He almost feels like a television character, so two-dimensional about the way he speaks and dresses but shows those rare sparks of life that make others think of him as more odd than boring. He knits his brow when he's thinking. He brushes his nose to deceive others into thinking he's sending someone a message, he intentionally looks into people's eyes when he's lying, he makes sure to think of a funny memory when he's faking a smile (but not too funny), and he learned all of this from watching a few movies. He calls these tactics "social engineering", although he isn't sure if its the right word usage. By carefully controlling his tone his statements (regardless of the content) change dramatically. What might be an insult suddenly becomes a joke and vice versa. He chooses these sorts of things carefully but doesn't want to seem so because under all of that trickery is a conflicting man.
Though he acknowledges that he is the son of Hermes, he isn't entirely comfortable with stealing or rather, he isn't comfortable with how much he likes stealing. His mother taught him ethics (something he deeply regretted) as well as an honor code that he constantly wrestles with whenever he comes to a decision. Is pirating okay because he is promoting the movie? How rich does a person have to be, before you're allowed to steal for them (how does stealing from a rich person more morally right if they are as innocent as a poor person of the same personality?)? Though these thoughts are often enough to stop normal people, it's one of the defacto traits of being a child of Hermes. How can, then, the compulsion to steal be wrong if it's absolutely out of his control? He tries to justify his stealing with the idea that he is a collector of sorts who will eventually pay back his debts once he is rich and successful.
Calling him a thief is one of the few ways to seriously anger him and though he's been told to take the title with pride he is very willing to engage in a fight to defend his character. Granted, his first response is to walk away and cool off, but with enough prodding he will fight just to shut people up. Public opinion matters to him as much as it does to the next person and he doesn't cower under the weight of insults.

Along with his mother's strict moral code, he learned from a young age how to steal and that he could do it well. It started off small: pens, scraps of paper, candy. They usually weren't anything useful, but as he grew older the itch became bigger...and harder to justify. In school, they extended to lunches (if he felt hungry) or cellphones (if he felt like looking for gossip) and stayed that way until he became careless. Of all the "you stupid idiot" slaps he received from his mother, the most prominent had been when he stole his math class's final exam and attempted to pawn the answers for quick cash. His mother caught on after digging through his backpack and demanded that he not only give back the exam but also pay back every penny he earned. He tried justifying the fact that the teacher made the exam brutal and that he wasn't hurting anyone but that only exacerbated his punishment. She made him wear a sign saying "I'm a thief and a cheater" for the entire day.
If it wasn't already implied, his mother wasn't the merciful type. By contrast, his stepfather was never really around to dissuade her (sans the time she nearly killed him for trying to jump off the roof and fly). He only came into the picture once Takeo finished his second year of junior high and had his character more or less set. From the few dates he'd overheard the two come home on, Takeo already concluded that Yu was a very boring man with boring person interests that really did not interest him in any way, shape, or form, but at the very least he was nice. Whenever Takeo asked to leave the house or for money, the man would ask "what for" but oblige nonetheless. He always cared more for his movies than anything else.
The time Takeo spent outside of the house, he used for polishing his powers, both god-related and non. He signed up for theater classes, read mythology books, and even watched that awful Percy Jackson movie with his family. He soaked in all the information he could and committed to becoming a more "useful" and morally aligned individual. His mother was not a huge philosopher by any means but she had quite the library of philosophy books so he poured himself into figuring out how the hell to quell his mother's voice every time that he pickpocketed someone. It butted heads with his kleptomania but as all things remained natural (in his minds) he kept performing mental gymnastics to make the stealing feel less and less wrong.
After finishing high school he received a letter from Hermes, informing him of Camp Athens as well as a pair of wing-tipped shoes that were resized to fit his adult self.
Relationships:
Family
â Kana Kobayashi (48): His mother and perhaps, the scariest woman alive. Unlike others, he buckles under her hardened stare and can't bring himself to lie to her all too much (although she admits that he's gotten much better). She has instilled a great deal with morals within him, with the most prevalent being her hatred of "liars, cheaters, and thieves." She believes that there is no such thing as a harmless crime and unfortunately, you have to choose who you hurt.
â Yu Kobayashi (52): His father who doesn't have much of a story. A Japanese salaryman who drinks once or twice a week after work and takes them on vacation every couple of years to Hawaii. Takeo considers him less of a father and more of a functional product (like a towel rack or chair from IKEA). The only time he comes to Yu for advice is regarding movies as Takeo's father is a huge cinephile (although he doesn't show it).
â Seishiro Kobayashi (10): Takeo's younger stepbrother who additionally functions as a wrecking ball. He has a bigger inclination for destruction than an anarchist and is still cute enough to absolve himself of responsibility...well as long as his stepmom isn't there.
Hermes
Takeo doesn't get what his mother saw in this guy. Was it some sort of bad boy attraction? Did she think she could change him? Or did she know what she was doing and just make a mistake half-way through. Either way, Hermes is a thief. He stole Takeo's chance at a normal life, he stole Takeo's Mac (although he was actually quite thankful as Hermes left money to buy a proper PC), and he stole his mother's virginity (although Takeo doesn't really believe this). The two met through a blunt e-mail and later letters (as Takeo marked all of Hermes's emails as spam). Go figure, that Hermes would actually fly to Japan to confirm Takeo's godliness. Nowadays, they shoot each other a message or two on Skype but Takeo tends to ignore him unless he has questions.
Powers:
â Flying: Using wing-tipped shoes he can zip around, which is fairly useful but he doesn't use it unless she's out for deliveries.
â Forging Hidden Weapons: Again, quite useful yet he doesn't invest much outside of hiding some weapons in his clothing. You never know when a fight breaks out after all.
â Power Theft: His favorite power. Despite originating from theft, he technically doesn't steal the power as it is temporary and not quite as strong as one would think.
â Kletpomania: Not so much a power as an inclination but who is to say that being good at it isn't just a product of being from Hermes?
