Ferndale, California. It's a town where everybody knows everybody, and where no secret can go unspoken for very long. It has its problems like most remote small towns, but it's never had issues quite like this before. Something truly menacing has gripped the citizens in fear, and for the first time in decades, they are locking their doors and giving every new face a suspecting eye. Who could blame them? This is the perfect place to retire, raise a family, settle down, and just live the small-town American dream. Not anymore, though. Something wicked is amiss. Now? No one trusts even their own neighbor.
For the last six months, pairs of bodies have been found in the woods, riverbanks, and in other quiet and less traveled areas of Ferndale. One female, one male. Both had their faces removed, and the medical examiner ruled that this was done premortem. Shortly after, the male was castrated and then killed. Within minutes, so was the female. They would be laid to rest nude and bare, displayed holding hands as if they were a pair of lovers. Yet, they were not. None of the victims are connected in any other way. The only similarities are that they look similar to each other, and they each lived in towns along the 101 Freeway. The male and female in each pair lived anywhere from five to ten minutes away from one another, but otherwise - they never knew each other. It's very likely that they've never even seen each other.
Thus far, there have been a dozen bodies - six "couples" found in a similar manner. The Ferndale Sheriff knows that this is a job was more than this small town is equipped to handle. Aside from a meth problem, they didn't have a lot of murder. Even with all of his years on the force, he has never seen anything like this before. He put in a call to the California Bureau of Investigations and asked for help. The CBI assembled a task force that would be dedicated only to these murders, now dubbed The Faceless Murders by the national media. This was a team of criminal profilers, lab techs, technical wizards, and a forensic medical examiner. Now that there were more experienced hands to assist, there is a chance to catch this serial killer before they strike again. Not if, but when... because all the signs point to a killer that isn't quite done yet.

Miguel's parents tried to flee Mexico due to cartel violence when he was 4. No one made it, and they were sent back. One of Miguel's siblings was kidnapped because of a lack of protection fee payment, and he was ultimately killed. It took his father two years to secure a visa to enter the United States. When they finally made it to America, they chose the small-town life - a quiet peaceful place. Here in California, Mexicans were well-received. He joined the United States Army, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan several times, then settled with his father here in Ferndale. He's been Sheriff here for fifteen years.

Sam has never been fully open of where she came from or what her life was like before she joined the CBI. She was young when she passed all of the exams and courses, and seemed to get in by pure luck and determination. What she isn't willing to tell anyone, is why she joined the CBI in the first place, or more so what inspired her. A night out on the town. Too much alcohol. A sped through red light and the sound of glass and metal crunching under the weight of a speeding vehicle. Which was the first thing to take away one of her parents, as later, a home invasion would fully leave her an orphan and forced into the foster-care system. A case that was never properly looked into, nevermind swept under the rug, If the system was going to fail her, she was going to do something about it herself, and she hasn't looked back. But now in recent years with the Faceless Murders springing up, she doesn't know what to think.

With a mother who's an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a father who handles foreign policy for the Central Intelligence Agency, Emelia has some big shoes to fill. She accepted a profiler job with the California Bureau of Investigations after she had been asked to leave training at Quantico. The case in Ferndale has given Emelia reprieve from her family's questioning of what happened. She hopes that solving the Faceless Murders will satisfy her family..

When most people meet Madden for the first time, they are surprised to find a giant nerd behind his gruff exterior. With parents and siblings in and out of jail for most of his childhood, it's surprising Madden was able to go to college at all. Working his way into the California Bureau of Investigations even more so. A single parent to a four-year old daughter, Madden wants nothing more than to be home from this case. Small towns bring back difficult memories, and Madden can only imagine the reaction the town's reaction to the CBI coming in.

As a Chinese American family with traditional values, her parents wanted a different life for her. She was forced to excel in school, take on social activities, volunteer, be a leader. If she wasn't the best in her class, Nancy was punished. She grew up quiet but wanting to desperately socialize. Her path was taking her to become a Doctor, just like her father. She was supposed to take over the family business. Yet, she liked other things. In college, she gravitated toward Forensic Pathology for no reason other than she was simply fascinated by it. Since she has chosen such a poor job and now works for "too low pay", she's been set up to marry richer. She's engaged, begrudgingly, does her job expertly but with a lot of silence.

Yes, Isadora's a little young to be a technical analyst with the CBI. Please stop asking her about it. Having skipped a grade and zipped her way through university, she's a bona fide genius. So what's she doing at the CBI instead of Silicon Valley? To put it bluntly, it's the money. She's clever, sure, but her abrasive attitude and terribly short patience threw her chances at an internship. So the CBI it is. She's rude and temperamental, but she's clever, so what can anyone say?

Quality of post matters over quantity, but I do want people to know that there is an expectation that one can post at least 300 words. Your posts should move the story forward, not just be artsy-fartsy, even though we love our purple prose.
There will be explicit storytelling in this roleplay. There will be EXTREMELY offensive material. No, no one will be calling anyone any racial slurs, but due to the nature of criminal profiling, there may be stereotypes of race, gender, ethnicity, and even sexuality. If you understand this, please post "I understand that there may be upsetting/offensive material" in your reservation. I don't want anyone to be blindsided. Just know that none of these views express those of the players. It is just roleplay and In-Character.
