Ariza's primary arcane ability is to siphon Ache (or life force) from via, spells, touch, and even his presence. His family taught him how to heal others through rituals and herbal remedies; however, his path veered from the rest of his family. As the years grew, his remedies began to backfire. Rather than healing others, he siphoned Ache from whatever he touched and whatever spells he cast. Unless he actively concentrated, his presence would drain the energy from the area around him. Often times, people around him would find themselves tiring out more easily. Additionally, he is haunted by various Oricha, spirits of gods, old warriors, and protectors. His strongest connection is with his great grandfather who strengthens (and helps control) his abilities in exchange for allowing him to interact with the mortal realm through his great grandson. When he siphons Ache, his fingertips glow light blue.

H E I G H TXANDXB U I L D: 6'2" with lean muscle.

Ariza stands at six feet and two inches, making him average within his family but imposing to everyone else. His slouched posture, dark eyes, and prominent cheek bones leave a striking impression in everyone he meets, although he can never tell whether it's positive or negative. His locs are his pride and joy, kept long and free regardless of his teachers' misgivings. The only time he ever ties them down is during formal occasions, wherein he bundles them into a ponytail.

In terms of clothing, he defines his fashion as street wear with an emphasis of function over form. He does not buy into labels nor fast fashion, preferring to thrift "whatever looks good" or buy secondhand if he truly, truly wants something. His closet consists almost entirely of hoodies, jeans, sweatpants, and t-shirts, each with their own story to tell. The biggest constants in his outfits are gloves that he refuses to take off in other company. They keep his powers at bay and provide him enough security to make physical contact.

P E R S O N A L I T Y:
Some people live on a different planet, but Ariza lives on a different plane of existence. Whether it's a lecture or a one on one conversation, his mind often wanders to ridiculous places so his answers to people are often short, nonsensical, or a request for them to repeat their original question. Many have compared his attention span to that of a goldfish, but he considers that to be only half the issue. His focus runs thin and if a subject doesn't spark interest, he has no problem leaving it behind for something more enjoyable, people included. Perhaps it's because he spent most of days in the company of his family (who tolerated him on the basis of blood) or friends of convenience, he doesn't know how to form long lasting connections naturally and it's often on the other person to start conversations or maintain contact.

The few that manage to befriend him will find a gentle, laid back soul. He loves trying new foods, visiting new places, and experiencing different activities be they related to magic or not. It isn't hard to please him and when it comes to humor, he'll laugh at and joke about pretty much anything. He rarely feels anger and typically plays mediator among those he hangs out with. Despite being tight-lipped about his own emotions, he is attuned to the feelings of others and is usually the first to speak up (either privately or publicly) when he feel that something is "off" about a person. He is honest to a fault and whenever he's asked about something personal he will typically say "I don't want to talk about it" rather than lie. He is unafraid of conflict and accepts the consequences of his actions, as hurtful as they may be. He swallows his sadness whole and puts on a strong face so that people will see neither anger nor fear lest they try too hard to pry into his life. The closer he is to somebody, the harder it is for him to control his arcane abilities and he fears that it may one day lead to their death.

Instead, he defers many of his problems to the spirits haunting him. Given that he is one of the only Santeria practitioners in Cascadia, he ends up speaking to his great grandfather the most out of everyone. It's become something of a habit for him to speak in public and though his great grandfather does not always have the right answers, Ariza respects him the most out of all the people in his life.

Ariza's lineage stops somewhere in the Caribbean where slave traders sold his ancestors and begins in the American south where his great grandfather immigrated in the early 1900s. They were a family scattered across different islands and countries with only oral tradition tying them together. The eerie drumbeats and chirp of crickets in the summertime alluded to something deeper in the fringes of New Orleans.

During childhood his days would be spent at school, his nights regaled with tales of nature and his ancestors, and his weekends fishing in the bayou. Every so often (mainly the holidays), his parents would take him to church though he was only ever interested in the food. Rather than the God that Catholics spoke of, his grandmother taught him that God was merely Olodumare under another name. When he began to talk to spirits (including his great grandfather), his grandmother brought him to the coven where the family's remaining Santeria practitioners studied. He was only twelve years old at the time, far too young to be initiated into priesthood but old enough that he could begin learning. It started off with simple tasks such as cleaning and caring for his grandmother (who served as his godparent) but his mentor guided him through practical applications. Santeria was not simply a religion, it was a way of life. His family's primary emphasis was on Ache, specifically, healing one's body, mind, and soul via rituals, tonics, and wards. They were not a well-known family but for the weak and weary they provided salvation.

He was on track to be the youngest Santero in generations. As he grew older however, something changed. His priorities shifted towards his social life, diving into the world of drugs and alcohol despite constant arguments with his parents (who blamed Santeria for his "fall"). He felt shackled by his duties and the family curse loomed over him, a constant reminder that his days were numbered. More spirits flocked to him and the incantations that once healed others began draining them. His fingertips glowed blue and his face hallowed. The whispers from his great grandfather became more intense and he was frozen. Even though his grandmother advocated for his kind heart his family feared him. At seventeen years old, he was at a turning point, caught between his sense of duty and his desire for a life outside of his religion. His mentor was nearing twenty-five and it would soon fall on either him or his cousin to undergo initiation. His answer came with a letter from Cascadia College. They offered him financial aid and given his lack of other prospects, Ariza felt it best to attend a college that could help him control (and potentially turn around) his abilities.

So begins...

xxxit always seems to slip away
xxxi’m taking back what’s mine
xxxwhat is left stays here
xxxto haunt you
Honestly, Hatch was surprised it had taken her housemates a full two weeks to throw a party. She’d been in desperate need of a release, and she’d been around for a week longer than most of them. But then again, she reminded herself, her housemates seemed to have a slightly better relationship with their families than Hatch did. Classes had only been back a week, and that was probably the most stressful thing most of them wanted to escape.

Hatch had left it until the last minute to leave to go home, and she’d come back as soon as possible. And even then, the few weeks she’d been home had been insufferable. Her oldest brother had announced his engagement, which had just resulted in more boring parties with her parents, where she was expected to drink wine and make polite conversation and wear a dress that made her look like every other businessman’s trophy daughter. Her father’s latest attempt at setting her up with some nice businessman’s son had backfired, even if the conversation had lasted a full ten minutes longer than usual. Her parents had spent the time they weren’t gushing about her brother and how wonderful this was for the family making strained conversation with Hatch about college. Her mother had brought her shopping, which had been an ill-fated attempt at converting Hatch to a more “appropriate” style of dressing. Hatch had, at least, gotten some new shirts out of it.

So when her housemates had suggested a party, Hatch had nearly fainted with relief. She’d gotten the word out among her friends and had even helped decorate a bit. They’d told everyone to bring their own drinks, but still had a ready stash of spirits and mixers, just in case, and had plenty of food to go around. They knew nobody was coming for the food, but also knew that it would be appreciated. Especially by whatever dumb freshmen would probably show up on an empty stomach. It always happened.

But It almost seemed like everybody had forgotten the events that had gone down shortly before Christmas. It seemed to just be another one of those events that was hot on everybody’s lips for a few weeks before fading into legend. Of course, a student being found dead on campus seemed to deserve a slightly more prominent place in everyone’s mind. Especially when it was clear they were murdered. The police were still around, asking questions, and there was a much tighter security presence on campus after dark. But if they hadn’t gotten the answers they needed before Christmas, they more than likely weren’t going to get the answers they wanted now, and the event had turned into a source of gossip.

“I heard he was in trouble with a gang,” one of Hatch’s roommates declared from where she lay on Hatch’s bed. Hatch raised an eyebrow, glancing at Lotta. “Drugs, guns, the whole thing.”
“I heard it was a cult.” Francis appeared from nowhere at Hatch’s door.
“A cult, Francie? Really?” Hatch laughed, leaning in to finish applying her lipstick.
“Yeah. Satanists.”
“Pretty sure his death wasn’t ritualistic enough for it to be a cult,” Lottie remarked.
“He pissed them off and they snapped. James says a senior approached him and tried to talk him into going to some service and then when he refused, the guy got really pissed off. He definitely seemed capable of murder.”
“Or, you know, it was just a mugging,” Hatch remarked, raising an eyebrow and turning around to face them and taking a sip from her Jack and Coke. “Sometimes things are just painfully ordinary and boring.”

Ordinary and boring. Two things Hatch was determined to never be. Her dress was another present from her mother. It had been pointedly laid out for her before one of the many parties she’d been forced to attend, and was one of very few outfits that her mother picked out for her that Hatch actually liked. However, Hatch took comfort in the fact that she was pretty sure her mother wouldn’t have liked her shoes or her makeup, and relished that.

Even though the party was in her own apartment, Hatch waited until it sounded like there were plenty of people there before making her appearance. Looking like she’d been waiting for everyone else would just make her look desperate, so she waltzed out of her bedroom and scanned the party with a raised eyebrow. It seemed that everyone else had been as excited for the party as they had been. She made her way over to the kitchen to pour herself another Jack and Coke (heavy on the whiskey, of course), where she positioned herself to continue scanning the room and either find a familiar face or someone who at least looked interesting.

Ariza Jackson | Arcane | #3090C7 | Outfit

Unlike some people, Ariza actually enjoyed being home for the holidays. Seeing old friends, showing his family that he had asserted some control over his powers, and eating food with flavor. While Cascadia's students had that in spades, he couldn't say the same for the cafeteria which was woefully bland. He felt more comfortable among the Santeros given that their focus wasn't solely on a western style of magic. That wasn't to say that Cascadia's methods were exclusionary, but they were certainly biased towards certainly philosophies. It was a radical change from the religion-focused pedagogy of his community, but an effective one for containing his power.

When asked about his first semester, he recounted the lukewarm reception, his friendship with Beau (which of course, earned teasing from the rest of his family), and his trying hard not to be angry Cursed magic mentor who chewed him out more than once for not paying attention in class. The santero-in-training abstained from mentioning the murder that happened not too long before Christmas in fear of his parents chiding him for picking such a dangerous school. They were already skeptical of Cascadia and he didn't need more evidence that transferring home to community college was a better option.

Despite that, coming back to school felt like a hassle. Prior to the first day, his humanities professor assigned him reading and along with that, an essay that he would surely get a C on, B+ if he could differentiate a rough draft from a final. Lectures and theoretical knowledge never clicked with him the same way that lab classes did. Practical application suited his tastes more and anything that wasn't directly relevant to his arcane studies tended to fall by the wayside.

Were he actually an upstanding student he wouldn't even be at this party! He usually didn't attend house parties for hosts he didn't know (he preferred the play movies in the background while you drink and play games type of kickbacks). The only reason he was here was because of an invite from Beau and the promise of free drinks (pending what everybody else brought). He expected the rest of the party-goers to be upper classmen so it came as no surprise when the presumed hosts and a laundry list of other people he hadn't met were already there when he walked through the doors.

Beau, his one of maybe three or four friends was busy talking to Harmony who he vaguely knew, but didn't particularly hit it off with. Their personalities clashed (albeit not antagonistically) so he tended to keep his distance unless Beau or Monet were there to break the ice. In rare cases, he would sink into the background and stay on his phone while his great-grandfather marveled at the strange ways that modern young adults wasted their time. Today it seemed like the man was content to leave him alone.

"Hey...Beau!" He mustered as much volume as he could to call her and wave, which didn't amount to much over the din of students pounding drinks and the latest pop hits.

Ah, he would definitely need something to loosen up. It was a shame that neither Minourie nor Geoff were at the party yet or they could have had a smoke in a corner somewhere. Approaching the kitchen counter, he mixed himself a gin and juice (heavy on the juice) and downed it with vigor before heading over.

"Hey Beau, Hatch,"(did he even have the right to call her that?) "Everyone have a good winter break?"

Hatch smiled as Beau appeared in front of her, having had to negotiate a pack of jocks. “What can I say? Everyone’s desperate to see what it’s like to live like Hatch Cunningham,” she said with a shrug. “And don’t be ridiculous, Beau, I’d miss the distinctive awkwardness you always bring to proceedings,” she said drily, shooting her friend a wry smile. “My holidays were... well, the same as ever. My brother got engaged, so there was a lot of standing around at events that my family likes to call a party and smiling as politely as possible. You know what it’s like. Mother tried to be friendly but also tried to make me dress exactly like her.” She laughed a little, taking a sip from her drink. “Which went about as well as you can imagine.” She nodded politely as Ariza approached and asked about their winter break. “Oh, you know... same as ever,” she said with a shrug.

She spotted a familiar figure making their way into the party and smiled. She’d heard, of course, that Isabella would be coming. Isabella had made it abundantly clear that she intended on showing up, even if Hatch hadn’t specifically invited her. Which, of course, had exactly been Hatch’s plan. “Excuse me for just a moment,” she said to Beau and Ariza, making her way across the room. People seemed to part around her, even as drunk as some already were.

“Hey, Lisa, thanks for coming!” She said cheerily, before turning to Isabella and smirking, raising an eyebrow. “Hello, Isabella. Fancy seeing you here. Wonderful, as ever,” she said. “I’m so glad you could make it. What an... unusual choice of outfit.”

Beau gave a small chuckle as Harmony gave a quick remark almost immediately after, bringing the glass to her lips as she sipped a bit of her shot. Arching her eyebrow up at Hatch as she mentioned Beau's distinct awkwardness that she brought. Almost caused her to spit up the alcohol as she had gone for another sip, "Holy shit, Hatch." she sputtered, wiping the alcohol from her lips with the back of her hand. Beau nodded her head as her friend continued to explain how her Christmas Break went, even though she had an idea of how it went. Their families were relatively similiar in a few ways, so she understood how certain things were. "Psh, trust me...I get that entirely. Mine were no better.." she muttered. Looking down at her own drink for a few seconds before she heard a familiar voice call out from the crowd, as the figure in question walked over to them. Ariza Jackson, one of Beau's best friends that she had actually pissed over the holiday break. "Hey dude, glad to see you finally make it." she said with a short lived smile, as her eyes managed to latch onto someone in the crowd. She only saw the person for a split second, but it was enough to know who it was. The tall, slim figure, long red hair, and overly priced attire. Isabella Vayne. Even the name made her want to vomit.

Quickly looking back at Ariza, the small smile returned as he asked how things had been over the winter break, simply giving a small shrug as Hatch explained how her's went. Beau's eyes dotted from Hatch, back to the crowd as she left to go do something for a moment, "Uh, yeah. Sure...You go, you go do whatever it is that you-ah forget it" her voice trailed off into an incoherent mutter by the end. Way to be smooth, Beauregard, she thought to herself. Rubbing her temple for a moment, she looked back up at Ariza, "Anyway! The break was...as you'd expect. Not even worth going into. As always." she said with a forced chuckle before downing her drink before she began to refill her drink again, "So, what did the glorious life of Mr. Ariza Jackson offer him while he was away from his dear friend?" she said with a small smirk, clinking her cup against Ariza's before taking a small sip again.

It was only a few moments later that she felt someone's hand rest on her shoulder, which caused her to jump a bit before she heard yet another familiar voice speak up behind her. Turning her head to look to her side, a small smile overturned her lips as she saw who it was, Darcy. Another one of her, friends. "Oh shit, Hey Darcy!" she greeted the woman as she gave a short and friendly hug. "I hope you had a good winter break. It's uh, always good to see you." Beau said with a small chuckle, before turning back to place her drink on the counter. "Can I help getting a drink for you? There's, well...Whatever the fuck it is that they have here." she said with another forced chuckle, the nerves were begining to set in full force, taking her own cup back and downing it in one quick go. She'd need as much alcohol as she could drink if she wanted to be able to stay here any longer than she already had been.
