Small towns have their charms. However, these charms often have little to do with the people themselves, and in fact, the people can often drag them down. The town of Hillchester on the East Coast is no different. It's surrounded by stunning views and is generally a very pretty town. The people, however, are notoriously close-minded. Its population is mostly white, and it doesn't take kindly to outsiders. It's also notoriously intolerant of anyone who doesn't fit into their idea of normal. That is, white, straight, Christian, and American. Some who have settled there don't fit into that, and they're lucky if they're just tolerated. Others have received threats, have been run out of town, have been refused service, simply for being who they are.

However, this isn't widely known. Everyone just views it as an idyllic, small town that's perfect for hiking, painting, and photography. Which is why one new family moves in. A family looking for a fresh start. Somewhere that isn't the city, somewhere they can flourish.

Two boys meet. Sparks fly. But, in a place like Hillchester, can this love ever really become anything real? Or will the town smother the flames?

"It's just going to be us and some of our neighbours. They're new to town, they need a good first impression of the people here." His mom said as she handed him a section of pepper to cut. Spence knew what that meant. They needed to meet to few decent people in the neighborhood so they wouldn't turn and run in the other direction. Which meant the Lees, a small handful of their neighbours, and the newcomers. It was small, but that didn't mean Spence's anxiety wasn't through the roof. The peppers he had been chopping were cut into miniscule cubes at this point. It didn't escape his mom's attention. "Peppers are perfect, honey," she said, taking them from him and emptying them into the salad. "You doing okay?" She asked. When his mom asked that, she meant it. "Alright. Just... new people coming into town, into our house. Freaks me out a little," he replied, and she nodded. "They're probably lovely, Spence. And if they're not, well, we'll hide the dessert so they'll leave earlier," she said with a grin, one Spence managed to return.

"So, table set, salad done, enchiladas in the oven, and nibbles left in convenient places. Drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic chilling in the fridge, and cheesecake setting in the fridge. Anything else?" She asked. She'd been in the kitchen for the last two hours, and sure as hell didn't look it. Her hair was immaculate, her dress neat and tidy, and not even her lipstick was smudged. "Nope. Is Patrick going to be home in time?" He asked, and she glanced at her watch. On cue, Patrick, Spencer's step-dad, waltzed into the kitchen, in a pristine shirt and tie. "Aren't we a good looking lot?" He asked, resting a hand briefly on Spence's shoulder as he passed. The brief touch was reassuring, making Spence feel a little more grounded. Before any of them could say anything else, the doorbell rang. "Spencer, why don't you go answer that?" He swallowed as he nodded, brushing his hands briefly on his trousers before opening the door.

"Mario! We're about to leave," his mother's voice rang through the well-sized home they had. Moving boxes were both opened and unopened lying around the home's spot. Patton sat in a decently sized bedroom on the bed scrolling through his phone. He didn't want to leave his room, meet new people. He didn't want to move in the first place, this was all because of his fucking father. An audible sigh would escape from the male's lips as he groaned getting up from his bed. Throwing on one of his favorite hoodies, and a pair of black jeans he'd walk downstairs his mother holding a tray wrapped up in saran wrap. He'd look towards the woman, why did impressing these people matter? "Why does it even matter? It's not like they'll like us once they find out what Dad did," he complained as his mother just stared towards him and sighed before heading out. New of their neighbors hosting a party, gave his mother an excuse to work with her "people magic". Patton didn't necessarily care for meeting other people, they would know who he was....who his family was soon enough. Taking out his phone he'd scroll to the group chat with his old friends from L.A

edgelord patty to those meddling kids
y'all this fukin sucks. imyasm pls save me. she's makin me go to this stupid welcoming party. its so dumb.

mama mitchell to those meddling kids
im dead, u fuckin edgelord deal with it. we miss your gay superstar level edge ass but you need to power through this.

Rolling his eyes towards Mitchell's response he'd pocket phone as he would walk with his mother to the nearby neighbor's house as his mother began to lecture him on his attire. How it wasn't proper of him, and she was gonna have to teach him something about fashion someday. Rolling his eyes once more, a habit of his, he would stand directly behind his mother. As she rang the doorbell. Her olivine eyes sparkling as he looked away eager for this to be over.

Spencer fixed a welcoming smile on his face as he opened the door. Their new neighbors stood on the other side. The woman reminded Spence a little of his own mother, if a little more glamorous. At first glance, he thought the boy was a few years younger than Spence, but he realized that he was actually closer to Spence’s age than first glances would indicate.

“Hi! You must be the Fosters, right? I’m Spencer,” he said, actually managing to sound cheery and upbeat. As he closed the door behind him, Spence’s mom and Patrick materialized, huge, genuine smiles on their faces. “It’s so nice to meet you!” Sarah Lee enthused, holding out her hand to shake. “Can I get you guys some drinks? Come on, come in, you’re early!”

As the adults gushed and began to engage in small talk, Spencer’s attention turned back to the boys. He was older than he looked at first glance for sure. Spence resisted the temptation to shove his hands into his pockets, folding them across his chest. Even though everyone else was equally dressed up, he couldn’t help but feel a tad overdressed as he looked at the hoodie-clad boy. Spence smiled a little. “What year are you in? I’m a junior, I’d love to fill you in on all the stuff they don’t tell you about the school,” he said with a smirk. He had to remind himself not to let himself get too attached or friendly. He didn’t want only to make a friend for him to fall into the mindset of this town and hurt him if he found out who Spence really was.

Emma would shake the woman's hand before her olivine eyes laid on her son. "Sorry for the lack of introductions, my name is Emma, and this is my son Mar...Patton," she corrected herself middle of the sentence before she would walk off with the adults leaving the two teenage boys with each other's company. Looking at Spencer, who he mentally decided would need a nickname if they became more than just friendly neighbors, he'd notice he was sort of dressed up. Somewhat making Patton feel underdressed. He'd stare at the boy, having to look up towards him due to the height difference between them and he'd shake his head before he'd answer the question. "Um, I'm going into my junior year too.......does this place have a theater class?," he'd bluntly ask not looking very impressed. He ached for L.A he missed the big city he called home.

Spencer, however, was somewhat cute. He looked like the type b dudebro, not as buff or as big as the type a, but still just as masculine. Which was somewhat Patton found....attractive. He began to fiddle with his hoodie string, not really sure what to do, aside from wait for an answer. His mother walked over to hand him one of the sodas they had offered, before returning to talk to the other adults. Sending a silent thank you, he'd open it and nurse from it.

If he was going to make friends, Spencer didn't seem like the worst choice. It'd help to have someone used to the area, so he didn't get lost.

Patton saying he was a junior as well was a relief to Spence, and he wasn’t quite sure why. But the slight tone of disdain in the question made something in Spence want to turn and just leave the conversation, preferably followed by a few hours in a darkened room where he could overanalyse the whole situation. But instead he stayed put, tightening the folding of his arms. “Um, yeah, I think so. Think it’s kinda shit though,” he added, lowering his voice a bit. “In our freshman year they tried to get the whole freshman class involved in a musical and... yeah, it went spectacularly wrong. Every single night. On closing night the teacher was so drunk he passed out during the speeches, and that was one of the smaller things to go wrong. They stopped making us all do shows after that. I actually don’t think they’ve done a musical since because they have such a hard time getting guys involved,” he said. The small town attitude was that musical theatre was “gay” and that no straight guy would ever do it. Plays were somewhat acceptable, but even the more bigoted in the school viewed them with disdain.

Out of the corner of his eye, he could see his mom beckoning them towards the dining room. “Our football team likes to think they’re great, but I can’t remember the last time they won a game. Word of advice, steer clear of the jocks. A few of them are okay, but they’re hard to differentiate from the ones who still use the n word, think illegal immigrants should be fired back over the border with a slingshot, and think they’re god’s gift to humanity,” Spence continued as he led Patton over to the dining room.

"Sports aren't really my thing, I love to perform. Maybe I could talk to the school board....did you just say there are still people who use the n-word here? Are we talking the one with an a, or the hard -er one?" he asked as he tilted his head. He knew there was something wrong with moving to a smaller town! They were gonna be backward as fuck, noticing Mrs. Lee motion for them to come over, Patton would follow Spencer eyeing him. Maybe a friendship wouldn't work out, if he lived in the small town, he obviously shared the beliefs right? Fuck these are probably the type of people to pray before every meal and counteract homosexuality with "It's against the bible". Rolling his eyes he'd scoff before looking over to his mother, she seemed rather happy. Hearing one of the adults ask what brought them to move here, he remained silent while his mother spoke. "Oh, Patton needed a change of scenery. Complications happened with his father, and Patton took it really hard. So we decided to come out here for a refreshing small town," she lied.

All Patton wanted to do was scream the word lies in her face, she knew her husband was the reason they fucking moved. She was too! Because they couldn't live without conning people, it was such a fucked up thing. Instead of vocalizing his irritation, he would just shit awkward avoiding eye-contact with other people. Glancing again at Spencer before looking back down. Now he was gonna think Patton was some troubled kid. Great.

”Ending with A usually, but pretty sure I heard one of them say it ending with -er when he was really pissed at someone. The exception rather than the rule, but still.” He said with an eye roll. He sat down at the dinner table beside Patton, the only seat left. He wondered how long it would take before the rumors about Spence reached Patton, and how he’d react. There was something, deep down, that screamed he didn’t want that to happen, that maybe he should just say it face to face and deal with the reaction there and then. He wasn’t sure he could deal with that though. For some reason, he wanted Patton to stick with him.

Sarah Lee raised an eyebrow at the explanation as to why Patton and his mom moved away, sipping her wine. “Oh, honey, trust me, you did the right thing. When I divorced my ex-husband, I considered leaving, moving across the country. But Spence’s whole life was here, and I thought that maybe he’d want to stay in contact with his biological father.” Spence made eye contact with her across the table, and she paused for a second, making eye contact with him. He held it. “There was one more incident that made me want to get myself and Spencer out of this small town. But... it didn’t work out.” Her perfect smile returned. “And then I met Patrick, and it was worth it,” she said with a small shrug. “Even if I am considered the witch of the town. Divorcing my poor, perfect husband and then remarrying? I may as well be the devil,” She said with false shock and a laugh. Her laugh was contagious, and never failed to make Spence smile, even just a little bit. He was doing his best not to think about Brian, about the last time he’d seen him. A scar on his side tingled at the memory, and he rubbed it without even thinking.

Patton looked towards the woman and then towards Spencer. Only if his parents were divorced, maybe they could have stayed in L.A, "My husband is a wonderful man, don't get me wrong. He just makes....things more complicated than they need to be." the woman explained before Patton rolled his eyes, shifting again. "Maybe if he didn't con people," he'd mumble under his breath. Only Spencer could hear him, but he looked towards the adults. His mother eyeing him, he'd avoid the repetition of what he said. He would groan before he'd look at the two. He couldn't fuckin believe that there was no theater class, and it was shitty if there was one. His mother was never going to hear the end of it, he was so livid. He couldn't perform! He wanted to, he lived for the performance. He'd slide out his phone, discretely, before he'd check the messages.

mama mitchell to those meddling kids
hows it going u gaylord

bi bi bi to those meddling kids
yeah we wanna know sorry for u missing us were just tht gr9 ig

He'd roll his eyes, this time happily, before sliding it away. His phone buzzing a few times in his pocket, he didn't know why. But he felt maybe, even without theater, Spencer could be someone he couldn't just leave alone, why? His thoughts were cut clear, when his mother's voice ran in his ear. "Well, I think you're a lovely woman Sarah. The town doesn't know what they're talking about, saying you're a witch. You did what was best for you and Spencer. I hope Patton and him get along, my little boy is going to need someone to show him around. I lived here when I was younger, but I'm afraid I only know a few things from my childhood, and it's seemed to change a bit," her voice a kind tone, as she looked over to the boys smiling.

It seemed to be a good thing that Spence and Patton didn’t hate each other, because Sarah and Emma seemed to be getting along swimmingly. Spence found himself wondering how long it would be before Sarah shared the exact incident that made her consider moving out of town. He tensed despite himself, but Patton’s muttered comment didn’t escape his notice. He raised an inquisitive eyebrow, but didn’t say anything.

A smirk, however, did appear on his face as Emma referred to her son as “her little boy.” He did his best to hide it, but a moment of eye contact between Spencer and his mom nearly broke that composure. “Trust me, Spencer knows this town like nobody else. Good and bad. Patton will be in good hands,” she said, starting to serve out the food. The conversation moved on and Spencer found himself needing to say something to the boy beside him.

“So, uh, I’m no Ian McKellen, but if you want help getting the theatre department sorted out, I... I guess I could help you out? I’m not really involved in anything else, so I have a lot of free time.” The words were out of his mouth before he realized what the offer could mean. Nobody cared about theatre in their stupid town. Nobody cared enough to want to try and get it’s shit back together. But there was something about it that suddenly drew him in. The thought of being someone else for a night? And he looked at Patton. Was it just being nice? Or was Spencer’s stupid brain getting itself in for more than it could handle? No. No, that wasn’t it. He just had to live up to the standards his mother had thrust upon him. That wa all.

After a few bites of the food, a delicious meal if you asked Patton, and he had been in the more gourmet of restaurants in L.A. His face would turn red once his mother had mentioned the whole "little boy" part. She was so..extra when it wasn't needed.

Patton would simply smile towards the other, sort of subtly as he spoke to him. "You would? Thank you! You basically saved any last shred of hope for this small town that I had....not that it's terrible. It's just I plan to be a big Broadway and maybe even film star after high school. It's just my only solace aside from the friends I left behind," he'd state honestly. Why did it matter to him that Spencer found interest in it? Why was he so excited, he barely knew the boy. He knew his name, and he's been through some shit. Shrugging he'd share eye-contact with his mother for a brief second, getting the look. Not the "you're in trouble" the "don't fuck up what we have going here" look, the one he got several times before his father was arrested. He wasn't in agreement with his parents, as he would look towards her.

A few more minutes would pass before aimless conversation would become amidst the adults, and left Patton somewhat bored."Mrs. Lee, do you mind if Spencer and I go to my house?" he asked, to even his own surprise. His mother laughed amusedly, she didn't necessarily care what Patton did as long as he played his part as the endearing son. He hadn't exactly known why he asked, but they were both seemingly finished with the meal, and his mother seemed like she wanted to speak to Sarah a bit more before leaving. Knowing her son's patience, she would shake her head as a mother would and began to speak. "I'm sorry, he seems to have gotten a bit impatient. I swear he gets that trait from his father, such a wonderful man really." she spoke with a laugh. He'd sink into his seat trying to avoid the look his mother gave him.

Seeing Patton’s reaction when Spencer agreed to help made it seem worth it. He didn’t know why, after all, he was practically a stranger to Spence, but it made something in him so happy. He raised an eyebrow at Patton’s plans. Sometimes he forgot that other people had dreams beyond “get the hell out of this hellhole.” He was considering psychology or social work, something that could help him help other people, especially kids like him. Beside Patton’s plans, they seemed so... tame. Unremarkable.

Patton’s question shocked him out of his thoughts. Spencer’s mom looked like she was about to answer, when Emily spoke and gave Patton a look that said it all. Spencer and his mom shared a brief look, and her smile widened, a bit of mischief in her eye. “If Spencer wants to go, then I see no reason why we should keep them here. They’re young, they should be allowed have a bit of fun! Spencer will keep him on the straight and narrow, and his curfew is ten-thirty anyway,” she said. “It’ll be nice to just have some grown-up time,” she added, presumably to lure the other woman back in. She didn’t need to know that Spence’s curfew was eleven, and was extendable up to midnight as long as he asked nicely and kept in contact throughout the night. As scared as Sarah was for her son, she also knew that the last thing she wanted to do was push him away.

With a grin, Spence slid back his chair, getting to his feet. He wasn’t going to deny the twisting of anxiety in his stomach, but there was excitement too, and he was never one to deny that. He felt so little of it at times.

With them walking to the house, not very far, Patton would begin to hum a song, as he would start to slightly dance as they walked. "Sorry about my mom back there, she seems to get this thought that I'm going to corrupt every innocent youth I meet. She doesn't have faith in me, yet she has faith in that piece of shi-....sorry," he started to go off on the tangent about his father, but quickly stopped himself. As they'd reach the house, Patton would open the door, and majestically offer the way for the other male. "I would say sorry about the boxes, but we're not gonna be down here. I'm gonna show you my room, and we can talk about the dos and don'ts of this new school. I would rather not have to show these fuckers up, by beating their asses," he shrugged before they'd walk up the small staircase and reach a hallway with a few rooms. His mother planned on remodeling, so that was a plus. His room was the size of his closet in L.A, such a weird thing. But he'd get used to it. As they would walk in his room, they'd see the boxes with Patton's stuff piled neatly in the corner.

However, there was a defining feature in Patton's room. It wasn't the musical posters or the band posters. It wasn't even the guitar hanging from his wall. It was the gigantic ass rainbow flag hanging directly above his bed. Plopping down on his bed, he'd pat the bed for Spencer to join him.

"So, what assholes do I need to avoid?"

Watching Patton sing and dance to himself put a smile on Spence’s face that he couldn’t quite erase. Instead he found himself laughing a little, even as Patton opened the door to their house to let him in. Patton seemed so much more graceful as he negotiated his way around them, while Spencer nearly tripped over one or two. The other boy’s comment about having to kick ass just made Spence’s smile widen. He didn’t know what Patton would actually be like in a fight, but he did know that those most likely to cause trouble were easily twice the other boy’s weight. But there was something about that charm that made Spencer smile, for a reason he couldn’t quite identify.

The smile was wiped off his face the moment he spotted the gigantic rainbow flag on Patton’s wall. He’d been wondering, but part of him had been hoping, praying that Patton wouldn’t have to go through what Spence had lived with for his entire life. Spence felt like he’d been plunged into cold water and was starting to inhale it, starting to drown in nothing.

Patton patting the bed beside him drew Spence out of his own head, and he sat down, suddenly realizing how light-headed he was. The scar on his side wasn’t just tingling, it felt like it was burning, and he rubbed it self-consciously. “Um, assholes, right. The football team for the most part, but in particular the quarterback, Don Franks. He, uh... he’s done some bad shit in his time, but his family is stupid rich. Any time he’s come close to being kicked out, the school has suddenly received a generous donation towards whatever department is struggling, and he’s strutted into school the next day. Just avoid anyone who looks like a jock and generally you’ll be fine.” He couldn’t look up, the sight of the rainbow flag made him feel like he was taking in more water, getting closer to drowning. He just stared at his hands for the most part, occasionally glancing up at Patton.

“Coach Rogers isn’t actually too bad. He goes along with the jock thing but I think he actually gives a shit about his students. He looks out for kids with asthma or who are injured or injury prone, and he always makes sure to tell the kids that are struggling that they’re doing good. Don’t fall for it, he’s actually nice. Miss Hayes can be a bit of a bitch if she decides she doesn’t like you.” He stopped abruptly, needing to slow down his thoughts and breathing before he embarrassed himself in front of Patton. If he hadn’t already.

It didn't go unnoticed to Patton that Spencer had looked up to the flag, and somewhat got nervous. Or maybe not nervous, but Patton didn't care. Wasn't his business to press into other people's lives. His was complicated enough, he didn't want others to press into his. He had his guard for a reason, he was still heavily angered by his parents' actions. Listening intently to the other boy, he heard him mention a guy named Don Franks, it sounded familiar. His mother mentioned an old flame's son, and how he was just a charming young man. He shrugged before he would laugh a little bit. He noticed Spencer stopping abruptly, he wasn't foreign to it. It was what he used to do before he got comfortable in the theater process, he'd often start to talk and ramble. But it was nothing to him now. Wanting to ignore it, he'd instead his mouth speak the words he really wished. "You okay?," the question escaping his mouth. Patton quickly shut up, before pressing into further matters instead he'd change the subject.

"So, Spence....that's fine I call you that? I couldn't think of an easy nickname. What exactly is there fun to do around here? Any sort of club or something?" the question coming out quickly. Not wanting to press into the other question he asked. He barely knew the guy, what was the point in asking him about his feelings. Patton assumed, which he did frequently, he had some issue with the flag. He wasn't sure though, because there was this aura and feeling surrounding Spencer, that just radiated kindness.

Patton hadn’t missed Spence’s anxiety either. Somehow that just made him feel worse, like the other boy was going to judge him or push him away as a result. The question asked quickly afterwards didn’t help, like Patton was trying to change the subject and not dwell on it. He took a deep breath as he thought about the question.

“Yeah, Spence is fine,” he said with a small smile. “Honestly, there isn’t a whole lot to do around here if you’re under 21, and even the bars and the one club are weirdly strict on alcohol. There’s house parties every other weekend though, sometimes they’re okay,” he said, shrugging. He didn’t like parties. They were too loud, too overwhelming, too much that could go wrong. He wasn’t supposed to drink on his meds either, which meant he couldn’t escape all of that. But some of the smaller ones, the ones where the parties didn’t spread through the whole house and there was places that were quiet where you could just chat... those were okay.

“Patton, I need to tell you something,” he blurted out without even realizing it. But he needed to warn the other boy, needed to tell him before it was too late and something bad happened as a result. “People don’t... come out here. Everyone’s super conservative. Like my mom wasn’t joking about people thinking she’s the devil incarnate for divorcing the piece of sh- for getting divorced.” He caught himself. He didn’t need to make this personal. “I only know one other person from here who’s gay, and he didn’t dare tell his parents until he was halfway through college and had a decent job. Not everyone is bad, but there are people who, best case, will tell you that you’ll burn in Hell for all eternity. Worst case...” he trailed off. “There are some people here you can trust, who are open-minded and loving and couldn’t give two shits as long as you’re happy. My mom’s one of them, and Patrick’s another. But you have to be careful who you tell. I’ve lived here my whole life and Mom and Patrick are the only people I trust.” He found himself wondering what it was like, to be able to hang a rainbow flag above your bed, to be able to love without fear, without having to second guess everything you did in case somebody found out. It was a strange, unfamiliar thought, but it was a future he craved, that he wanted more than anything else he’d ever dreamed of.

"You serious?" the words came out immediately after Spencer speaking. Were people against gays here? He wasn't unused to it, Los Angeles had it's assholes, but he had only seen videos of people getting beat for being gay. Bigots spraying slurs all over houses of LGBTQ+ individuals, and Patton was disgusted by it. He had been a small supporter in L.A with the LGBT crowd, helping with Pride Events. But he felt so limited now. The words that Spencer spoke crashed around Patton and he felt like it was going to wash over him. But he wasn't as dumb as people would think, he wasn't gonna stand down. A change had to happen. People deserved to be happy.

Confidently, the words escaped his lips "I'm going to change that."

The words seemed to serious to Patton, he wasn't going to let some bible-thumpers push him around, his mother sure as hel wasn't either. She may be a bitch, but she loved to flaunt her money and fight people. He looked at Spencer and tilted his head for a bit. Was Spencer gay? He couldn't be, he shrugged not necessarily caring. But something tugged at his heart, hearing the concern in Spencer's voice. "How do you know they treat gay kids like shit? Aside from the religious reasons, and the one kid you met. Maybe people need an encouragement. To show it's not bad?," the boy questioned. millions of ideas running through his head. He wasn't going to drag Spencer down, but he sure as hell wasn't going to let people tell him who to and not to be. That was for him to decide.

Patton’s response sent another wave of anxiety through Spencer. He made it seem so simple, like one person could change a whole town’s attitudes. His question sparked a little fire in Spence though. He knew that Patton didn’t know about his dad, that there was no way he could, but oh, if only he did. The spark was smothered by the anxiety for the most part, but it was there.

“I might only know one kid, but I’ve heard the stories. Faggot spray-painted over people’s lockers if it’s thought that they even might not be straight. I’ve overheard the conversations in the locker room.” He swallowed hard. “There was one kid, a few years ago. He wasn’t even publicly out. He just told his father, thought he deserved to know. The piece of shit nearly killed him. That’s not an exaggeration, he ended up in hospital and had to get surgery and everything. At my mom and Patrick’s wedding, the priest made some comment about true love and the love only found between a man and a woman. I’m pretty sure he would have gone on, except my mom was shooting daggers, and he didn’t dare continue. I’ve lived here my whole life, Patton. I’ve seen it all first hand.”

The thought of anyone else going through any of that, the memory of his father, was just making him feel like he was dropping lower into cold water, like he was going to suffocate. He tried clearing his throat, coughing a little, doing anything to try and relieve it and still hide it. He wasn’t going to scare Patton off, he couldn’t.

Patton's expression dropped, why did Spencer care so much? He didn't want to focus on that, he just did. His mind chose the most hidden thing, what was Spencer trying to say? That Patton should just give up on his own dreams for some shit backwater town? He wasn't going to do that. He wasn't that type of person. But....his mother. As much as he hated the woman currently, he couldn't let her go through that. Her husband, his father, was an asshole. But...he sacrificed his own freedom so Patton could still have a parent out. He'd roll his eyes at the thought, yeah, no his father just got caught. He wanted to so bad just scream. Why were things like this.

"What the hell did I do to deserve this...."

He spoke, not realizing he spoke aloud his thought. He'd look over to Spencer, a look of irritation. He didn't want to change, but if Spencer showed some genuine concern he guessed it was the newfound friendship. He'd still be a small amount of pissed. "Fine, I can try for my own safety.....and because for some reason you seem way to fucking concerned over this. I'll only agree, however, as long as we're in the confined spaces of me and you, I don't have to hide who I am. It's shitty for people to be like this." he almost caught himself finishing the sentence with Maybe we can both change that. What the fuck?

Spence just raised an eyebrow at Patton's mumbled comment. God knows how many times he'd asked himself that. He was lucky, he supposed, that his mom and step-dad couldn't care less, that they would love him no matter that. But being gay in the hellish town he'd just had the luck to be born in? It seemed like he'd been a dick in one of his former lives and karma was coming back to bite him in the ass.

Patton didn't seem too happy about it, but he at least agreed to it. Spencer breathed a sigh of relief. He could only now hope that Patton meant it and wasn't saying it just to keep Spencer happy. He nodded as Patton demanded he didn't have to hide it around him. "No, that's fair. I'm sorry, I wish you didn't have to keep your true self a secret. But... I don't want you getting hurt. My mom already seems to like you and she's got high standards," he added, maybe a little too quickly, but smirked to cover it.

"So if we're being completely open and honest around each other, I guess I should tell you why I'm "way too fucking concerned" over it," he said. He wasn't totally sure why he was doing it, but he felt like it was fair. Like Patton deserved to know. He took a deep breath and swallowed. "I'm gay too. And trust me, be glad you didn't grow up here. It's... not fun, trying to figure out who you are while everyone tells you it's wrong. You're only the third person I've told." He said with a small smile and a shrug. Strictly speaking, the fourth, but he was counting his father as a monster, not a person.

Patton tilted his head, it seemed to make sense. But for some reason, a flood of relief filled his body, and maybe a tinge of hope? Why? The male knew why, but he wasn't going to acknowledge that. He wasn't keen on that idea. His dark brown hair would fall into his eyes as he'd lie back on the bed and sigh. Why was this so hard, he still had no desire to be there. Thankfully, the school week hadn't started until the next two days. He'd look towards Spencer before laughing out of random. The serious aura of the room had dissipated as the male looked over to Spencer again patting the bed once more.

"So, since we're gonna be super gay besties, you wanna tell me about yourself? I can tell you about me if you want, just serious shit gets me in a mood. Rather change the subject."

He truthfully stated before he'd pat the bed down next to him, his room was a bit of a mess. Stars plastered over his ceiling, as he'd look towards them humming.

The change in Patton's mood was visible and obvious, and it brought a smile to Spencer's face. There was something about Patton, something that made Spencer want the other boy to like him so bad. He'd been so annoyed and Spence had nearly let himself believe that Patton was annoyed at Spence personally. But as he watched the dark curls fall into Patton's face and as he laughed, Spencer knew it wasn't him. He could feel his own posture relaxing as he adjusted his position to sit cross-legged facing Patton. The suggestion of talking about themselves sparked a fresh flame of anxiety in Spence's stomach, but he ignored it. He wasn't going to let it ruin the moment. He had finally found someone he could be himself around.

"What do you want to know? My favourite colour, food, school subject? Or is this going to become a deep meaningful conversation?" He asked. Part of him wanted it to be just the shallow stuff, their favourite things, but he was also aching for the kind of honesty that came with a deep, meaningful conversation. It had been too long since he'd had one of them. And the last one had probably been with his mom. Not that he didn't appreciate that he had that kind of relationship with his mom, but it wasn't the same.
