Prisca Hart is an American girl with a small, mousy build. Her posture is terrible, her back is nearly always slumped, and the girl has much difficulty in looking others in the eye, especially when being spoken to. The girl is timid like a cat and this is obvious in her avoidant body language and the way she always leans away from others, or dodges their gaze. Otherwise, she is quite forgettable, her hair is nothing special, just cut short with a morose black color that only makes her appear even more meek. On a normal glance her eyes appear to be a pale blue but looking right at them would reveal the true stone grey hue of her irises.

In terms of curves, Prisca doesn't have much, her hips are narrow and her waist even more so. Her chest might be her only redeeming value, erring on the smaller side of average, but not horribly flat either. Upon a cursory glance it's common to think of her as cute, quiet, and hard to talk to, not having an approachable aura at all, unlike some other girls. Even her clothing doesn't help, preferring to robe herself in mostly black with bits of white to highlight the outfit, simple above-the-knee skirts and blouses.

"The end of days has come, as foretold by the Book of Revelations!"

That was the mantra everyone in America was lambasted with ever since the light bearers were discovered. The Catholics used light bearers in America as proof of holy powers, turning even those that refused to believe. Resources were dwindling, and the Hart family, distantly related to the main branch of the Ray family, was one of those that were against the use of light bearers in war. As light bearers were forcibly discovered and then shipped off for experimentation and training, even young children, more and more people began to try to rebel. But those in power, they saw the merit of these powers, using abilities not even guns could keep up with. This kind of advantage, why not try to press it? Japan wasn't the only one dealing with tyranny, America's Shoku was a certain man known as Roger Cross, and he held control tightly, abolishing elections under threat of the light bearers under his control.

War was most definitely brewing on the horizon. And so the higher ups decided to instill martial law to keep it's civilians under control as a response to insurgent activity in which rebels tried to attack light bearing facilities. It was kind of world where twin sisters Prisca and Essie grew up in, a harsh, frightening, and dangerous world.

First was the household issues. Essie, she was always a stunningly beautiful over achiever, charming and friendly, there was no one who didn't love her. Her shadow was Prisca, a shy quiet meek girl that while was liked, was clearly nowhere near as confident as the radiant Essie. The two girls were incredibly close throughout their lives, pledging each other as the other's most important, and with justified reason, of course. Their parents often fought - Harley Ray wanted to move to Japan and take in the newly orphaned Damian, to fulfill their duty as members of Sanctum, but Jared was always against the idea of introducing their children to the shadow war between Prometheus and Sanctum. With all the fighting, Prisca and Essie had no choice but to cling to one another for solace in their troubled younger days.

"Our sisterly love will last as long as this plastic rose lives!"

When the girls hit high school, their homeroom teacher, Patricia Burns, was impressed by their natural abilities and offered them invitations to the library school club. Needless to say, this club had nothing to do with libraries and everything to do with the spread of newly banned prohibited information, trying to teach and promote free speech and the idea of a world without war. Both girls were happy to learn and exchange these banned books with the other members of the Library Club, they felt as if this was their hope in a dangerous world where one wrong word would send black vans to your house to take you away, never to be seen again. Naturally, Essie befriended one of the more well read boys in the club, Callum Riggs, smart, clever, and darkly humorous, Prisca had a bad idea about him from the start. Yet one could say it was true love at first sight for Callum and Essie.

Life at home escalated of course with the finding that father returned home one night smelling like another woman's perfume. Harley Ray, who could no longer deal with all the troubles, decided that he was a bad influence on the house and reported him for sympathizing with the rebels. Jared Hart was taken away, never to be seen by his daughters again. A clever way to make someone disappear. So when the delinquent Callum kept trying to get Essie involved in actual vigilantism, to join the Freedom Fighters even if either sister was a light bearer, Prisca was always worried. Essie would always go to the fights, to help free the captive light bearers, and Prisca always feared that eventually, Essie would be caught, and worse, killed. And no matter how many times the sisters argued, Essie had already fallen in love with Callum, it was too late to convince her to stay away. Learning from her mother's path, Prisca decided to make her own decision, and became the snitch, ratting him out to the officials.

Needless to say, things got worse from here. Under torture, Callum revealed all about the Freedom Fighters trying to retake America and make it a democracy again, as well as the Library Club at the high school. A list of names was made, and then black vans came to take everyone away. Parents were shot trying to protect their children, a certain Hime used her influence to break Callum out and have him escape to Europe safely, but no one else managed to get away. Everyone involved was gathered in a room, and one by one they were suffocated with bags over their heads. Essie looked to Prisca before her bag was delivered, and one word was mouthed. Traitor. And naturally, Prisca was spared at the very end, allowed to live because she served her patriotic duty well. Her reward was to be made an experiment, to become an artificial light bearer to continue serving her country.

Prisca became a Martyr then, the first successful American-made light bearer. And with her new ability, she herself was turned into a child soldier, to fight for the country that stole everything away. Worst of all, she wasn't even allowed to die, the scientists all made sure that she never had the chance to end it all. This wasn't a reward at all, but a punishment, for snitching out everyone. Oddly enough, this act cemented America as a major power to stand against the New Japan's might after Emperor Ira Shoku defeated the Freedom Fighters and the HIVE. The two became the centerpieces of the war, and entire cities were turned into ruin as light bearers clashed with light bearers. In the end, the Yui of prophecy did something, breaking out of Shoku's control and in that final battle, she rained death down into the entire world, reducing everything to nothingness.

As for Prisca? Well, she found a certain girl during the final battle, going as Nemesis, one of the strongest under Shoku's power.. Prisca didn't stand a chance, she was going to join the dead very soon, keeping only a childhood keepsake, a reminder of her dead sister, the plastic rose. She was terrified yet also eager for a chance to apologize, and maybe she would have gotten it too, at least, if it wasn't for a fragment of the Goddess finding her and binding her soul to the rose in preparation for a new conflict...

The final battle of the Third World War. All the forces of the United American Front was waging war at the mighty Japanese Imperial Army. The two most powerful men in the world who were orchestrating this war, well, they weren't even present, they were both safely at home, watching as soldiers died for them, for no reason at all, for resources, money, power, and for nothing most importantly. Ira Shoku and Roger Cross, said to be this generation's version of Kennedy and Johnson -except with the whole world at stake -, were directing the conflict while the mindless slaves fought on. One of the slaves, Prisca, the first artificial lightbearer and the one that 'gave birth' so to speak, to many others throughout the war, standing above the battlefield on a hovering platform, watching. 'You're strong, so only fight the strong enemies that our others can't handle." Her higher ups said.

Prisca didn't mind that order as she traced a finger on the rat's tail right on the ridge of her spine. It tingled and she frowned unhappily. That mark was a curse, it was a brand. This girl is a rat, she's nothing but a traitor, why else would she have such an unsightly mark? Because of a fit of jealousy, she ratted out the entire Freedom Fighter movement within America, if it wasn't for her they could have killed off President Cross and have ended this war already! But instead, everyone she ever cared about was dead, and her hands were continuously stained with blood over and over again. Even with her plasma gun and her prediction, it wasn't like Prisca was going to be much of a match for the stars of Shoku's army. The girl of prophecy, Yui, the embodiment of darkness, and then Nemesis, her most loyal bodyguard, a brutal wielder of air.

"Well, Essie, I guess it's time, isn't it?" Prisca whispered to the nothing around her, aiming her hover platform right for the girl of darkness herself, Yui. Prisca was always the strongest of the artificial light bearers, so she knew her best bet for death would be to fight this wild girl tearing apart her enemies one by one. "Captain, I'm going in." Prisca reported into her earpiece and flew right at Yui, blinking her eyes at Yui to activate her ability. With this she could predict Yui's next three moves and as such, act accordingly. Yui was going to shoot a ball of blood that way, so Prisca dodged to the left. Then a blood sword would be slashed, Prisca would swerve around it. Lastly, Yui would create a wave of blood from the dead to strike at her. Prisca's best chance was to aim her plasma gun right where Yui's head was going to be the moment before she set up the blood wave.

It would have worked if not for a sudden feral roar beside her. A gust of wind knocked Prisca right off her platform but she hopped onto the condensed cloud, predicting perfectly where it was going to be. "Master Yui won't be hurt by anyone, Nemi won't allow it!" Nemesis growled and Prisca blinked, her brain going into overdrive again. She could see the possibilities unfolding in front of her. First she would jump to dodge the blast of air! And then the next move would be to shoot at her before Nemesis finished
charging up more wind. And lastly she would shoot at Yui, forcing Nemi to take the hit!

The problem with her ability was obvious, of course. She can only predict one enemy at a time, after all! And so as Prisca focused on Yui to aim the shot after the first two moves, Nemi struck right for her before Prisca could even react, and then she felt a sudden weightlessness as a large chunk of her torso disappeared from the air explosion. It was short, it was sudden, and it was entirely as expected. "I've never... been as good as you, Essie." Prisca whispered, taking out the plastic rose from her pocket, her only keepsake from her previous life. Someone was screaming in her ear, it was the Captain, but Prisca didn't care anymore, so she shut off the intercom. Nemi and Yui both had lost interest then, moving on to continue the fight.

"You regret everything, don't you? A strange, almost teasing voice from... somewhere. Prisca was most definitely dying, wasn't she? So what was happening, what was this glowing white figure? She couldn't even piece together any of it features, let alone guess at what kind of face it had. It's voice sounded familiar but also impossible distant all at once. "I will give you a chance to redeem yourself and make up for your crimes." Prisca would have laughed if her life wasn't fading out before her eyes. 'The Immortal Girl needs to be saved. Slumber for now, and when the time is right, Martyr, you will know what to do."

Prisca Hart was dead, but the fight was far from over. Nemesis was hurt bad from the way the plasma scorched her body, Nemi was hardly moving. Maybe a tiny bit of the former child within the Immortal Girl awakened because right then and there, it was as if she snapped, no longer just fighting against Cross's armies, but also against Shoku's. Her grieving rain of blood and death would destroy civilization as anyone knew it, and would bring about what would forever be remembered as the Calamity.

....

A tiny, flitting voice after an eternity of slumber. "The Caster's Ritual is about to begin, with these objects we've gathered over the years, the time is now."

It was said, that after the Great Calamity all Light Bearers had gone extinct. There was one sole survivor on that battle field and that was the little girl called Yui. In destroying humanity, she had also destroyed a piece of herself and allowed the darkness to flow free from her body, restoring the light inside of her soul. Yui disappeared that day along with the rest of the light bearers, however, she, unlike the others, was not allowed the mercy of death. Instead Yui fled to the one place she knew could shelter her, a place that had not been destroyed by the Great Calamity. It was a small island off the coast of Japan, one where no one would think to look. There she lived in relative peace, a smart home that was built to last thanks to VorTech. Yui lived out her days in isolation, believing it to be her punishment for causing the dismantle of earth.

It was on one of these days that Yui took a walk out into the dense jungle that covered one part of the island. She put on her rain boots, yellow with little ducks, and headed out to the forest where ten graves marked only by large stones laid in a small, up kept patch of grass. There were no bodies, but Yui had painstakingly etched the names of each of her friends and family into the rocks using her acidic blood. Every week she went to burn incense and visit the people who had been closest to her. Her stomach growled, food had run out weeks ago and the water was too toxic to drink. Still, Yui's body persisted to live despite these conditions, proving just how inhuman she was. "Mizuki," Yui prayed, knowing that she was out there, listening. "If you can perform miracles, please, send me food."

What had arrived was not what Yui had prayed for. She returned to her lonely house, where her stuffed animals sat at the table, "I'm home!" She called to them, pulling off her rain boots and crossing the threshold into the kitchen. "Welcome back," a voice returned. Yui screamed, backing up into the wall. Sitting at the table were several humans, most of which wore protective masks as though the house was filled with poisonous gas. "It seems as though the rumors were true, the mother of Light Bearers still lives."

"Wh-who are you?"

"How rude of me, I'm L." L? "No need to introduce yourself, we know who you are Yui." Yui's stomach grumbled unhappily, she didn't have the energy to fight. "Don't worry, we won't hurt you if you come quietly."

"N-never!" She bolted, running towards the staircase. They were waiting for her at the top, Yui turned to go back down, but they had already surrounded her. She leaped over the banister and ran towards the door. L was waiting for her, he shut it and pulled a mask over his face. Yui turned in circles, gas was filling the room. Her head began to spin, she sunk to her knees, a hand suddenly on her back. "Don't worry, no one will know you still exist." L said, securing her wrists behind her.

"This will be our little secret."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Miiko sat up in bed, the mark on her hand burning. Had the moment to become a light bearer arrived at last? Disappointingly, no, it was only the usual throbbing. "Morning Stella," Miiko said to the framed picture beside her bed. She, unlike her Mother and Father, had hope that her big sister was still alive. Sure, she had been shot in the spine, but a light bearer could take more than that! Right? The stories of old told of fantastical heroes that would take down armies. One little bullet wasn't going to bring down the strongest light bearer in existence and in Miiko's opinion, that was Stella. The naive, childish hope clung to the short brat despite what everyone else had already told her. Give up on Stella, she's dead, they all said.
Miiko reached across her desk to pull on her scarf, mornings in Yavin could be brutal, it was one of the few places that saw snow during the brutal winters. Still in the fall stages, Miiko didn't want to be caught without the precious knit scarf Stella had made her when Miiko had gone bald. "Morning Mommy, morning Daddy." She kissed each of their cheeks upon entering the small kitchenette in their two bedroom apartment, they had moved to a new base of operations since Stella had left them, Miiko was worried that if her big sister came back she was going to have a hard time finding them. She had pointed this out to her parents who had only nodded sadly and sent Miiko off to scavenge while they spoke with the other adults. "No morning for me?" Gavin asked, opening up the front door.
"Gavin!" Miiko bolted towards the man who had become a staple in her life. He was her big brother, her protector, the one who watched over Miiko while the others went to boring meetings and spoiled her when her parents couldn't. "I brought you these, traded an old watch for them," he held out a box of sour candy's that made Miiko's eyes twinkle like stars. "Thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Miiko squealed. "Miiko, no candy before breakfast," her Mommy scolded lightly. "But I waaant it!" Miiko whined, placing the box on the counter. Her Mom was flipping eggs in their pan. Miiko was dutifully setting the table, hoping that she'd be able to sneak in one candy before rations. "Gavin, guess what today is?" Miiko asked eagerly, setting herself down upon one of the rickety old stools.
"Hmm, is it... Yavin Day?" Yavin Day was celebrated on the last night of November, almost like an American Thanksgiving only with no turkey. Meat wasn't readily available, especially not to the class whom they were hiding with. The normal rations were doubled, however, and sometimes they would even receive something like milk or butter. Egg substitutes were popular among their people, made of ingredients that Miiko didn't want to think about. She held out her plate to receive her portion, digging in quickly. "Nope! It's Stella's birthday!" The entire room seemed to freeze as Miiko dug into her egg. "I'm gonna go find her a present!"
"Mimi, why don't you stay in and help us organize the new plasma containers?" Miiko shook her head, "ew, no. Why would I help with that?" Gavin laughed, "the spoiled kitten princess," he ruffled her hair. "Don't encourage her," her Mom grumbled. "I've gotta go, it's supposed to snow today!" Miiko waved, heading out the door in search of adventure.
Knowledge hidden to the Miya family and their compatriots for a long time now was the existence of Casters and Spirits. Spirits are the souls of important historical figures from a hundred years ago, back when civilizations and countries still existed. Light bearers no longer exist, but the spirits are all light bearers, and they all exhibit power beyond what living humans can in terms of combat prowess. Of course, Spirits maintain their memories, personality, and most importantly of all, their powers - but they're also given new techniques as spirits. They can each summon a weapon using energy from their soul, one that represents themselves. And of course, the last tidbit that is vital to know, is that the spirit is bound to the item that represents them, and any Caster that wields the item can control the spirit utterly.
Ten items were gathered. Each one needed a certain wavelength in order to activate, and each also has a special encryption written upon it, a hint as to the identity of the spirit housed within. So far only two were awakened and released thus far - the Rebel and the Singer, the former was famous for leading guerrilla wars against the United America Front, and the latter was known far and wide for her songs inspiring Japan to unite and go to war, leading to many young impressionable people agreeing to be experimented on in order to become light bearers themselves. The Rebel's lucky bullet was given to a certain man named Gavin, and the Singer belonged to someone else entirely. Both Casters were fighters for the front line of the Resistance, of course.
There were still eight other items hidden throughout the two rebel cities of Ondern and Yavin, each of them carefully enclosed that only a curious adventurer would bother to find them. The Scientist remained hidden, as did The Warrior, The Seductress, and all the others. But the one most important to this story was The Martyr, a girl who sold out everyone she ever knew for a petty little reason, ruining countless lives in the process. This plastic rose was hidden inside an old dilapidated office building, surrounded by a river of water that ran through the city of Yavin, and Jace had already done the ceremony to activate the dormant spirit.
So now whoever was able to sync with the black rose upon touching it, they would be able to access the spirit within and use her for whatever they wished. The room containing the item was always warped in a certain way to reflect the psyche of the spirit inside. This room was originally just a lobby for an office building, but because of the black rose and the sleeping, it became a much more twisted area, dark, foggy, with little bits of fool's gold littering the floor, almost looking like a hill of gold in the middle, where a cross lay, tall and bent, crooked. Sticking out of the gold pile in front of the cross was a black plastic rose, both beautiful and everlasting. If you were close enough, you could hear a voice echoing out - but only if you were the one fated to wield it.
"Please stop looking at me, please don't blame me, I didn't mean it, I just want to take it back, to take it all back, please..."
"Morning Miiko!" Coco, the keeper of the boats said as Miiko went down to the water's edge to greet him. As always, the water sloshed dangerously against the side of the rocks, making Miiko's head spin and stomach hurt. "Taking out a boat today?" Coco inquired, gesturing to the few boats that were docked against the makeshift port. "Yeah, I'll take one I guess." It would be much easier to get to her destination by boat than by land. "That'll be twenty," Coco said and Miiko looked up at him with her big blue eyes. "Twenty? B-but I'm the Rebellion Leaders daughter!" Coco hesitated. "Five and I won't tell anyone," Miiko reached into the little backpack she carried with her, handing Coco five nuts. "Great doing business with you, enjoy!" Miiko jumped into the boat, reached for the paddle, and set sail into the tunnel that would take her out of the port and around the island.
The small pink haired girl began her journey by drifting through the bank, looking up at the cloudless purple sky. She shivered, the temperature was dropping quickly, soon the sky would become gray. If the water around the island froze, it would mean that there would be delays in Yavin's message system. "Finding a present, let's see, what would Stella want?" Miiko looked at the list she had gathered on the stone paper they used. Not only was this paper waterproof, but you could erase it after each use so that anyone who wasn't a rebel wouldn't be able to read it. "Roses? She liked roses a lot," roses were a red flower of lore that no longer grew around Yavin. It was too cold for flowers and Miiko didn't have enough nuts for them.
Despite this, she headed on her way to the scrap yard, a place where Miiko and Stella would often go scavenging for parts that could be used to help the rebellion. It was a treasure trove of washed up parts, pieces of humanity, shattered photo frames, and toys. If you looked hard enough, you could find just about anything and that, of course, was Miiko's goal. The pinkette turned on her flashlight, she was heading through that building now, the one closest to where she had fallen into the water. Miiko held the flashlight between her legs, comforted by the small line of light. She had reached the other side when she noticed it, something shimmering at the top of the stairwell. Miiko stopped rowing and in an abrupt manner, rose to her feet. "Hello!" She called into the darkness, her voice bouncing back at her in harsh waves resembling water in a storm.
There it was again! In the corner of her eye, Miiko believed she had seen something. By now the female was rowing herself towards the jagged line of rocks where a half sunken staircase went upwards to the second floor. Miiko tied her boat here and stripped off of her shoes and socks. Slowly she began to climb, making her way onto the stairs that would take her towards the shimmering pile of something. At first glance, Miiko believed it to be gold. She gasped and ran towards the pile with her flashlight, the old office building filled to the brim. Unease struck her at once, there was something terribly off here. If this building was full of gold, wouldn't her parents have spoken of it before? "Fools gold," in other words, rocks painted with glittering luster.
Still, if someone had set out such a trap it must mean that there was something of value inside. Miiko was not going to give up! She had not come all this way just for rocks painted as though they were treasure. Trekking on, Miiko reached a strange space where no light reflected off of the walls. She checked to ensure that her flashlight was working and swallowed, wondering how such a place could exist. "Hello!" Miiko called again, uncertain if she should go into a space where no light was allowed.
For spirits that were awakened from their slumber by the spells of the Miya family line, their waking moments weren't exactly the best sort of way to live - if you could call it living, per say. Without a Caster to reign them in, the Spirits tend to warp the area around them into a sort of purgatory, where their regrets and miseries repeat over and over again until their destined Caster finds them and takes the Summoner - the object to which the spirits are bound - and makes it their own. For some, it's like hell, reliving their worst moments ad nauseum, but for others, it might even be nice to explore their pasts. Of course, for the Martyr, it wasn't at all a fun experience. Hopefully soon her Caster would take the rose and bring her out of this reverie.
Hardly anything made sense anymore. Prisca could faintly remember dying, so why was she here, what was happening? Her eyes were haunted as she wandered the building, the dark foggy gloom of a building. A voice was wheedling in her mind, familiar in a painful way, a stabbing sort of feeling every time that voice made a sound. "Daddy's coming home late." Essie said worriedly, twirling one of her twintails - well, she had been back then and Prisca didn't appreciate the deja vu one bit. "Mama's already asleep too, Prissy... what's going on?" A vague shape in the fog, almost like Daddy himself, emerged in the ephemeral mist as Prisca floated through the halls, not noticing the intruder at all, the pink haired princess who was exploring it in her own way.
Ghosts of the past continued to whiz on by, but for Prisca, there was only one ghost that she could make out. "That's not Mama's perfume." The spirit mumbled to herself, shivering as she recalled the repercussions of this event. "Essie, we have to tell Mama." The fog that vaguely resembled her cheating Daddy disappeared then and the smoke reshaped itself for a new scene to appear. "Where's Daddy, where did the black van take him?" Essie was asking worriedly the morning after Daddy was taken away. Mama smiled and whistled to herself. "What Daddy, we never had one, it was only ever me." Daddy had disappeared, he became an unperson, he no longer existed. Reporting to the authorities was the perfect method to turn people into unpersons.
Oh, how foolish Prisca was. She decided to sit behind the cross that in her mind looked like a tree and Prisca began to cry little muffled sobs out, the waves of misery intensifying with each sob. On the opposite side of the cross was the rose, almost glowing, turning brighter the closer the Caster got. On the cross, words were inscribed, and they lit up thanks to the Caster's innate magic.
A spirit from the past resides in the Summoner before you. If you wish to claim the Martyr as yours, touch the rose and see if you are the one destined to wield her power.
Miiko was not intimidated by the fact that there were voices coming from within. Miiko was not scared by the fact that she could hear someone crying. Miiko was, however, terrified by the lack of light coming from the room. She tip toed inside, calling every few feet in order to allow others to know that she was here. "Hello! I can hear you! Can you hear me?" The sobs grew louder as Miiko moved forward, clutching her flashlight as though it were a sword to save her from the calamity that could befall her should she run into trouble. "I-I'm coming forward! I can help you!" Miiko dropped her bag in front of her in order to find the miniature first aid kit that she kept in her pack in case of an emergency. Did this constitute an emergency? Absolutely. Without realizing it, Miiko stepped through the haze of illusion, she was so busy fumbling with her bag that she had not realized what she had entered.
When Miiko next looked up she was startled by the change in environment. Gold littered the ground, but kneeling in front of it was a girl not much older than Miiko herself. "Hey!" Miiko put her hands on her hips, "Hey! I've been talking to you!" She waved her hand in front of the girl's face, but the child did not move. Miiko grunted, "That's rude you know! You should respond when someone-" of course, being the clumsy git that she was, Miiko tripped over her a gold rock and went right through the girl. Now something was definitely strange. Miiko screamed, scrambling to her feet. The illusion had encased the space and with the dizziness and disorientation, Miiko no longer knew which direction she had come from. "A gh-ghost?!"
"Let me out!" Miiko panicked, clutching her shirt. She backed up towards the center of the room, attempting to find the entryway she had entered through. "Please, let me out. I'm scared," her voice quaked. "Let me go!" Miiko's arms wheeled, she dropped her bag and fell backwards, her hands touching something crisp but soft. Confused, Miiko grasped it between her thumb and index finger, bringing it onto her lap. "A rose?" Stella's favorite... "It's a rose, but, what's it doing here?" Miiko dusted herself off, about to stand up when her hand began to burn. The pain crawled through her fingers and settled onto her palm, making her skin feel as though someone had set it alight. The light bearing mark that had been blank since conception was slowly filling in, light filling the space to flood in through her fingers.
"What's happening?! What are you doing to me?!" Miiko turned towards the ghost, heart hammering in her chest. Her flashlight dropped, the room illuminating with light that come through a large hole in the ceiling. "Stop it!" Miiko needed to stop the pain, she sat forward on her knees and fumbled through her bag for a knife. "Cut it off," she murmured, slightly crazed.
The moment the intruder touched the rose, the Summoner, everything seemed to change. The fog grew thicker, light was flooding in, the soul shard that was once a part of the Goddess was activated, imprinting the rose with the light signature coming off of the pink haired intruder. The illusion of that night faded away and Prisca found herself somewhere else entirely, even though this one was happening entirely inside of her mind. A girl she somehow didn't recognize and yet knew completely was here, was standing before her. The girl was made entirely of light, and yet she looked incomplete, like a fragment. The Goddess. "The time has come. You might not have enjoyed being here with me, but I was glad to get to know you over these hundred years." The voice was light, friendly, but meaningful all the same.
"Wh-what's happening?" Prisca asked cautiously, nervously, she was afraid, this didn't make sense to her at all. "Aren't I dead? Why am I here? Where's Essie?" The last thing she remembered was being killed and then - and then waking up just now. But she had a feeling that she was in this girl's care for a long, long time now. They were in some sort of hall - almost like a large throne room of sorts, with this girl as the queen. "I'm giving you a chance, Prisca, to make up for your mistake. If you do your job well, you will learn to forgive yourself, and you can finally move on." Move on... was it possible? On her hands, there was the blood of so many people, even her own precious sister was taken by her actions. "I can't, I won't forgive myself, not after what I did."
The Goddess had no face but she could smile all the same. "You should atone, and when you're done, there's someone waiting for you, to meet you again." A wealth of information was sent to her then and there, about spirits and casters and Prisca knew that just like before, when she was turned into a light bearer, she wasn't going to have a choice here either. It was too late now, and Prisca was going to be bound to this girl, the intruder, who was most definitely an important figure of the current day and age. "And one last thing. Please, with your Caster, please save the Immortal Girl for me."
The light and the smoke was fading and Prisca was here, given a physical form thanks to the soul shard of the Goddess. Almost immediately, the mourning girl knew what she had to do, even if it was embarrassing. She closed her eyes and went down on one knee, a hand over her heart, energy swirling around her. "You are now my Caster, and I am your Spirit, to serve and fight f-for you." Oh, she stuttered, how embarrassing... what a horrid first impression. "I am the Martyr... and u-um.." Oh great, and now she was blushing, this was just so cheesy! "I-I hope for a good partnership..." She hated this, it was probably weird, this girl was no doubt already just staring at her and thinking her weird, wasn't she?
The knife dropped from her grasp, Miiko gasped as the pain was relieved and she sucked in air as though it were ice, soothing her burning hand. Gradually, the pain subsided and Miiko found herself wishing that she had never come in here. The pinkette was in a state of ataraxia, anxiously wondering if she was now free or if the fact that the mark had filled in meant that she was now a light bearer, just like her older sister. That rose was a parergon in the events that had recently taken place in this room. "Who are you?" Miiko asked, lifting the black rose up as she jumped upright. Caster? Spirit? Was it similar to the bullet that Gavin possessed? "Is that your name? Martyr?" Miiko queried, wrinkling her nose. "That's a stupid title, it's a real name! Should I give you one?" Miiko looked down at the light bearing mark.
A kitten with a crown hovering over it's head, surrounded by a rose. Before now, Miiko had always thought it to be a cloud, but now she saw the mark for what it truly was, a symbol of unity. This plastic rose, along with herself (the Princess, obviously) would somehow come together. "This is great! I can fight like Stella now!" Maybe Miiko could find the bad people that had taken Stella away? She could bring her older sister home! "I'm gonna bring you home, come on!" Miiko's attitude had changed rather quickly. Miiko was no longer just a messenger for the rebellion, she now had a ghost, or whatever the Martyr was, that could fight for her! Yes, this strange paranormal being would protect Miiko, since, of course, Miiko was to be her Master. Miiko let out a short laugh, already devising ways in which this specter would be handy to have.
Miiko led the way back to the boat, humming to herself. Wait until Mommy and Daddy saw the treasure that Miiko brought home today! Miiko giggled, giddy with glee. "We're going to make a great pair, you and I!" She sure had gotten over the initial shock rather quickly. "I'm going to introduce you to my family," Miiko clambered down the steps and through the water, sloshing into her boat. "Ready?" She asked, once the martyr was inside, Miiko wasn't interested in hearing the whose and whats, but she figured she may as well listen while she rowed them back to the center of the base in Yavin. Then Miiko could take a turn explaining everything that had happened, since she had no idea how old this ghost was.
"So, tell me, who are you and what are you doing here? Why did you call me Caster? My name is Miiko! Miiko Miya and I'm the daughter of the leaders of the Rebellion against the Reign of L!" Miiko blinked her big blue eyes up at her new friend. "It's been a long time since I've had someone my age around here."
Prisca timidly shook her head, feeling more and more humiliated by the second. She wasn't the type for theatrics and dramatics like this, most definitely not! "I - um, n-no, that's not my name... it's my, it's..." Too busy stumbling over her words, the girl had already decided that Martyr was stupid. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, Prisca figured The Snitch would have been a more accurate descriptor. It's certainly the defining moment of her life, after all."I-if you want, you can... as a human, I was, um..." Was it really okay to tell this girl who she was? Prisca knew nothing about the current world and it's nuances, as far as she knew, her past and the entire Third World War was written into the history books and she was a hated figure worldwide because of what she did.
Prisca certainly hated herself enough for a world, in any case.
A meek little mouse she was and Prisca wriggled uncomfortably. "If you w-want, you can give me a name." She decided, looking off to the side, avoiding gazing directly at her Caster, this energetic cat-like girl. Already she could tell their entire partnership was going to be like a cat and mouse game. With the power now held within the rose, the room gradually became what it once was before all of this, just a normal dilapidated office building with hints of the company it used to house employees of. It must have been so long ag- oh, the girl was already leaving back to... the boat? Why was there a boat, why was there water everywhere? Prisca stared at the outside in wonder. Just how much had changed since she had been killed?
Sitting in the boat, hugging her knees to her chest, the mousy girl decided to try to get to know her Caster now. "I-I'm sorry, it's just that, um, Casters are what light bearers that can hold a Summoner are called." She explained as succinctly as she could, trying not to be in too much awe at how the world had changed. Now there was water everywhere, it was a sight to behold. A rebellion? So they were going to have to fight? Prisca figured as much... but she was still unhappy about it. "It's g-good to meet you, Miiko." She wanted to say her name but she was afraid, afraid that her real identity would just disgust this energetic child.
"But I'm-" No, it would be pointless to try and - "I died at sixteen, how old are you? You look y-younger than that?" Well, Prisca looked younger too, so maybe it was just similar in that. "What year is it? Why does everything look so different?" Prisca didn't know about calamities or anything, all she knew was that she was entrusted to help this girl fight against some big enemy for a chance to atone for what she did wrong. "Who is L? What does he do?" There was so much the Spirit was going to have to learn.
"A new name? I was never good at naming things," Miiko had always been practical with her names. If she had a white toy, it was named Snowy. If she had a doll with blonde hair and blue eyes, she always became someone she knew. "Alright, I'll call you Rose!" Miiko grinned as though she were so clever, having come up with a name for her new serv-er-companion, all on her own. Miiko hummed to herself, the ghost seemed surprised that they were boarding a boat. Had she never been inside of one? Had she never seen water before? Miiko giggled once again, it seems that today, she was going to be the smart one. Not only had Miiko found a new friend that she could boss around, but she had found Stella a rose! Yes, it was a good day to be the self declared Princess indeed. According to Rose, Miiko was a light bearer now, she had the power to summon this ghost. "What does the plastic rose have to do with it?" She asked, taking a break in order to allow her arms a rest.
They drifted near the basin that led to the tunnel underneath the rebel base. "I am sixteen, thank you very much!" She quipped with a huff, crossing her arms. "I'm just short for my age!" Short with a baby face never made for a good combo, but that, combined with her sparkling blue eyes, gave Miiko an innocence that others seemed to have a hard time resisting. "So we are the same age," she grinned wickedly. Maybe Miiko and Rose could do normal girl things? Albeit, Miiko never actually did normal girl things. She didn't have friends to talk about boys with, not that her overly protective parents would never let her around boys her age. There were no other girls to braid hair with or gossip about the news and their dictator with. Rose was now Miiko's first and only friend; not that the pink haired child would ever admit to such an embarrassing thing.
"It's 2234," Miiko informed her, scratching behind her ear. "Wait, do you not know what happened? What year did you die?" Miiko laughed haughtily, "I guess I'll just have to educate you!" She stood, rocking the boat just a bit. "Alright, listen up! During the final battle of World War 3, there was a Light Bearer with the power to change the world. After the death of her best friend, she destroyed the earth!" Miiko nodded, to her, of course, this all made sense. These were stories that Miiko had grown up hearing. "During this period of time, light bearers died out, now obsolete with how little was left of humanity." Miiko sat back down, this is where the story became a bit more intimate and needed more attention.
"The earth flooded, nature reclaimed what rightfully belonged to it." Miiko pointed up, where purple sky peaked through the leaves of the tallest tree this ghost had probably ever seen. "The islands are where humans live now, we use boats to get around and between our small sanctuaries are islands. Of course, there's always one idiot that wants to be on top!" Sadly, it wasn't Miiko either. "During this period of rebuilding, a man named L emerged from the shadows, claiming that he had captured the only remaining light bearer and would use her to take over the world. Naturally, this didn't sit well with the rest of us, hence the Rebellion to Oppose L! Any questions?"
Growing up in a world where big huge urban cities were the norm, sprawling across countries, it was very strange indeed to see a huge city reduced to nothing but rubble, for it to almost be uninhabited - and most eerie of all, there was water everywhere, the streets were replaced with gorges of water that needed to traversed by boats in order to get from one place to another. It was dizzyingly different from how the world was in her time - and Prisca - or Rose, her new name that she would cherish as her new identity - couldn't help but wonder if this dizziness was the feeling a medieval knight would have upon seeing the modern world of her time. "Th-the rose, it's... the object my soul is connected to, that's all." It was painful to recall just why the rose had been so important once upon a time.
"Rose. I'm, um, I'm grateful for the name, Cast - Miiko." Okay, why was she always so embarrassed? Why did this fluttery feeling of discomfort always come up whenever the slightest bit of attention was thrown her way? What kind of spirit would be so flimsy? The ruined landscape eventually faded away as they entered a tunnel, blocking out the scenery of what was once a city. The girl proclaimed her age and Prisca - or Rose - was pretty surprised to see that they really were the same age. This girl gave off the aura of a princess, spoiled but also lonely at the same time... a very different life from what Prisca lived, growing up in a broken home, with a twin sister she eventually killed out of petty jealousy.
2234. "I was... I died in 2144...." Rose said, dumbfounded. She felt like vomiting, but she didn't know if this physical body given to her by the Goddess - since who else could that girl made of light have been? - she didn't know if this body was human or if it had any special features or whatnot. So she decided to just listen to what Miiko was going to say, talking all about the end of the Third World War. Prisca almost wanted to laugh, but she wasn't brave enough to admit that she had been there, at the final battle, she even fought against the girl of prophecy and landed the killing blow on the wind mage, Nemesis. The part Rose wasn't educated about was, of course, what happened after the battle. She was dead after all.
Flooding, that much was obvious. And of course with humans in any society, there would always be a monster to come from the shadows to try to take advantage of everything. Wasn't Prisca just like one of them, a monster from the shadows that ratted everyone out? "Does this L have any light bearers?" If this girl was a light bearer, that meant the Rebellion obviously had at least some, and even one strong one would be able to turn the tide against an army without any light at all. That was what humans realized in her day and age, after all. "If, um.... how many other... Casters and Spirits are there?" Was it silly to hold out hope that she might even have a Spirit she recognized around? Maybe Essie or Miss Burns... any familiar face would help ground her in the current reality, because right now, it all just felt like a dream.
"Twenty one forty four?" Miiko gasped, "so you're like, a hundred years old! There's no way we're the same age!" Miiko wasn't an old lady! She pushed her hair back behind her shoulder with a kitten like "humph!" Miiko took up her paddles once more and began to row towards her home through the tunnel. "So your body, is it solid now? Or are you still a ghost?" Miiko could no longer see through Rose as though she were a specter, she had taken on a humanoid like quality and appearance. Miiko had never met a ghost up until now, she had heard her parents say that the ghosts of the past would eventually haunt them, but Miiko had always figured that it was a figure of speech. The light bearing symbol on her hand was proof that once again, light bearers were needed to bring balance to their floating world's. There was probably going to be more explanations needed, both for Miiko and Rose.
"If that rose is your soul, then how come I have to hold it? Shouldn't you put it inside of you or something?" As gross as it sounded, in Miiko's head it made the most sense. "Hey, what if you ate it? Then it would be inside of you!" Miiko giggled at her cleverness. They were at the tunnel now, the basin that led into it all clear. The temperature had dropped once more, the sky was becoming a cloudy gray. "It's probably going to snow today..." Miiko rifled through her backpack and withdrew her flashlight. "Here, hold this, I'm gonna row us inside." They entered the dark tunnel, the boat tipping towards Miiko. There wasn't much rowing needed this way, mostly stopping so that they didn't go down the rapids too quickly. The path remained dark until the end, where they were greeted by the flickering light of lanterns drilled into the sides of the cave.
"Welcome to the heart of Yavin, the World Tree." They bumped gently against one of the huge tree roots planted firmly in the center of their island. "Miiko! Back already!" Coco called with a grin, catching the rope Miiko threw towards him. "Yup! I got some interesting treasure today!" She grinned, allowing Coco to pull them into the port. He tied the rope to one of the stumps, anchoring them. "Coco, this is Rose, Rose, Coco. He's the boat dealer," she leaned in closer to Rose, "and a total rip off." Miiko whispered loudly, offering a hand out to Rose so that she wouldn't fall into the frigid waters. "Watch your step!" Once the two of them were safely on the dock, Miiko led the way towards the spiral staircase. Over here, it was much brighter and easier to see. "Electricity is something we have to save, so we mostly use fire lamps. Batteries are hard to come by," Miiko explained.
"We're in the process of setting up solar electricity, so it'll be much warmer!" She tugged her scarf up so that it wouldn't drag on the ground and led Rose straight into the heart of Yavin. "We all made our home underneath the World Tree. The operations and bases are inside some of the abandoned buildings and our big boat port is to the left of the island." It was an island, yes, but there was nothing tropical about it. The wind was brutal and cold, whistling through the tunnel. At long last they reached the top of the staircase, revealing a bustling market place full of tents selling fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, hats, scarves, and mostly everything you needed to survive. Miiko went right up to the center square, turned the old water pump three times to the left and waited. "What do you think? Pretty impressive right?" Miiko grinned as the water pump began to rumble and moved upwards, revealing an entryway into yet another tunnel.
Prisca squirmed uncomfortably, wringing her hands on the thin fabric given to her by the girl made of light before she was taken here. It was similar to the medical robes she wore back when they were experimenting no her, injecting her with various scary painful drugs in order to try and make her a light bearer. "I, um, I was still dead at sixteen though." Rose mumbled to herself so quietly that she might as well not have even said it. She certainly didn't feel almost over a hundred or anything. Her mind was still that of a sixteen year old... though perhaps quite a bit older thanks to the experiences she lived through. "I think I'm solid." Prisca tapped her nose with almost scientific curiosity. "This body is physical.." There was an explanation on how it worked, but then-
Then the girl, Miiko, she kept on rambling on like a truck now, not stopping for anything. "You're my Caster." Rose's voice was very quiet indeed as she said this, staring down at her knees so as to not accidentally look her caster in the eye. The Goddess had given her a basic rundown on how all of it worked. "I can only make this form if the rose is in your possession." Basicaly the Goddess's soul shard acted as a channel, but the power that runs through the channel is entirely the light coming off of Miiko here. If Miiko let go, she would be reduced to a spirit again, warping her surroundings with her despair and energy. Ah, Miiko was like a bulldozer, she probably wasn't even listening anymore.
And so they arrived at the heart of the city of Yavin, apparently, known as the World Tree. That brought to mind another name but it was so distant and lost in time that Prisca couldn't recall it even if she tried. Prisca stepped off the boat, the vessal's owner was there, apparently named Coco. Touching her Caster's hand felt very strange indeed but Prisca - oh and now Coco was staring at her. The mousy girl stared at her own hands to avoid his gaze, shrinking. "Never saw that girl before." The man muttered as they left him to go deeper into the city. This was clearly where the inhabitants of Yavin lived, rather than the aboveground, which looked almost barren and empty now. "I-it's all so different." Prisca gasped, eyes wide with wonder as she just stared at everything. It was impossible to even guess which continent this city was on.
Okay, something needed to be done. In this thin robe, Prisca was downright just shivering, and it was only going to get colder. But was it really okay to ask about this sort of thing? "It's, um, it's... cold." She mumbled, stuttering over herself a few times now. Her outfit was most definitely not suitable for this at all. "I-is there any... other... um, I don't have... dollars on me or anything..." Assuming they even used the currency of the old world anymore. But she also wanted to see the leader of the rebellion. Timid as she was, Prisca did fight in wars, after all. She was a spirit, a fighter... and yet the slightest idle glance her direction made her shrink and want to hide.
Miiko frowned and eyed Rose up and down. "You're around Stella's size," she observed. Except Stella had a larger bust, which made Miiko snicker. "Come on, I've got some nuts, I can get you something." Miiko looked around the market square. If they were going up, Rose would need some quality clothing to keep her warm from the winds. "What's a dollar? Is that old time money?" Miiko riffled through her pockekts, looking for nuts. "We use trade!" She held up what looked to be loose screws and bolts. "These are really valuable because you can use them to fix broken things." Miiko found them quite often when she went out in search of her treasure. "You'll learn the ropes pretty quickly, it's super easy. You know, unless you're dumb." She made a face and happily skipped on her way, taking them to a tent that sold handmade clothing.
"This woman loves me, just stay quiet, I'll do all of the talking." Miiko led Rose underneath the tent. "So, see anything you like?" The shop keeper bustled out quickly, wearing an elaborate hand stitched shirt and pants. "Miiko!" Celine squealed, lifting the girl off of her feet in a crushing hug. "What can I do you for today?" She let Miiko down, allowing the small pink haired one to catch her breath. "Well, I found a new comer." Miiko lied, pocketing the black rose. "She was drifting in a boat offshore, maybe an outcast of another island? Poor thing has amnesia! Can't even remember her own name, shame really." Miiko shook her head, playing the shop keeper like a harpsichord. "Anyway, I thought I could do her a solid and at least get her a winter jacket or something, I mean I have-" Miiko stopped to count the screw in her hand.
"Six brass nuts and two silver ones." Celine stood upright, blinking back tears. She had always been a sucker for a sob story and a good hit of gossip. "Oh sweetie, you put those away! I'll get you some stuff, hang on, let me see what we have left over in the back."[/color] Celine went behind a curtain and emerged with clothing that were out of season. They were still fall, rather than the winter that would be coming ahead. "I'll just leave this box here, pick anything you like. I was having a hard time selling these anyhow," Celine walked away to deal with another customer who was trying to sneak away with a very nice coat. Miiko turned to Rose, "so? You heard the lady, take anything you like." Miiko began rifling through the box for something so that Rose wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.
In the box was a pair of suspenders that Miiko took to, she lifted them out of their container and strapped them on, deciding that she wanted them. Yes, these would do nicely to hold her skirts up when they were too big. Miiko received plenty of hand-me-down's when rebellion member's children grew out of their clothing. Miiko was so small that she was still wearing kid's clothes, not to say that she couldn't put together cute outfits even with the juvenile articles she was often given.
Once again there was that name, Stella. Prisca's first thought that Stella was someone important to Miiko, just like how Essie was an important memory for her. Well, the ghost would eventually find out that that was more true than she'd ever thought - but more on that later, possibly, much later. "Y-you don't mind?" Technically the Caster was responsible for the Spirit since the Spirit was considered alive only thanks to the light energy coming off of the Caster, so perhaps it made some modicum of sense. Casters could give absolute orders in return, that the Spirit has to follow. "Trading... barters... th-that sounds simpler than currency." It made more sense to trade useful things rather than pieces of paper... but that was just what Prisca thought, she was hardly an economist, the only thing she ever became was a mass murderer.
The marketplace was almost like a cultural exchange of ideas and items, it was most definitely a sight to behold. Despite the Calamity destroying civilization, humans managed to rebuild and set up some sort of society in only a hundred years, it was incredible. "Y-yes, okay." So she remained silent as her Caster handled the lies, and Rose pitched in by nodding a few times and her wide eyed stare at everything was certainly a point in their favor, making her look like a complete airhead that knew nothing. Maybe that wasn't an inaccurate claim. "O-okay, thank you." She said to the woman, deciding to start rifling through the box, glad that her Caster didn't have to spend money on her. Food on the other hand, might just end up being an issue if the pangs in her stomach were true.
It took some effort but Rose eventually found an outfit that she decided she liked. Skin-colored tights, with a short pleated skirt, and then above that was just a normal white blouse with a black sleeveless sweater overtop, all of that furnished nicely with an elaborate frilly red bow above the bosom. All in all Rose decided she liked this new look better than the look she had as an experiment. "I l-like it, thank you." She said when the woman came to check on her. "Memory or not, you're welcome with us. A friend of Miiko is a friend of mine!" And making Rose want to wriggle and whimper, she was forced in a bone-crushing hug.
And finally, all that was done, it was time to go meet the leader of this so-called rebellion. Prisca couldn't keep the hope out of her voice as they approached the edifice. "I'm, um, I'm r-really..." She didn't need to finish it, Miiko had to know how shy and scared of people she was. "But the ch-chance to meet someone I once knew.... If by any kindness Essie was a Spirit... Prisca wanted to rely on that hope no matter what. "L-let's go meet your father." Hopefully he was better than Prisca's had been.
Miiko turned around once Rose started stuttering again. "Yes, that'll do," Miiko nodded, it was almost similar to Miiko's own choice of clothing. "Alright-let's head o-" Celine marched over to squeal and wrap Roe in a hug. Poor girl looked as though she was going to be crushed; Miiko snickered. "Thanks Celine," Miiko gave her a quick hug. Celine ruffled her hair, "I've got something for you too," Celine handed Miiko a headband with points on them. "There used to be animals around called cats, I thought that this would suit you." Miiko put it on and seemed to brighten at the new treasure, "I like it, thanks!" She gave Celine one last hug, then turned to face Rose. "Alright you, let's go to the Rebel Base." Miiko led the way through the market place and back to the water pump. She turned it three times, the water pump moving up to reveal the staircase into one of the deeper tunnels.
"We're going through here," Miiko informed Rose, stepping onto the strange elevator. "Hold on tight," the pump shivered, slowly moving back into place in the ground. The lights flickered on, revealing what almost appeared to be a service tunnel made entirely of concrete. "Back in the day, these were fallout shelters, this one was made for someone called the President? I'm not really sure, but they are certainly useful for hiding rebels!" It didn't even cross Miiko's mind that Rose could possibly be a spy of L's, that all of this was simply some strange act in the hopes of confusing and misleading the rebels to collect information and report back to her leader. Miiko skipped along, humming happily. Every so often they would pass a door with a label in a language that Miiko didn't speak. Most of the languages of the world were dead, the new languages were incredibly different.
"So, how did you get to Yavin? Or were you just sent here like some emissary from an imaginary deity?" Wait a second, if ghosts existed, then did the afterlife? "Hey, have you ever seen Heaven? What's it like!" Miiko was walking backwards now, she didn't need her eyes to see which way to go. At long last they reached another rickety staircase. "We're technically not supposed to go this way, but I wasn't supposed to leave so I had to go the secret way." Miiko went up the staircase and poked her head down. "Hey! Hurry up!" She jogged up the stairs, in great shape considering how short and stout she was.
On the surface, the wind was bitter and cold, it had already begun to snow. "There? You see it?" Miiko pointed to the top of the World Tree. "That's where I live." They were standing beside a cluster of houses, all neatly built in different shapes and sizes. "We'll be taking that-"
"Miiko!" Miiko stiffened, Gavin jogged over, appearing frantic. "We've been looking all over for your! Jace is worried sick!"
Of course the Spirits were unknowingly translated into the new language spoken by humans upon revival, there was no way the Goddess would just allow them to be thrown in a world and be completely unable to even speak to anyone whatsoever. The mention of someone named President was all the ghost needed to confirm that this used to be America, but now it was something different entirely. Were people even aware of the other continents anymore, or had humans regressed so far that they had no idea? It was impossible to know for sure. "When I died the Goddess put me into the rose." Prisca explained softly, a flush rising on her cheeks because of how silly it sounded. It was the truth though! "If there is an afterlife, um, I never got the chance." She had been asleep for the last hundred years in the boundary between life and death. "All I know is that, I... I was, um, sent to fight for your sake, Miiko, because you're my Caster."
Miiko stiffened at that man calling her name but there was someone next to him that was even more striking. He was just as he was in life as he was now in death, with that dyed red hair cut in that rebellious way, his slanted smile that took no orders from anyone, that arrogant lilt in his eyebrows. Who else could it be but - well, the name Callum did try to come to mind but then a new name struck her consciousness. His title. The Rebel. It - in the later months of the war, Callum did fight for the rebels, trying to defeat both Japan and America. They were crushed, but he did end up killing off someone named Ronan with his power, and Prisca figured that was enough for him to be considered important enough.
He was the one she wanted dead when she ratted everyone out. And every they all died, he had the arrogance to continue living? Not only that, but he thought of himself as important enough to be brought back to fight? His face twisted into anger then, he too, wasn't happy with this arrangement at all. "Miiko." Callum said in a barely controlled voice. "You might be a Caster now, but-" At those words Gavin's eyes widened as he noticed the timid mousy ghost behind Miiko - "you should know, that girl, she's-" Prisca glared hard at him, her hatred overpowering her. She didn't want - she didn't want to be known as Prisca, she wanted to throw away that aspect of hers. But she was furious that he escaped, that he survived, he was the one that was supposed to die.
"Is Essie here too?" She asked, interrupting him and Callum gave her a blank stare in response. "There's only one other spirit so far." Was it Essie? Was her sister here, was there a chance to apologize to the one that mattered most? "It's that idol that sang for Japan during the war." Callum sounded rude, dismissive. "Her Caster is that spacey girl that's so airheaded she doesn't even know how to read." Well... that meant nothing to Prisca. She knew Daisy, she was on the enemy's side of the war. But she didn't know the resistance well enough to know who her Caster might be. So it wasn't Essie. Prisca's heart sank, she hoped that maybe...
A hundred years of resentment and hatred was bubbling up between the two, but neither of them were willing to bring it up now, in front of their Casters.
"I told you where I was going!" Miiko protested, clearly not sorry for his actions. Gavin put his hands on his hips, looking more like a fatherly figure than an older brother. Gavin took out a small black box, pressing the button on the side of it. "I found her, over." Miiko sighed, she figured this was where she was taken prisoner once more. "Your hand-" Miiko held it out with a grin. "Like it? I'm a light bearer now, just like Stella!" She pointed to Rose, "that's my ghost!" Rose and Callum seemed to know each other, perhaps they had been comrades before death? "Who's Essie?" Never mind, it didn't really matter. "It looks like a happy reunion," Miiko giggled, oblivious to the fact that the two were so clearly enemies. Gavin sighed, "welcome Rose. We'll be going this way back to the house." Gavin led the way to the elevator, there was a track around the tree with what looked like a car mounted onto it. "Step onto the platform, be careful." Miiko jumped into the car easily, patting the seat beside her for Rose.
"How's Mom doing?" Miiko asked once the doors had closed. "Not well, Jace told her not to get out of bed, but Athena insisted on making breakfast." Miiko sat back in her chair, not liking this news. The interior of the car had lounge cars that had been re-purposed and bolted down. "About a year ago, my Mom became sick," Miiko explained to Rose. She was trying to remember not to say Mommy anymore, because her parents had told her that big girls used Mom and Dad, not Mommy and Daddy. In truth they were just trying to spoil Miiko less and allowing her to do things like a child was one of the those behaviors they were attempting to train out of her, like a dog or an unruly cat. "It's an illness no one's seen before, but the Doctor thinks that unless we take her to a Capitol City, she'll die within two years."
"Athena of course refuses to leave her husband and daughter," Gavin filled in. "So when we get into the house, just keep your voices down." If Mommy was asleep then Miiko didn't want to disturb her. Gavin pushed the lever, the car making its way up the track. "I can almost see the next island from here!" Miiko pointed out the window. The next island had been rising for a while now, they suspected that soon it would be ready for humans to move in. "Sometimes islands will just pop up out of nowhere! Dad says it's because the water level is lowering, but I think it's because the lion turtles are coming up for air. Gavin doesn't believe in them, but I've seen the lion turtles!" These were fibs Stella had told her. Miiko believed that she had seen a lion turtle when she nearly drowned as a child.
The car came to an abrupt stop, reaching the top of the tracks. Gavin released the handle, allowing them to park. The doors opened slowly into the branches of the largest tree in existence. "I can't wait to introduce you! Dad is gonna be so happy!"
Callum, Gavin, and even Rose had no choice but to stare with incredulity at the oblivious Miiko who seemed to have no awareness whatsoever of the angry sparks flying between the two ghosts, and the history they had with one another. There was so much they wanted to say to the other, there was so many times they relived their hatred of the other in their respective purgatories - and yet here they were, in a cruel twist of fate, forced to team up and work together. All of their hateful words were going to have to be left unsaid for now, to wait until both the Casters weren't here so that they could hash things out. Otherwise, thee would be no way the two would ever cooperate with one another, there was simply too many negative feelings floating between them.
Rose tried to listen about what was happening to Miiko's mother but her thoughts were interrupted by a soft singing that was permeating the place. It sounded both ethereal and far too familiar all the same. She raised an eyebrow at this and Callum scowled, nodding his affirmation. "That's Daisy." He answered, something the mousy girl could have guessed on her own eventually. She always sang in Japanese before but now that they were fixed to know whatever language the current living humans spoke, they could finally understand the words. "Jellyfish is her Caster." Gavin said with a wry smile. "She's, ah, a bit of a character." Callum crossed his arms in frustration. "She's useless, she never wants to help with anything, she just lies there and doesn't talk at all!" It was clear what The Rebel thought of them. "And Daisy's evil, she did bad things during the war."
Singing to trick people into joining the military was definitely not a good thing to have done. As for Athena... well, Prisca didn't want to judge, but she couldn't help from doing so at the same time. If she really didn't want to leave her husband and daughter... then why not go get some help? Why be stubborn and just stay here and then eventually die? That sounded far too Martyr-like, and that was coming from someone with that title in her name! As for the island, it was impossible to know how it worked, really. "It might be lion turtles." Rose said shyly and Callum rolled his eyes. "Sure, Rose, if that's what you want to call yourself." He spoke with passive aggressiveness. As much as Rose hated, it was justified. She did kill everyone.
But she wasn't going to let her new name be talked down upon. "Rose is the name my Caster chose for me." She said, already blushing at how silly it sounded to take it so seriously. For her though, it represented a fresh start, a chance to cast away her old persona and become someone new and free from guilt, at least for now. "It's important to me." And then the car stopped, it was time to see the people in charge here. Prisca could only hope that they were better than President Cross and Emperor Shoku had been in their time. Someone was sleeping on the steps before entering the door of the tree's highest point, blowing a bubble out of her nose in her slumber, and a familiar brunette was just softly singing about wishes and dreams to her with a gentle smile on her face. The Singer. Daisy. "So the rumors were correct." Daisy said in a clear, musical voice, stopping her song. "Princess Miiko really did become a Caster."
"Ugh, of course she's sleeping." Miiko rolled her eyes and stepped off of the platform and onto the tree trunk. "Miiko!" Jace yelled as soon as her feet touched the bark. Miiko stiffened, Rose was staring amicably at Daisy and Callum now. "Yes Daddy?" Miiko asked, her inflection dripping with sweetness. Jace appeared in the doorway, silver hair glistening in the sun. "How many times have I told you not to leave the Tree?" Miiko held her hands behind her back and looked down, toeing the ground. "I'm sorry Daddy, I got bored and I wanted to get something for Stella's birthday." Jace sighed and lifted Miiko off of her feet. "How could I stay mad at you?" He inquired, turning towards the group. "Who's the newcomer?" Another good question, one that Miiko had come completely prepared to answer. She wriggled out of her Father's arms and back onto her feet, showing off her fancy new mark.
"I'm a light bearer now! Cast-something. Yeah! This is my ghost, Rose." Miiko said proudly, pushing Rose forward to meet her Dad. "Rose, this is my Daddy Jace, Daddy, this is Rose. Well, what do you think? Impressive, right? Now I can be just like Stella!" Jace's eyes widened, then narrowed. No, he was not happy, he was not happy at all. "Miiko, where did you find this?" He looked at the black rose carefully held inside of one hand. Miiko brought it up close to her chest in defense, as though he was going to take it away. "I got inside of an abandoned building, the one next to the bank." Miiko's eyes widened, she was trying to distract her Father again with that childlike wonder. "There was gold all over the floor! You should have seen it Daddy!" Her dad turned away, hands balled into fists.
There was no way to stop what had happened, but there was one thing that Jace could do. He wasn't going to lose another daughter. Slowly, Jace took a few deep breaths in and out, then turned back to Miiko. "This is great," he smiled, "now you'll be able to collect messages faster." Miiko's shoulders slumped. "Messages...? No, but-I want to fight! I want to help the Rebellion!" Jace shook his head, "you are helping, you're doing very important work." He turned towards Rose, "I'd like a word with you inside." They walked past Miiko, entering the inside of their humble home. "About Stella's size," he murmured in observation. "Rose she called you? What's your real name?" Miiko stood outside of the house, shaking in rage and disappointment. "Miiko," Gavin started, watching as the little brat's eyes welled up with tears. "I wanted to fight, I wanted to be useful. I thought-I thought now that I have one I could finally do something good."
"Your job is to protect Miiko," Jace's expression was serious. "She is not to fight, she is not to go near the battlefield." He would not be losing another daughter to L's forces. "If you have to, kill her. Miiko is not to be taken by the other force's." Miiko knew too much about what went on in the Rebellion, if she were to be captured, their entire operation would be monopolized.
Suddenly, Prisca felt anxiety ripple through her body, it was such a powerful wave that she wanted to puke, her knees were knocking, she didn't want anything to do with this. But she didn't have a choice either, she was going to be forced into it, to be made the center of attention. Trying to hide the fact that she wanted to cry she chanced a smile at the rebellion's leader, a fatherly type that didn't look like he was capable of scolding his daughter at all. And so Prisca as Rose was introduced and she did her best smile but had the feeling that anyone looking at her had the ability to tell just how terrified she was of being examined like this. "Wow, she's shaking like a mouse." Daisy said, amused, petting her Caster's head, the strange sleeping girl with her head resting on her Spirit's legs.
The fear only grew worse when it seemed that Jace wanted a private word with her inside. What was wrong, what did he want? The house was nicer than she could have expected under the circumstances, and it was a house ruled by nature rather than humans ruling nature like they had throughout the years in the past. "U-um.... my name is, um..." More than anything, Prisca wanted to pee in terror. She couldn't handle this kind of intense pressure, not at all. She lowered her face and stared intently at the wood floor, squirming and wringing her hands, wishing the rat's tail mark was hidden. "Pr-Prisca. Priscilla for sho... Prisca's short for, uh, Priscilla." It was the name of one of her dead aunts that she never met. It was apparently a family tradition, it was why Essie was named Esme, after all. Old fashioned names, they ended up with cuter nicknames Prisca and Essie.
Jace didn't seem to know about who she was, gladly. But he did garner that there was a reason for her hiding her identity. "Whoever you might have been historically, you should remember that as a Spirit, it's your job to serve your Caster." Rose nodded, unable to gain the will to say anything. It was the truth after all, she was mandated to act with the best interest of her Caster. "I-I'd rather not f-fight." Prisca said truthfully, shaking like a leaf as she made the admission. "But I'll keep her safe... n-no matter what." Her ability wasn't flashy or anything, but it was possibly one of the best if you were creative about how you used it.
When she returned, Callum and Daisy were fighting about who had the better Caster, off to the side. "My Gavin is always happy to help out and he's always serving bravely to fight!" The Rebel Callum said as if that won him all the points. Daisy flipped her long brown hair back and smiled dazzlingly. "Jellyfish and I have also been on the front lines, and dare I say, our abilities surpass yours." Was it just a rule that all Spirits were always at each other's throats? A paper was in Prisca's hand and she showed it to Miiko, a mission from Jace, to go on a suppy run to a nearby neutral city of Jaspar. They'd need boat fare, however. "H-he said... an easy mission, since I'm... new to .... I-I'm s-sorry..." She didn't even know why she was apologizing, but she felt the compulsion to with the way everyone was staring.
"Hey, it's okay, I'm sure Jace will change his mind once he sees how great you are at your job!" Miiko closed her eyes and took in a deep, convulsive breath, but that only made her cry harder. Daisy rolled her eyes, starting in a song in an attempt to soothe Miiko's nerves, but that only served to irritate the poor girl. Miiko just wanted to be like her idol, Stella. She wanted to do what her big sister did, she wanted to fight in the rebellion and assist in the effort to defeat L. "Oh come on, you can't expect to be a soldier and a crybaby!" Miiko rubbed her eyes, sniffling. Gavin pat her shoulder, attempting a hug, but Miiko turned away. "Come on Mimi, it's not all bad. Look, at least you've got a super cool family? You've got me too," Miiko's sobs quieted, the door had opened. Jace and Rose emerged, one looking as though she too, might sob, the other trying to put on a friendly face. He gestured to Gavin, who got up and jogged over, the door shutting behind him.
Rose had a slip of parchment in her hand, one that spoke about their first mission. Miiko took it between two fingers, using her other hands to wipe at her eyes. "Fine," she looked down at the island name. "Fine, we'll do it and we'll be the best darn pair! Then Daddy won't be able to veto our comradely and bravery!" Miiko grabbed Rose's wrist and dragged her towards the platform. "I have plenty to get us across to Jaspar, it isn't far so the journey shouldn't take us long." Miiko had run this errand before, she knew what to get. There were a few new things on the list, if her Father had somehow sent word ahead of time then it would all be there, waiting for them. If not, it could take a few hours, a day at most. "We'll have to take the ferry that runs between here and Tora," Miiko informed her spirit. She pulled the lever to let them down, the car making its way to the base of the World Tree.
Miiko hopped out of the car and led Rose towards the ferry port, where a large boat was docked, waiting for them to make the supply run. "Tora is a farm nation, one of the last ones left. Jaspar is a stop between here and there," Tora was another important island, but Miiko wasn't allowed to go that far. She was hardly allowed around Yavin on her own. "Tora is controlled by L, we lost it in a raid a few months ago." It was a warmer climate in Tora, therefore they could grow crops all year round, rather than Yavin who had to rely on hydroponics during the brutal winters that iced over the seas and prevented many from getting around the island.
The ferry was waiting for them, it loomed in the distance like a large blue beacon in sea. "Two to Jaspar," Miiko handed over ten nuts to the ferry driver. "It'll take about two hours to get there," Miiko informed Rose. "Watch your step!" She jumped onto the boat, minding the gap between the boardwalk and their watercraft. "I hope you're not afraid of the open sea." Miiko wiggled her eyebrows, hoping for a show.
Miiko's eyes were red, she must have cried while Rose was talking to Jace. She might be an idiot, but she knew how to tell the signs, but try as she might, Prisca just didn't have enough self confidence to go ahead and try to comfort Miiko. She didn't know how and maybe whatever she tried would just end up being an embarrassment... but then the paper was enough to make her Caster summon the will to show her determined face, one that was ready to take on any challenge headed her way. "Y-yes, we'll be great." Hopefully Prisca could also learn how to be confident and stop stuttering out of anxiety all the time. Miiko went on to describe what they would have to do and Rose nodded along, glad that someone knew what to do.
The cruise ship was there, or at least, this generation's version of a cruise ship. It was bigger than the small private rowing boat rented by Miiko when they first met and it was certainly large - but it wasn't quite on the same level as the giant yachts the rich elites did during Prisca's time. The rich and powerful could practically house a small city on their yachts by the time the third world war hit and the Calamity destroyed everything. "It's pretty." Rose said, slightly enamored by the sight of seeing a large ship like this sailing through what was once a city. Even though water had flooded the world, you could still see the remains of what used to be a city even in the open water, crumpled roofs of sky scrapers, and other such sights. From Prisca's guess, this was the metropolis of New York, just a hundred years later.
"Then one day we'll be there to help get Tora back." Prisca said with a nod, trying to sound brave like Miiko. She was - she was a Spirit, she lived her life and died, she was considered important enough by a Goddess to come back, she was specially chosen. So she couldn't just be this meek little mouse too afraid to say her opinion! ... but suddenly changing into a confident person, that wasn't going to just happen overnight. So the two girls boarded the ship, flashing their tickets and they were allowed on. "N-no, I'm not scared, it's just..."
Rose waited until they were eventually in a place where they wouldn't be easily overheard. The Martyr had a feeling that it'd be better not to advertise the fact that she wasn't from this time period. If this L somehow learned - no, it was best to stay as hidden as can be. "In my time, only the richest of people were allowed on boats, it was a luxury the commons weren't allowed to have." In her year, the income disparity was worse than ever before, the rich getting richer, the poor being squandered, it was like a return to the feudal days of lords and peasants. "It's just... st-strange, that's all." Everything about this was just so strange, being thrown a hundred years in the future like this. But she had a duty... if she wanted forgiveness from Essie... she had to do this well, right? "Th-th-..." A deep blush settled on the spirit's cheeks. "Thank you for naming me, Cast... Miiko."
"These people built everything around the rebellion, their entire lives revolve around it." Miiko informed Prisca. "We're the second largest Rebellion in the region! The first is a different nation, but you'll learn all about that later." Miiko informed her, the two of them getting on board the boat that would take the to Jaspar. "Look out for a Lion Turtle, sometimes when you hop between islands you can see them." Miiko was surprised by this mission, she had always been confined to Yavin, only allowed out when her parents were around. They were over protective of their little kitten, "when it gets really cloudy, fish will pop up on the surface, it's too cold for that now though." Just as predicted, snow had begun to fall. "It's not much warmer in Jaspar, I'm afraid." Miiko sat down on the railing of the ship, swinging her legs. She wasn't afraid of falling in because unlike the last time, Miiko knew how to swim.
"Only rich people could have boats? But then how did everyone else get around?" Miiko blinked. Did they use horses? Or those strange metal boxes with wheels? There was no use for cars these days, other than the name, Miiko wasn't sure what they were. What did they do? How did they move? "Did people just stay inside their houses all day?" Miiko's mouth was moving at a mile a minute. She was always a curious little kitten, wanting to know about everything and everyone. "Hmph! If only the rich get to do stuff like have boats, then they must have been really mean to everyone else!" There was no rich or poor these days, being rich was subject to your means of living and how much you could share with the community. Someone who was poor was a receiver of help or care. An old lady would be poor, but a strong young man would be considered rich.
"No problem, I needed something to call you. I couldn't just refer to you as Weirdo or Specter," she smiled, thinking herself to be a generous Princess. "Get off the railing!" Someone yelled and Miiko pouted, sliding back onto the floor. She kept her scarf in check, not wanting the wind to whip it away. "Here, you must be hungry, I snagged us some snacks." Miiko handed over a small cloth pouch full of cookies. "The baker makes them everyday for my Mom, he feels bad that she's sick and the leader of a rebellion." Miiko often stole cookies from the cookie jar when her parents weren't looking. No one in her family was very good at cooking, except Gavin who lived in their home because he had, had relations to Stella. They were going to get married eventually, they had hoped to have kids.
Now, unless Stella returned home, Gavin would be looking at other girls. Miiko had already seen it, the way he came home smelling of perfume, the little lipstick marks on his collar. Cheater. Miiko wouldn't allow him to forget about her big sister so easily, everyone else acted as though Stella were dead. "Good cookies right?" Miiko winked, "I think they're the best in Yavin!"
There's so much that Prisca needed to learn if she wanted to really be useful. She imagined this dysphoria was the same for the other Spirits as well, wasn't it? Callum, Daisy, they probably were just as disoriented when they were first summoned by their respective Casters. "I-I'll keep my eye out..." Rose agreed, wondering what a lion turtle even looked like. She hadn't heard of it, but a hundred years wasn't really enough time for evolution to take place and change a species. Mutations, maybe? Rose wasn't a scientist, not even as Prisca, so it was probably useless to try and speculate. The spirit was never good at directions, she had no idea if the boat was going north or south or anything... but if it was only a two hour ride, most likely it wouldn't make much a difference to Jaspar one way or another.
Prisca paused for a moment, considering how she wanted to go about talking of the past - or of her time period, back when she was alive. Things were drastically different back then to now, most likely it was so different Miiko wouldn't even be able to comprehend it in the slightest. But Miiko's curious eyes wanted to know and the Spirit knew she had to comply to her Caster's wishes. "In my time, the rich controlled everything with money. They were powerful, and no one could stand against them." People with money could do whatever they wanted. They could, for example, build secret bases all over Tokyo and never be questioned as long as you had enough. "If you're rich enough, people will turn a blind eye... and you can do evil things and no one can stop you.
America was worse off than Tokyo in many ways. Politics was completely controlled by the wealthy and no one else got to have any say. Suddenly it became about money, and all semblance of democracy was stripped away. "Maybe the girl of prophecy had the right idea when she reset the world." Her tummy growled again and it was still strange having to eat. Prisca wasn't even sure if this body could handle food of this time period. "Th-thanks." She ate with her head turned away, for some reason embarrassed about the idea of being watched while munching. They tasted different... but more wholesome, if that made sense. None of the processedness was in these cookies, they were all homemade. "Better than in my time." Prisca said with a half smile.
She overheard someone talking. He was dressed up in some strange outfit and was talking, drawing a cloud on a platform of sorts. Her ears pricked up curiously but wasn't sure exactly what was going on. "-will save us! As long as we pray to her, the Immortal Girl of the ancient Prophecy will come and protect us from tyranny and evil!" He was spouting things and people were listening, scared, afraid, of the coming of L. "...Immortal Girl?" But Yui had to be dead by now, right? "The Immortal Girl will save us, as long as we pray and repent."
