The sound of gently flowing water drowns out most other noise, almost hypnotic in a way. The air around the pond smells of lilac and the cedar smoke of torches lit to keep away the mosquitos. The gnarled oak tree nearby looks like a crotchety old man, and solar lamps stuck in the ground give off enough light to see in the dark.
