Summer is never afraid to speak her mind, even when it would just be better to keep her mouth closed. She doesn't mean to hurt someone else's feelings, but isn't it better to be honest than to be nice? Her parents tried to instill the "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all", but Summer finds that route to be incredibly boring. That mindset does cause a lot of fighting between Summer and other people. Some seem to think, with an ultra genius older brother who's just successful all around, that her behavior is her way of rebelling and trying to get attention. Well, they aren't necessarily wrong about the attention part, but Summer is a stubborn one who likes to be right even when she knows she's wrong. She blames her father and his own boldness when speaking with others. This isn't to say she doesn't respect her parents, in fact, she holds them in high regard and adores her parents. There's just a side of her that lives for the fights and the fire.
The person always there to mellow her out is Mason. Of course, they have their arguments and wrestle a lot, but for the most part, he can keep her in check. He helps her manage the anger issues she buries, just as she helps him with his anxiety. She's surprisingly mature about helping Mason, and helping others deal with their emotion. When she can tell someone's in distress, she can keep a cool and calm composure even with the most distressing people.
With Mason's disappearance, she feels like her fire's been snubbed out. Every day feels longer than the next, and the anger she's buried is bursting out piece by piece, and she's been lashing out at anyone that tries to help. The grouchy, glaring personality that has taken over is her only way of coping with not knowing where Mason is. She's called his phone a number of times, even tried to steal her parents' car to search for him where his car was dumped. She's terrified for him.

They lived as a normal American family: cheering Mason at his baseball games, getting flowers for Summer's recitals, and homemade dinner every night. While Summer had a few she could call friends, she earned a few more when Mason started the Los Angeles Neighbors' Club. Most of them were in Mason's grade, save for herself and her best friend Remy. They treated her like the kid of the group, but she didn't mind. Having those people around was like having a bunch of siblings in the house. But even while having those older kids to look up to, she still was a bit of a troublemaker. Her parents were completely supportive of her pursuit of the arts, but they were not happy with her sudden increase in detentions and suspensions. Once puberty hit, arguments and vulgar language turned into fist fighting. That's when she started having her own group of friends, the ones she met in anger management.
She wasn't the only one going to therapy soon enough. Summer was terrified when she'd heard of Mason's panic attack at the DMV, and worked with her parents to know the signs of an attack and how to help Mason through it. Mason's attacks instilled in her a sense of maturity she hasn't experienced before. Mason was usually the tough older brother who stood up for her whenever he could; seeing him like this reminded her that he's only a year old, and he isn't invincible.
It was a sunny, perfect day when she went with her parents to the police station to file a missing person's report for Mason. He was just going to Stanford, a trip he'd made a few times before. After he was already supposed to be home, Emmett and Jocelyn were getting nervous, and Summer's stomach was churning. The police found Mason's car broken down on the side of the road but Mason was no where in the vicinity. Summer closed in on herself, locking herself away in her room and not opening up to anyone who wasn't Mason. The only time she left the room was to sneak out in her parents' car and search around the area they found Mason's car. Summer spent eighteen hours searching for Mason in the nearby forest before trudging to the nearest rest spot and passing out at the counter. Needless to say, she didn't find Mason, and only succeeded in scaring her parents even more. Now, she resigns herself to climbing out her window to sit on the roof and smoke a few cigarettes.
She had so many dreams. She would join Jane at Juliard after she graduated, become a ballerina and a painter, and move to New York how she always wanted to. Now? If they can't find Mason, she can't even comprehend how to live without him. She's so lost without him, even to herself.
