However, as years passed humans began to poke and prod among the ruins of ancient Egypt uncovering the mummified remains of pharaohs and sacred tablets and artifacts belonging to those of hundreds of years before. The nature of humans disrupting the natural order of life is uncanny, and disrupting so many souls from their final resting places ultimately comes with a hefty price.
Our story follows a group of young college students on a month long study abroad trip in Egypt. Accompanied by their quirky, and often zanny professor of history the students happen upon an undiscovered tomb. Inside it? A dark and ancient power that has been waiting years to arise. They have gone too far into something that was meant to be untouched and in doing so awoken the ancient Gods of Egypt. Unfortunately, not every God is so forgiving regarding the ignorance of humanity. Each student finds themselves gifted by a sleeping God and given a task unlike any other. To stop the God of Chaos, Set, before he brings an end to us all. Suddenly faced with a destiny that is almost too big to handle the students must decide whether or not to accept their divine rights or abandon all hope as we know it.

Although the Professor had other plans.
When the buses began to fill leading the tourists back to the capital, Hawthorne instead had the group stay behind as he wanted to see one last thing before they headed back. His request was met with some protest - after all they had been trekking nearly all day, not to mention whatever the man had in mind was definitely not on the itinerary. It wasn’t until about a half hour after they had been wandering aimlessly around the desert that it was obvious they were more than a little lost.
”Professor where exactly are we going?” Elena spoke up from the front of the group, adjusting her backpack more comfortably on her shoulders. The heat had begun to take a toll on her, no telling how sunburnt she was going to be in the morning. He was too deeply involved in his map to hear her as he mumbled to himself tracing his fingers over the map leading them onward.
Elena blew a small sigh out of her lips and slowed her pace so she fell in line with Jaiden and Yousof, pushing her sunglasses up the bridge of her nose slightly. “Alright, Hawthorne has officially lost it” She muttered under her breath. “Weren’t the buses back that way? I’d really prefer not to spend the rest of this trip rotting in the desert.”
Others however were a little less vocal with their obvious concern. Augustine had been trailing behind the majority of his peers throughout the day, stumbling several times over rocks and occasionally his own feet. It was almost as if the young man needed a harness tied around his waist so he wouldn’t stray too far from everyone else. Granted, the pyramids fascinated him in his own little way. His parents would’ve spent days camping out here just to get the perfect picture. Auggie still couldn’t help but feel a tad bit underprepared for what this entire trip had to offer. His mother nearly fainted at the thought of her precious son in a foregin country.
They had been led past the Pyramid of Menkaure to the Queen’s Pyramids, a set of three Pyramids that were smaller in comparison to the others each built for a famous Egyptian Queen. Long gone were the signs placed conveniently for the tourists, it was beginning to look like mountains upon mountains of sand dunes awaiting them when the ground suddenly dipped down into a small ravine. Professor Hawthorne skidded to an abrupt stop at the sudden dip in the ground and his eyes lit up like a child on Christmas. ”Fascinating” Hawthorne said under his breath lowering his map as he looked at the ruins.
A gasp escaped Elena's lips as she stopped right behind Hawthorne peering down at the sight before them as she scrambled to grab the map that she had snagged from the tourist station from her backpack. No where did it list the presence of this tomb or a current excavation taking place. To anyone else, this place might not have existed.
At the bottom of the ravine set a massive entrance to some sort of temple that was half buried in the sand. The place looked like it was just a breeze away from toppling over. Threatening statues of pharaohs set in the front staring menacingly down at them, almost as if they were guarding whatever lie inside. The sight made Elena’s stomach twist with an odd mix of fear and curiosity. There was no way that something like this had sat here for this long without being discovered. Unless it had unearthed itself, just for them.
What a ridiculous thought.
Hawthorne turned back to the group his map splayed out in his hands before him a large grin on his face. ”This - This is incredible.” He stammered. ”Students! Today we have the opportunity of a lifetime… this could very well be the first time in thousands of years that a human has set foot in these ruins”. He didn’t really ask much of an opinion as he began carefully moving down the edge of the ravine beckoning for everyone to follow him.
Elena gave a cautious glance to her friends, “We have to go after him don’t we?” then back to Hawthorne. “We have to go after him.” She said more to herself as she began after him, sliding down the slope.
Every fiber of Auggie’s being wanted to speak up, protest what was most likely certain death. What managed to come out of him was something of a squeak-cough and his face flushed terribly. It wasn’t like his judgment stood much of a chance. So he scrambled after the others in fear of somehow being left behind.
Professor Hawthorne reached the base of the ravine just in front of Elena, placing his hands on his hips as he gazed at the towering Pharaoh statues to the dark cave of an entrance. “Professor none of us really think this is a good idea we-.” Her face paled slightly as he slipped off his bag and crouched down, digging through it furiously until he fished out a flashlight. He tapped it on his knee a few times before the faint light flickered on. “You, you can’t be serious.” Elena sputtered out a look of complete shock on her face. Hawthorne just returned her gaze with a small glint in his eye. He stood up brushing sand off of his pants, brandishing the flashlight in his hands. ”I know this might seem a bit insane to some of you but… I can’t let this opportunity pass. We have a real chance to make a discovery here, I mean think about it. Wouldn’t some of you like to have a piece of your name written into history? You all signed the waivers didn’t you…?” The briefest smile flashed across his features. “I’m not forcing any of you to follow me in, in fact, by all means stay out here. I’ll just have a brief look inside…” He trailed off as he gazed back at the door. “Anyone who would like to join me however, I won’t stop you either”.

And it had been one hell of an experience already. Eli was lucky enough that they’d been on a few trips abroad with their family when they were younger, but there had never been anything like this. The days were spent exploring, getting to see the sights and experience something entirely different, and their nights were spent talking, discussing what they’d seen, doing dumb shit, and usually passing out from exhaustion in someone else’s room instead of their own. They loved the group they were with. It felt like home away from home, and it made discovering new things even more exciting.
They’d dressed for the sun with shorts, t-shirts, and button downs, and plenty of SPF. They didn’t tan and they refused to have their trip ruined by sunburn. They also made a point of always carrying extra SPF in case anyone made the mistake of saying they hadn’t put any on. The warm weather and sunshine seemed to be suiting their mood and they found themselves incredibly relaxed.
So when Hawthorne said he wanted them to see one more thing, Eli was, surprisingly, not among those complaining. But after half an hour, when the air was starting to get colder and Hawthorne seemed to be just bringing them around in erratic directions, they were starting to regret not protesting more. And then they found themselves at the edge of a huge ravine… and Hawthorne wanted them to go down into it?
They would have been more than happy to wait up top, but everyone else seemed to just follow Hawthorne down regardless. So they followed, glad that years of gymnastics gave them a good sense of balance as the climb was a little treacherous. It was only as they got down to the entrance of the temple that they really hung back. It seemed like an exceptionally bad idea, and they couldn’t quite believe that Hawthorne was encouraging it. Eli was not intending on going in. It was going to be too small, not to mention whatever the hell was awaiting them within. It was only when it felt like everyone else was going in regardless that they reluctantly followed the rest in, the walls already feeling like they were starting to close in around them.

The first few days were rather, uneventful if Jaiden was being honest. Not much of anything happened except for small travel, and touring some of the surrounding cities. Not that it wasn't interesting or boring, it just wasn't exactly what they had been expecting. It was now the second day and the sun had already started to slowly go down, as well as the majority of the tourists were beginning to head back to the buses and leave for the night. Jaiden stayed amongst the group and waited for what they would be doing. It was only when Silas told them all to follow him and that they weren't exactly done just yet, much to the vocal dismay of the others. While everyone was getting either burned or complaining of the heat, Jaiden had welcomed the sun. They oddly stressed in darker colors and skinny jeans, with plenty of sun screen applied, of course. With sunglasses in hand, they had no reasons for complaining, at least not now. They figured in the morning they would feel the aftermath of the Egyptian sun that shone down on them mercilessly for hours.
Jaiden turned to Elena when she fell back alongside them and Yousof, giving her a soft chuckle as she complained about Hawthorne losing his mind, "I thought it was already well established that he went mad years ago, El? But c'mon, it's not so bad. It could be much worse, could be spending our summer inside a classroom all day." they gave a grin, wrapping their arm around her shoulder for a moment as they pressed onwards behind Hawthorne. It was only when he stopped walking and the trio almost walked into him that they all paid attention. Looking down infront of them was a small ravine.
Jaiden stopped and looked at the others before looking behind Hawthorne and down into the revine itself. A small bit of anxiety began to form in their stomach as they looked around, the entrance of what looked to be some ancient site was barely visible. Looking back up at the others, and then at Hawthorne as he began his decent, and eventually the others followed him. Jaiden gave a soft sigh and followed them all down the ravine, standing to their feet as they finally got a proper look at the remains of what stood before the group. Large, foreboding statues of the past looked down on them like ants that they appeared to be in the moment. Looking around silently, Jaiden's eyes widened as Hawthorne began shifting through his bag, eventually pulling out a flashlight and turning to the group. "You can't be serious-" they started, but were quickly cut off as Hawthorne said they were invited to come along, and it would be foolish to turn down the possibility of being written down in history for a discovery like this. If it was what they were all suspecting.
Thoughts wracked around their mind as Jaiden thought for a moment. If something was to truly be down there, and if they were a part of a possibly large discovery, it could possibly end up with some way of helping their situation back home. Jaiden could feel a slight nagging feeling in the back of their head, something telling them not to. But at the same time, they had no real choice. Jaiden shifted through their own backpack that they had with them, quickly retrieving their own flashlight and turning it on, exposing some of the smaller details of the entrance as they took a few steps forwards towards Hawthorne. "I for one say what's there to lose in a possible discovery? As long as we don't come across any more scorpions or centipedes, I know I'll be fine. So, count me in." Jaiden said with a large smile. In reality, Jaiden was both terrified and excited for what could possibly be ahead, even if what was about to come could be a mistake. What was the harm in snooping around for a little while, right?

Makoa couldn't help his grin as he basked in the heat of the Egypt sun. The trip was turning out better than he imagined! The sights were gorgeous and the locals were very friendly and helpful. Maybe a little too much since Makia had gotten a good tip about a nightclub near their hotel. He may or may not have taken some people there last night. Hawthrone didn't need to know. Honestly, he might've come too. Makoa kept pace with the group staying towards the middle, half listening to Hawthorne and making bad jokes at Michael. "I wonder if someone ever thought about sawing off the top of a pyramid. Nevermind then it would be pointless."
Unlike her troublesome brother, Malia was clinging to Hawthorne, actually trying to learn something from this trip. Malia refused to go out the previous night, despite her brother literally trying to drag her there. She was attempting to do more research about the pyramids they were going to visit the next day. The pyramids of Giza are a marvel of ancient engineering. The fact that it only took around twenty-three years to create the Great Pyramid, using a ramp and a pulley system mesmerized Malia. She had taken so many pictures and had a notebook in her knapsack to take notes and sketches of the great monuments. Malia had nearly run into the Professor when he stopped suddenly.
"Hey Teach! Why are we stopping?" Makoa pushed his way to see what everybody was looking at. He was not expecting a ravine leading to a... he wasn't sure what it was called, but it looked cool. "Epic," he said in almost a whisper. The scary looking statues didn't deter him at all. If anything, he was waiting for something akin to approval from Hawthorne before jumping down.
Then his voice of reason chimed in, sounding an awful lot like Malia. "Don't even think about it. Last thing you need is a broken leg." Explaining that to her parents would be disastrous, and they would baby him like always. Malia, too, was interested in the temple down below. Her curiosity outweighed her sense of self-preservation. It couldn't hurt to look. Makoa rolled his eyes at his twin. A broken bone would be the least of his worries. "Where is your sense of adventure, Mal? Maybe we'll find a mummy, that would be epic!" "Maybe we'll find a mummy." Malia mocked. Makoa stuck his tongue out at her, before shoving her playfully.
While everyone else seemed to be debating on whether to follow Hawthorne down the ravine, Makoa had already jumped down. Years of baseball, surfing, and running from campus police have prepared him for such a moment. "LAST ONE DOWN IS THE HUMAN SACRIFICE!" Makoa called out to those above him. The sight in front of him was like the start to any Indiana Jones movie. Makoa tugged on his shirt's collar. He always felt a kinship to the dashing adventurer. One statue did freak him out though. It kept staring at him, but the right of it's eye seemed to be following him. Yeah, keep staring. Makoa thought, despite his discomfort. Malia watched her brother in mild distaste and slight amusement. He always had to be the brave one. Malia scampered down after him, only nearly falling on her face twice.
Malia gulped as she came face to face with the entrance of the temple. It didn't look as large or ominous from above. The statues of the pharaohs seemed to be looking into her soul, like they were assessing her. Malia felt uneasy, needing reassurance. Glancing at Hawthorne, the glint in his eyes was one Malia had never seen before. "I can’t let this opportunity pass. We have a real chance to make a discovery here, I mean think about it. Wouldn’t some of you like to have a piece of your name written into history?" He wasn't wrong. A discovery of another temple would be monumental. "History favors the bold, right?" Malia said aloud, more to herself. She took out her phone, using it's flashlight. Time to do something amazing.
Makoa trailed behind his sister. His knapsack filled with less than essential things: a hairbrush, hairbands, deodorant, water, and a lot of Egyptian snacks. His phone was dead from all the pictures, not thinking to bring a portable charger with him. He stood with Eli, sticking to the the middle. "What are you going to do with your half of the treasure?"

When he told his family about Egypt he had been met with a mixture of annoyance and elation. His parents were unhappy that he was delaying his graduation. In their words "we left thirty years ago and now you want to go back?" His sister joked that he was returning to the motherland and had him promise to bring back a rock for her. She loved collecting
Eh, I'll grab one on the way back, he shrugged, nearly walking into Elena as she asked Hawthorne where they were headed.
Four years and he still hadn't quite nailed the "gaming while walking" skill. He slipped his phone away (after sending a streak or two) and shook his head at their teacher.
"We could always hail a camel," Yousof suggested, "I've finally upgraded my Arabic from khawaga to five year old."
Of course (he glanced from one end of the desert to another), they were far from civilization. Sand seeped into his boots with each step, only stopping when the group hit a ravine. Even before looking, he pulled out his phone to photograph the partially buried temple. There was no way that anyone could have found this place before, much less a tour group. The professor must have known something. And if he didn't, then perhaps there was another reason they found their way to this place. Either way, curiosity bubbled in Yousof's mind. He fixated on their menacing gaze; there was challenge in their eyes, beckoning him to enter.
Hawthorne must have agreed because the older male turned towards the class to announce his fascination with the ruins before hiking down the ravine. Elena (as usual) was one of the first to follow after with Yousof not too far behind. The opportunity to jump down was dangerous but alluring...so he took it.
”Race you down there.”
Shooting a mischievous grin at Jaiden, he plunged down the ravine because athleticism be damned he wanted to try something new. Plus, with all of Eli's training he'd make it down there right?
As Ron Howard would say, he didn’t .
Yousof managed to catch himself on the slope of the ravine but stumbled the rest of the way down before rolling onto his back.
”Parkour!” he wheezed.
He sat up quickly checking his phone for cracks before shooting an “OK” gesture to the rest of the group. Mostly Eli and Elena though. A little bit Malia and Makoa. Unlike the Hawaiian boy’s graceful landing, the best Yousof could do was a tumble to break his fall, something he learned after countless hours of eating shit and some advice from Eli, natch.
After standing up, Yousof jogged to catch up to everyone else who was listening on Hawthorne’s speech. The mixed reactions were obvious, but Jaiden’s words validated the feelings he already had upon seeing the hidden temple.
”It’s my last year here. There’s no way I’m staying behind,” he declared with a nod.
He turned towards Elena with a cheeky, if not slightly begging smile.
” What do you say?”

Right now, after gods knows how long of trapezing through desert after Professor Hawthorne, the beautiful glittering dunes were playing horrid tricks on her brain. The vast golden ocean was now a hellish landscape that made her feel like there was no end in sight. She was sweating in places that were extremely unladylike. The SPF she worse? The Egyptian sun had somehow managed to penetrate because - well, why not? Nothing was getting better at this point. Colette loved history as much as anyone, but this was too far. She wanted to go back. Most people did.
Colette had managed to fall behind, likely with other students that were similarly growing weary of this adventure. At one point, she stopped realizing that they were still walking. So, it was just unfortunate that, whilst not being attentive to the very obvious dip of the ravine, she slid on down like a clumsy baby with no perception of depth or awareness that some things were not flat and that one must stop before continuing.
She somehow ended up with a mouthful of sand, plopped onto her ass, and ended up with no backpack. "Damnit," she grumbled, her drawl accented with a slight southern tinge. Not so much like Michaels's own, but it gave her a little character. She spit out some sand, wiped herself down, and then stood up to find her backpack.
This trip is horrible. It's putting her in a less than steller mood, and she wants to leave. Colette never wants to see another pyramid in her lifetime, and she certainly doesn't want to dip into some unknonwn ruins. Especially since Chris decides to regale them with facts that were just - not fun. Not fun at all. She really, really liked Chris, but sometimes the guy needed to quell his excitement.

Okay, maybe not that much better.
The only thing that he didn't enjoy was walking. No one wanted to go this far. It was just too much, and it was far too hot. He could feel his skin burning because he wasn't used to getting all of that sun, and he didn't like it. Chris preferred colder places, and that's probably because he pretty much lived in the mountains all of his life.
Yet, he somehow managed to not lag behind the Professor too much. After all, Hawthorne was after something, and maybe it would be interesting. The trek gave Chris plenty of time to delve into thoughts of things that he learned over the course of the trip - none of which he spoke out loud. He was beginning to learn that not very many people were interested in what he had to say, so it was best to keep his mouth shut. Besides, he wasn't overly excited enough to blabber on about anything at this very moment. He was just... tired. In his mind, he was starting to imagine how he'd go through the process of mummifying Hawthorne, and it brought a sort of creepy smile to his face - if only for a brief moment.
He wondered about things that made this walk less horrible to endure. He wondered what kind of things he would put by his classmates' sarcophagus' for their journeys to the Afterlife. Sometimes he looked at the other students in thought. Likely something that they were kind of used to, yet still unnerved by. Of course, he never wished any of them ill - save for Hawthorne right now.
These thoughts, however grim, got him through this nightmarish trek and to the ravine. Naturally, he'd allow others to risk themselves before jumping down himself. That was only logical. Then they were at the site of ruins, of which his classmates made several remarks - none of them helpful or factual in his mind.
Lucky for Malia, he ended up right next to her. He heard her statement, "History favors the bold, right?" Because Chris is Chris, he just had to reply with a counterstatement. Of course, it would be something absolutely dark.
"Actually, in 1922, some of the members of Howard Carter's team died after the discovery of Tutankhamun. It was reported that they heard a strange human cry. Of course, that's impossible - mummified bodies certainly don't make noises. They remove the brain which houses our speech centers and all the nerves required for basic bodily functions." At that point, he turned to Jaiden because she mentioned something about bugs and other creepy critters, "Possibly a fatal mosquito bite or the curse that was placed on the tomb. Out of the 58 people that opened it, 8 of them died since 1922. Herbert only 4 months after opening the tomb."
Colette stared at him with a flat expression while brushing sand out of her long hair. He stared at her back, "That means that, if one believed in old Egyptian curses, a little over half of us will succumb to some odd illness over the next decade or two. Of course, most of this has been proven false. There is no such thing as curses. We should most likely die of exposure to asbestos, which can lead to lung cancer. Asbestos wool was used to protect Pharaohs from deterioration - which they called Salamander's Wool." Yeah, he learned way too much about the process here.

Now behaving on this trip. That was a different story. A task that would've otherwise been easy for the Golden Boy, unless you mixed it with a little bit of Makoa Māhoe. "Dude, come on this one is for my mom" He said shoving his friend playfully out of the frame as he tried to take a picture in front of the pyramids. "She'll have me in the pigs pen all break if I don't get one good photo from this trip". His face flushed a little red at the embarrassment behind the statement although it was probably hard to tell in the sun. Mikey was a momma's boy through and through. Still, the goofball sophomore had worked his way into a soft spot in Michael's heart and the two had become thick as thieves.
While some others complained about the countless hours they had spent walking around, Michael had only just began to break a tiny sweat. He silently thanked the hours Coach Rainer had him running sprints until his legs felt like jello. His phone buzzed slightly in his pocket and he fished it out as they walked, a tiny mortified look on his face as his mother replied to his photo with some sappy message with several emojis that he was sure she had no idea what it meant. Mikey tried to reply with a quick 'love you' but smacked directly into Makoa's shoulders dropping his phone into the sand. "Sorry I—" He crouched down in the sand and began to apologize when his eyes locked on the ruins in front of them, his jaw slacking slightly. "Now that ain't somethin' you see everyday..." Michael said quietly to himself as he stood up shaking the sand from his phone.
The entire thing was impressive, but looked two breaths away from collapsing in on itself. It reminded him of the old barn him and his brothers used to explore when he was younger. Jacob had fallen through the rotting boards one afternoon and broke his leg, their mother made sure they never ventured in there again. He turned to make a wise-crack to Makoa only to see the madman sprint down the dune at full sprint, Malia following begrudgingly behind him. The whole sight elicited a deep chuckle from him. "Wait for me you ass!" He called after him carefully jogging down the slope, carefully avoiding the slip spots until he reached the base.
Hawthorne's suggestions were a little crazy, but he expected nothing less from the man. He gazed once again at the entrance, a weird sensation overcoming him, he didn't know how long he was staring until he blinked hard a few times shaking his head. Chris's words were more than enough to freak him out a little bit. That was one person he felt like he would never be able to truly understand. "I'm just sayin' I've seen the mummy enough times to know where this is going..." He said to no one in particular.
A small voice of frustration behind him made him turn his head to the side his eyes laying on none other than Colette who clearly wasn't as coordinated coming down the dune. Michael spotted her backpack a few feet behind her up the sand and quickly jogged over to it, shaking the sand from the bag before slinging it over his shoulder. Walking back to her from behind just as she was shaking the sand from her shorts. He placed a hand faintly on the small of her back, comfortingly, only for a brief second before stepping around to her front. "Y'alright?" Michael cocked his head to the side a small smile on his face. "You, uh, dropped this back there" He said cheekily, easing the backpack of his shoulder handing it to her.

Being here meant that she was suddenly surrounded by numerous people she disliked and deliberately tried to avoid during class. The thought alone was suffocating. So she had made a point to distance herself from the others, occasionally sliding back in line to make brief conversation with Eli when she felt like it or Hawthorne although he tended to understand her a bit less. At least this way she had no one to handle conversation with when she herself didn't want to. Lia was able to slink back into the shadows whenever she wanted, unobserved by the majority of the group able to exist and learn on her own — exactly how she liked it.
It was only a matter of time though before her carefully crafted plan was thrown of kilter. She did not however, expect it to come from stumbling upon untouched Egyptian ruins. That shocked her. Just the sight of it took her breath away and heightened that insatiable curiosity of hers. Aurelia always thought Hawthorne was a bit looney but for once she agreed with him. Truly an opportunity of a lifetime. To see her name inside the textbooks she mulled over for hours... the offer was enticing.
Descending the ravine with catlike grace she made it to the bottom and instantly began to sketch the outline of the ruins in front of her. While everyone was piddling about Lia strayed closer to the entrance than any of the others until it loomed in front of her like a tidal wave. Her lips parted slightly in shock as she gazed up at the Pharaoh poised above her. "Amazing" The word came out with a undeviating breath of air as she gently outstretched her hand grazing the base of the statue with her fingertips, the residue of aged stone leaving an ashy stain on her hand.
Aurelia finally took a few steps back, the faintest of smiles on her lips. Her gaze slid over to the entrance — a black void beckoning passerby. Some strange sort of aura seemed to be emanating from the entrance, that left a buzz in her bones. Chris's words caught her attention and she turned back to the group smiling in his direction. She had always found his unsettling knowledge rather charming in an odd way. Aurelia took a few more steps until she was back in the vicinity of the others although she was angled more towards Chris and Malia. "I don't think this is a tomb... I think it's a temple." She turned back to the entrance cocking her head to the side before pointing to the statue on the far right, "That is Ramses the second" Lia inclined her head slightly in Hawthorne's direction almost as if she was asking for reassurance. She wasn't surprised when he nodded — she knew she was right. "Tombs held bodies and treasures but these, these were built for worship. They were built as a means for the gods to reside on earth. The Egyptians believed that inside they could communicate with divine beings. Only priests and Pharaohs were allowed inside".
But at least she was on solid ground, now, and she could reassure herself that the worst part of the trip was behind her. Until the trip home, anyway. Nancy tried not to think about it, but it loomed in the distance, a storm cloud on the horizon, or a dark figure lingering at the edge of her periphery. Her inability to live in the moment was disappointing, but she had adapted to her wanton worrying at least a little, and pushed the presence further into the edge of her gaze. It was still there, that dread, but it looked slightly thinner now. Scrawnier. The days leading up to the flight home would feed it, but today, Nancy vowed to starve it best she could.
She was not athletic in the slightest, but the ache in her legs after hours of walking was oddly pleasant for Nancy. Usually 'different' frightened her, but the distance from her parents had provided a strange sort of ease, and, geography aside, she'd never felt further from them than she did right now. For all her physical tiredness, therE was a lightness to her steps, and the curious glimmer hadn't left her eyes since they first began their exploration on foot.
that is, until now, when she gazed down at the cavernous expanse before them, and her intrigue turned to incredulity.
"I can’t let this opportunity pass. We have a real chance to make a discovery here, I mean think about it. Wouldn’t some of you like to have a piece of your name written into history? You all signed the waivers didn’t you…?" A name written into history. Fame wasn't something Nancy had ever aspired towards, but nonetheless, Hawthorne's statement struck her. Her family appeared, uninvited, in her mind. Disappointment and resentment were ingrained into their faces, and they each held their doctorate.
"I’m not forcing any of you to follow me in, in fact, by all means stay out here. I’ll just have a brief look inside… Anyone who would like to join me however, I won’t stop you either” Nancy watched as students began to trickle in after him, following the professor into the darkness. The temple loomed, steadfast and foreboding, and Nancy stared at it, thinking of doctorates.
With a resolute sigh, she followed her classmates.
