Bamboo's Story

Bamboo tucked a strand of plain brown hair behind an olive ear, the only sign that she was, as usual, nervous about making first contact. It wasn't exactly the sort of event that went well, especially in an established government. It wasn't the easiest thing out there, but she could deal with it well enough.

Luckily they had agreed to meet at the Terran embassy, which gave Bamboo some advantage. She had a guard disguised as an iguana in a terrarium behind her, and her door was open, inviting. She usually worked form the home world, but had chosen this embassy for it's convenience to both parties. There was no need for either to have too much of an advantage and she held hopes for the Hegemony.

Bamboo allowed herself her small bland smile and saluted back, accepting the handshake with ease. Her salute was a mirror of Liese, careful emulated. It wasn't like the shifter salute, which tended to be more of a toss of the head in most mammalian forms. But she could easily respond in a recognized able way. "Bamboo, Ambassador of the Empress and Traveler. It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Commandant. Thank you for coming." She said with a polite smile. shifters had no last name, unless ennobled. Bamboo, which high ranking, was most certainly not ennobled at all.

"Bamboo took a seat as well. "I see no reason why we would judge you. Why are cultures differ, we are all sentient, are we not?" Not human. Not feline, which was the usual word by a non-Traveler shifter. But Sentient. "Her majesty wishes peace between us. She wished to make you aware of our presence, and asks you to grant Her ships passage through your space." A simple request. They wouldn't be 'colonizing' these people. Most definitely not. The reports had made it clear that they were not a culture compatible with the Erutin culture, or wiht colonization at all.

"But of course, Lord Commandant. We would be sending through your space merchants for trade, should it all be agreeable and always following the proper channels. We would also be sending through colony ships to planets farther out in the galaxy." Or rather ships carrying the transport rings which would allow the colonists to avoid a long and draining travel through space and simply arrive. The technicians were the ones who had to deal with the space travel.

"We are staunch maintainers of neutrality with other nations. It is a policy that has served us for many years."

"Her Majesty will be equally pleased to hear this. We do not often choose to meet with other nations, but His Majesty's nation is too different from our own for us not to at least speak with its people." All true. Too different and difficult to assimilate. This did not reflect in her eyes. "Perhaps we could begin an exchange of information as well. I believe our medical fields may have much to offer." That was safe enough. Medicine required an innate creativity to turn it into a weapon.

"We have many forays into bio technology as well. I believe our doctors may find it refreshing to compare notes." She said with a polite smile. "Though we have long been astounded with many of the technologies of the nations here, we have found much of it to be military based." And slightly below their own according to some of the reports. Bamboo was of the opinion that it was all equally deadly, merely in different ways.

"What sort of needs is it that your nation has that is so pressing, if I may know. I understand if you consider it a bit sensitive, of course." If the other woman was dancing around the cannibalism, then Bamboo wouldn't allow it for long. She had not made contact without adequate, if woefully lacking, intelligence reports from her fellow dimensional Travelers. Thought the reports listed only the bare bones of the society, to her own dismay.

"I see." She meditated on this a moment or so. She would not over their own dead, too numerous to be useful. But she thought this problem over with no disgust at all. Needs must. If it continued to be a need, than that merely signified that they too needed more land than they currently had. "While I am not aware of any products that may assist in this, as I am poorly informed about the possible dangers of cannibalism, I am certain are medical scientists would be able to assist your own, either in the creation of, or refinement of whatever drugs are necessary." The polite smile appeared once more.

"I am glad to hear that they were unable to succeed in their plans. No man should be a slave. It is a practice deeply forbidden in our people. We believe too much in the sanctity of choice."

Not to say there was choice there. It merely felt like it to the common Erutin citizen. That was the key.

The shifter stood with a smile. Her desk had been replaced with a table, after further research had been conducted on the advantages of a table versus a desk. That there were studies in this sort of thing amused herself greatly. She held out her hand to shake in the manner of these people. Ah, she'd be a colonist yet with all the concessions to culture she was learning. "I am glad to see you made it here safely, Lord Commandant. This planet is a dangerous one, we have learned, and very adventurous. I am Bamboo of Erutin." If relations continued so well, she may even be awarded a title of her own. House Grino. That was the possibility.

Then she'd have a last name to tell them. Wouldn't that be something interesting. She took in Redwing's appearance with a smile. "As I understand it, you are Lord Commandant Redwing?" She had word ahead over who her visitor would be this time. The iguana in the terrarium watch closely, though bored, her only guard.

Bamboo smiled at them both. "That's correct. And it's a pleasure to meet you Archduchess Rosalina. Please, let us all take a seat, and we can certainly discuss all we need to." She said with a smile. The woman motioned to the chairs and waited for the others to sit firs,t before taking her seat. "You are the Archduchess of the Aschen Free Sphere, Lady Rosalind? Would that be different from the Aschen Empire?" She asked, looking highly interested in this.

Travelers were little the spies, the diplomats, and the explorers of the Erutin Empire. Knowledge hounds, there was a reason it was difficult to become a Traveler. It took talent, especially to considering there was more than just porting places to their field.

Bamboo raised her eyebrows at this and smiled politely. "I see. Surely you have heard? Her Majesty wishes to remain neutral in the matters of War here. I am certain we are interested in hearing more, but should the matter come to war..."

They weren't going to help out in a war. The expense alone of running a war in another dimension was enough to stop the tight fisted Erutin government from taking action. The logistics were more than a bit hazy, and she was uncertain she even wanted to explain the perils of the idea to the other dignitaries.

Bamboo raised an eyebrow at this, then lowered it and looked slightly amused. She steepled her hands together on the table in front of her and leaned forward, looking interested in this potential. Benefits to her nation, she could certainly understand, "I see. Please, go on. You must understand that even maintaining a presence in the Milky Way is a costly endeavor, so unless there is benefit, my hands are tied."

People were trained often at the state expense, trapping themselves in debt to the state until they were able to pay off their 'loans' for the education. Until the loans were paid off, they weren't allowed to work for any but the state. Unfortunately, that educational policy meant that the government was very tight fisted with their money to make up for that mass expenditure.

"You want us to make things difficult for the other nations involved in the conflict, in other words." She sad simply. "I see." Bamboo say back in her seat and thought this over deliberately. "You have put us in a bind. Her Majesty is upset with the Aschens, for more than one reason." The destruction of one of their colonies, even if it had been unknown. The insult offered when Her Majesty herself attempted diplomacy with the Aschens. They had aimed a massive weapon at her, though her majesty had continued on despite this. She had even come out the other end with a shocked and disbelieving Aschen government. Still. "The United Coalition of Nations has offered us no insult, despite the gross injustices they have caused you. While her Majesty may be inclined to take passive actions against the other parties, I do not believe I could sway her mind on neutrality against UCON."

A visit? Here? His Majesty would never allow Her majesty to set foot on this planet, without a much, much heavier guard than even vaguely diplomatic! Her majesty would no doubt be too encumbered by said guard to deal in her usual underhanded ways. Hm. Well, as Director Hope was prone to saying, His Majesty could suck it. The nation before the comfort of that militarily minded man.

"Perhaps if a suitable location is found elsewhere. I am certain that Her Majesty would enjoy such a visit, given a safer planet to visit on." She said diplomatically. Terra, while largely neutral, now that both the Aschen and UCON forces had evacuated, was too dangerous to risk Her Majesty on. The Heir Apparent was far too young to take over, still being just a babe. An adorable babe, yes. But not even a year old, and incapable yet of speech.

"And it was, perhaps, not entirely unprovoked. Her Majesty was most upset with their diplomatic difficulties, and I believe the word is needled them?" Really, Her Majesty was an odd woman. Revealing their nations, and that they had a colony among the Aschens, only to be a step away of them the entire time. Regardless, the first offense had not been at all Her Majesties fault.

"It is good to see that your people can be so understanding. This galaxy holds...a lot of potential for us, but we must take it slowly. Though we appear largely compatible culture-wise, I fear that the war-like nature of many of the civilizations here may make our colonization efforts in vain."

It was a big galaxy though. Fore runners and scientist had already identified several alien worlds to claim as their own. As the Director of the Colonist had said, it was a galaxy rich in potential, with a cost higher than many should have to pay. "If you do not mind some terraforming, or construction, then there are many suitable planets that lie unclaimed within traveling distance. Our scientists had identified at least fifty already."

And though building an entire planets infrastructure was costly, painful, and ridiculous, Her Majesty had conceded to the need and approved the idea. Plans were already underway.

"We find much the same problem. While Her Majesties scientist have long solved the problem of transporting the material, and manpower is all too ample in out world, it it the time that it takes that makes up judge the possibility of a colony and find it sadly lacking, all too often." Better to sneak into a society and slowly assimilate it into their own. It took some centuries, but through careful planning, a world could be claimed entirely within 100 years. Which only led to the same problem, once more. Room. Even with the recent birth laws put into place, room was scarce.

"Our people express out condolences for your struggle."

Bamboo strolled down Main street, glad to merely be out of that blasted office for once. She had no meetings scheduled for the day and refused to simply stay in the office when she ahd much more interesting things to do. Such as explore this city, and see where the new colony would be. She wanted to see the old UCON space elevator rubble for herself anyway.

Bamboo glanced up, up, and up at Seth, then adjusted her heat, so, while still shorter, it didn't hurt so much to look up. the whole crick in the neck thing she wasn't fond of at all. "Lone and Skrona bless." She replied, curious now. He was tall. He was furry. He had a dog head.

She would not change shape and poke at him as a giant cat. She was too dignified. But it was very tempting.

Bamboo nodded and smiled. "Two of the goddesses of our pantheon. Direct opposites, they govern all, both Light and Dark." She was more than happy to explain her religion to the curious. "Technically, it is Lona and Pharaoi that govern all, but I am a Dark. For me, it will always be Lona and Skrona who are the major goddesses." Lona the creator was major to all. Skrona was a Dark goddess, and her twin, Othugli, was a Light goddess.

"My culture is all about the balance of two. From birth to death, it is a sacred number." She smiled and gave a shallow bow. "I am Bamboo, Ambassador of the Erutin Empire on behave of her Majesty Empress Queen Wing. We too, are new to this sector of space. I would give our our blessing-greeting, but as I understand it twins are a phenomenon in this galaxy." Which was more than a little awkward. She thought a minute and adjust the ritual greeting to fit. "May your joy stay joyous, and your strength abound forever." Adjusted, but close enough.

Bamboo kept up with ease and smiled. "Of that I have no doubt. Her Majesty is always eager to meet members of the international community, and I have no doubt we will reach out to you soon enough." They were reaching out where they could, when they could. She smiled slightly. "As you are not from around here, why don't we walk together. I was going to explore some, and perhaps see the rubble from the space elevator UCON crashed once they evacuated. I am told one of my associates got knocked head over heels, he was close enough."

He had been in the air as a hawk, watching, and deserved it for getting that close, the little fool.

"Oh? We have yet to have talks with the Coalition of Nations. It is our desire too, however, they are in stressed times, and it is difficult to arrange a meeting. "I hope to meet their Commandant soon. Personally, we have only met the Hegemony. An odd group to be sure, but all we desire is trade in this galaxy." And land, but what Empire didn't want more land?

She smiled slightly. "And it was very hard to kill Spiral. I believe he has been in almost as many scrapes as our Director has. And our Director is...purposefully adventurous."

Bamboo was almost excited for this meeting, though it wasn't particularly noticeable. It never was with Bamboo, however. She had the slightest of smiles on her face as she stood, waiting for them to be escorted to the meeting room by her secretary. There was a terrarium in one corner, and in it sat an 'iguana' who was, technically speaking, her guard. She was always careful about that It was best to appear unguarded and peaceful for these meetings, and she knew it. Neutral was their by word.

Bamboo watched the foxlings place each container down and examined them carefully. “It is kind of you to provide such gifts.” She said with a polite smile, more than a little impressed. Gift giving wasn’t something she had seen much of in this political position, but it certainly greased the wheels nicely. Bamboo more than appreciated the gifts.

“I thank you on behalf of Her Imperial Majesty. She will no doubt be more than pleased with such splendid gifts on your ruler’s behalf.” She said, motioning for him to take a seat. The furniture had been adjusted to allow for his height, as had the room itself. He would be comfortable here. “Please, have a seat. Refreshments will be served momentarily. It is a common tradition of our people to do so, and I thought you may appreciate the gesture as well.”

Bamboo tried to wrap her mind around the concept of an elected government, rather than a born one. But how would they know how to rule, if they hadn’t been brought up to rule? And who would elect them? Certainly not the common citizen, naive as they were of how the government worked. All positions in her government, even the position of nobility, was given through merit, except for her Majesties, and even that was merit based in a way. Survival among hundreds all vying for the same single position was certainly a way of ensuring only the most worthy won the throne.

“Then Her Imperial Majesty thanks your governing council. Forgive me of my error, please.” She said and took a seat. There was a light knock as a sweet faced shifter wheeled in a ‘light’ meal of stuffed pidgeon, some mixed vegetables native to Seth’s planet, and a bowl of communal fruit, for him to choose from. A light wine was included, and the shifter demurely served Seth first, as guest.

"Nothing would please me more." She said with a smile, as she cut into her pigeon. “We are a people whom believe in getting straight to the point, so I hope I won’t offend. But what is it your council wishes to gain from our trade alliance.” She said peacefully. “We bring advanced medical technology to the table, and agricultural techniques that can easily multiply your crops one hundred fold, even in unsuitable soil.” Food, oft over looked, was a powerful motivator.

“There are other minor things of course, but those are our main offerings.”
