Lucian Mitchell is not a name most would associate with a professor at Hogwarts. He was discovered busking in an Underground station at 19 and signed, almost on the spot, to the UK’s leading rock and alternative label. So what, exactly, brings a man with two best-selling albums, and who has opened for both The Weird Sisters and Green Day, to Hogwarts? Only two people in the entire school know the truth, and they are Luc himself and Professor McGonagall. And while he intends on keeping it that way, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy the intrigue and mystery that surrounds him. He feeds into it shamelessly, changing his answer every time he’s asked or just changing the topic whenever it comes up.
Even if he’s more used to big stages and crowds screaming his name, Lucian enjoys teaching more than he ever imagined. Music was his escape and eventually his savior, and he relishes being able to pass on that experience. He’s a surprisingly patient teacher, always encouraging and always praising students when they make even the slightest improvement, without ever being patronizing. His class is an escape from a harsh world. When he can tell his class is stressed, he’s likely to either spend a class telling them stories about his own time in the industry, or doing something easy that will just take their mind off of things.
He’s been through the ringer, even if he’d never show it, so he has endless time for students who might also be struggling. He doesn’t have an office, and instead is always found in his classroom, either playing music himself or helping students who might need an extra helping hand. The classroom is always open, and he’s told his students they’re always welcome, whether they want to practice, they just need a distraction, or they need somewhere safe to hide.
But Luc is far, far from perfect. He’s self destructive with addictive tendencies. The job was actually an agreement with his manager and Professor McGonagall. A two year contract with the intention of getting him back on his feet and helping him ditch his bad habits. He was too proud and in too deep to recognize what a bad place he was in, and it was only when he landed himself in hospital that he realised he needed the help and the support he was being offered. And he’s cleaned up his act for the most part. But the only stable years of his life were when he was at Hogwarts, and two years of homelessness after graduation left him with a multitude of things he needs to escape. He’s kicked most of his vices, but a few have lingered. He keeps them in check, because if McGonagall finds out, it’s his job and possibly his career gone. He’s due to finish at Hogwarts this year and return to his old life, but he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t considered staying more than once.
