small, glittering sparkles filling the air amidst the choking cloud. His weary eyes perused the bar through half moon glasses, looking and signaling for a bartender.

Grey waved some of the glowing smoke away from his face, and sighed briefly. "Let's make it a gin. A big one, if you'd be so kind." the aged wizard said, tossing out some money onto the counter with a dejected toss. He took another drag from the curious cigarette, the tip burning a bright emerald green. Small, orange balls of flame seemed to be floating around him slowly now, though a skilled mage would recognize them as simple illusions. It was the kind of crap he did to keep himself sharp. Why? He didn't know.

Grey shrugged and tapped the bottle, the cap immediately spinning and removing itself as the wizard reached into his pocket and withdrew a small pouch. Pouring a drink into a glass, he tossed some of the purplish powder in, a small flash and puff of smoke issuing forth from the liquid. The gin, or whatever it was now, was bubbling, with a slight yellow tint. He tossed back a drink of it and sighed heavily, his Crow familiar cooing and croaking softly. He chuckled loudly at the comments of the attractive young lady a few seats down. Yeah, a barbarian was pretty tame compared to what showed up here.

Grey snuffed one of his magical cigs out in a nearby ash tray before pull another out of seeming thing air. Pressing his thumb to the end of it for a moment, the tip ignited, and the wizard began to take drags, but slower, less hurried ones. He pulled out a small, ancient looking text and flopped it open to a random page, reading with mild disinterest.

Grey calmly taps his finger on the alchemical cig, a bit of greenish glowing ash tumbling into the tray. "You needn't be a passive bigot, little lady." he said will a mild scoff. Honestly, the nerve of some beings...

Someone might blink, and suddenly notice an aging man sitting at a seat in the bar, pulling out a strange looking cigarette out of thing air. Pressing his tip to the head of the cig, it lit up and ignited, the ash burning a sizzling green. A moment later, a Crow emerged from the following cloud of smoke. The man had an air of world weariness about him, his piercing yet disillusioned eyes peering through brassy half moon spectacles. Taking an ancient looking tome from his blue jogging jacket, he flopped it open on the counter and waved for the attention of a bartender.

Grey whistled loudly and sharply at Kisa, a stern look on his wrinkled face as he took another drag of his alchemical cigarette. He blew the smoke out sharply, carrying with it a heavy scent of herbal incense. What was it with the working class these days? Always convinced their meager personal dramas were so much more important than their place in the world. Goodness knows its why they never escaped dead end jobs like these. His fingers rapped on the table impatiently.

Grey exhaled sharply, the fragrant smoke wreathing his head in a strange smelling haze. He scratched his temple with the cigarette hand, plugging the strange cig between his lips as he turned the page of his book and flicked his hands in a strange gesture. A few dollar bills appeared tucked inside of Absinthe's belt. "One white russion, very, very dry, if you'd be so kind." he said, his gravely deep voice coming somewhat soft. He didn't bother to look at the fey creature, but kept his cyan eyes plastered to the tome in front of him. His crow familiar, however, looked at the fairy with vested interest, waddling over to her, tilting its head.

The elderly wizard, smirked, which was more of a thanks than he would give to most of the other intellectual lightweights in the bar. He took the glass gingerly in his hand, the alchemical cig resting between his fingers, glowing a bright green that matched Absinthe's dress. With a light tap, a bit of the ash fell into the thick drink, and there was a brief puff of smoke and flash of light. The drink was now bubbling, taking on a deep fuchsia color. Taking a light sip, he set it down. Kerrick the crow reached into one of his pockets and withdrew a few extra bills, placing them before the woman with a quick jab. It squawked softly and spoke in a strained voice. "Pretty lady! Rawk!" it cried, fluttering slightly. Grey chuckled, and took the final drag of his cig, it seeming to disintegrate into nothing.

Grey took another sip of the strange, arcane drink, closing his eyes in contentment. He dabbed a bit of the strange concoction from his beard before tapping the page of the book he was on, the page lighting up brightly. He closed the book and scooted it off to the side. Leaning heavily on his elbows, he looked Absinthe over, with his steely, old eyes, another unlit cig appearing between his lips. Kerrick fluttered back onto his shoulder, keeping a wary eye on the surroundings.

"One doesn't see many fey types away from the woods. What draws you to the city, pretty?" he said, neither emphasizing the rhyme, nor anything at all. All his actions had an air of melancholy withdrawal about them, of someone who had long ago stopped trying to live.

Grey was old, wise, and well aware of the secrets of the world. Fey were no exception, and he knew their nature. With a gesture of his hands, which was seemingly innocuous to most, he cast a small abjuration on himself, making him immune to most minor magics. Following through with the gesture, he pushed his spectacles higher on his nose. Had he been any younger, he might be vulnerable to the fairy's wiles, but as it was, he just found her to be a minor distraction from his otherwise dour life. He pulled out another one of his cigs, and offered it to Absinthe, lighting his own with just a brush of his finger.

"What's your name, fairy?" he asked, his gravely voice both mellow and disconcerting at the same time. If she took the cig, she would immediately find herself far more stronger than usual, as Grey had enchanted this pack with a strength altering spell. Kerrick mentally informed the wizard that several uppity looking lesser mages had walked into the bar.

Grey waved his hand in a mild mockery of her own gesture, smirking. "Whichever you like most." he said simply, the cigarette seeming to disappear in his hand after a mild curling of the fingers. "I like smoking. Besides, for some of us, life is a terminal illness." he said, blowing the smoke out, the large cloud billowing. With a little squint of the eyes, it began to wrap itself into ornate geometric shapes, small flecks of glittering magic winking in the clouds. It was a cliche trick, but Grey didn't really care what was cliche right now, since there were about four of them milling about in the bar right now.

Grey grunted at all of the heat suddenly in the bar. Standing up, he waved both his hands in wide circles, chanting lowly for a brief moment, before tossing his fists together. There was a small shudder of power in the air as a large gust blew through the bar, carrying the lingering heat of the flame away from him and the rest of the bar. It would also probably murder some people's hair, and even blow over some lighter patrons. Not that he really cared.

With an aged grunt, he sat back down at the table and withdrew his magical text, the page he had marked still shining brightly. He opened the book and waved his hand over it, the light fading.

Someone might blink, then suddenly realize that there was now and older looking man sitting at the bar, his head wreathed in a lavender colored, fragrant smoke billowing from a strangely green burning cigarette. With him was a rather beautiful looking crow, who squawked once and looked about the bar diligently as his master withdrew an ancient looking text from his jacket. Flipping the book open to a far back, page, the man took a long drag on his cig, the tip burning a deep emerald color. Small glimmers and sparkles issued from his mouth every time he exhaled, and there was an air of innate mysticism, if not a somewhat melancholy demeanor. He paid no heed to anyone in particular.

Grey slammed the cover of his magic tome shut in a small outburst of impatience. He rubbed his temples slowly, his alchemical cigarette still burning fragrantly in his right hand. Waving to Kisa, he grumbled lowly, before calling out. "Something strong, dear, to drown out the riff raff." he said, taking a violent pull from his cigarette. Kerrick the Crow, his familiar, squawked and kept his eyes on the patrons, always on guard for his friend and master. The old wizard held out his hand palm down, and after blinking slightly, turned it over to reveal some bills.

Grey shouted from across the bar, his voice enchanted to be far louder than normal. His shout was directed at Cross, which was ironic, because the older wizard was indeed very cross. "Oh just get on with it and shut that blasted demon up!" he shouted, his eye's thinning subconsciously. He had no patience for this type of thing, especially when it was happening so distractingly close to him.

The wizard's crow squawked warily at all of the canines suddenly in the bar, but Grey himself paid the mutts no heed. With a simple gesture, waving his arms wide around him, the air would shimmer slightly before settling back down. He then made a small move with his arms, a strong thrust, and sighed deeply. Hopefully these simple spells would keep any possible danger at bay. He then raised an eyebrow as a rather strange Theseus type and young woman limped into the bar. The wizard pushed his glasses up on his nose, took a drag of his cig, and approached the two swiftly, his Crow familiar following close behind.

"I can do some stuff. What's it to ya?"

Grey shrugged, taking a drag from his cigarette, the fragrance heady and thick. He exhaled sharply, the smoke glittering and shining strangely. "I'm called Grey, but the name is Eustace, if you wanna get personal about it." he said, flicking the cigarette into a nearby waste bin, it seeming to snuff itself out. "Yeah, I can take care of your friends, no problem. Let's go take a look, yeah?" he a offered. With a grandiose gesture using both of his hands in swirling motions, there was a flash of force in the air around the two, as the wizard cast a small glamor on them that would increase their speed tenfold. "Off we go."

Grey turned his head and coughed, but was actually pretty much just rolling his eyes covertly. Kerrick the Crow squawked along with him, the empathy link between them easily visible. "Yeah, sure. Nice to meet you. I'm thinking we should probably get a move on so the don't go and do something stupid, like die." he said, raising his eyebrows sharply. Honor indeed. This conan reject was lucky that Grey wasn't feeling half as snarky as usual that night.

Grey arrived at the beach with the larger man, breathing not exactly heavily, but it was definitely apparent he was not the physical type. He knew he should have teleported. Kerrick the Crow roosted on the wizard's jacketed shoulders as Grey strode towards the two unconscious bodies. Blood everywhere, sand tossed up, clothing torn, yadda yadda yadda, he'd seen it all before. With a sight that didn't exactly convey empathy, he thrust his arm out towards the woman, closing his eyes and muttering a long, powerful incantation. The wind whipped up slightly and his hand glowed a with a piercing light as the injuries knitted themselves back together with a somewhat disconcerting slithering sound.

As the white light faded, Grey took a deep breath and looked at a strange time piece on his hand that illuminated itself. Frowning slightly and tapping it, he turned to the smaller of the two, ironically, the male. His burns looked rather severe, but the damage looked mostly cosmetic. With another breath, he thrust forth his other hand at Xian, the burned skin melting and reforming itself underneath a somewhat dimmer light. It was good he'd decided to prepare these today, though it was a standard precaution for him. Once the work was done, he flicked his fingers in a dextrous way, producing a strangely patterned cigarette. With a brush of his thumb, the cig lighted itself, and the wizard took a deep, greedy breath. He blew the ensuing smoke at the moon overhead, the smoke taking the shape of several lines, framing a set of stars around the lunar circle.

Grey only plugged his fragrant cigarette into his mouth, speaking with a mild mumble. "Name's Grey." he said, quickly turning his attention back to the stars. With a side though, he flicked his pinky finger and thumb at Doji's kimono, and mumbled "Derenthyx". There was a slight vibration through the air as the small line of magic wrapped and melded with Doji's clothes mending them rather handily. Magic was so very useful, and he hated when people went and used it like a gun instead of a tool. Amateurs. Grey was indeed an elderly wizard, but unlike Ganalf the white of legend, Grey was far more world weary and disillusioned. Grumpy and snide as well, when he felt like it.

Grey scoffed outwardly. Beyond him indeed! He personally knew the name of the mad daemon sultan that howled blindly at the center of the universe! He had seen the true face of the Crawling Chaos! But that was neither here nor there. If this strange woman wanted to sit on her high horse, then so be it. "That's nothing. Cheap tricks like these are what keep me from feeling like a total lout." he said, taking another drag from his alchemical cigarette. Besides, he thought to himself, there's no point in getting with every beastie and boogie man in the universe.

There was a small shimmer in the air as the wizard Grey popped into the bar with a small gust of wind, an alchemical cigarette already smoking in his mouth. He withdrew a small arcane text from his jacket pocket, flipping it open to a glowing page. With a small wave of his hand, the page dimmed itself. Kerrick the Crow fluttered seemingly out of nowhere a moment later, landing on Grey's shoulder with a small squawk. Plugging the cig in his mouth, Grey whistled for a bartender as he scribbled in the ancient looking text with a mechanical pencil.
