Public History

Born out of wedlock to one of Miles Hagan's many lovers, Dominic was raised by his mother, Lia Tharow, for most of his childhood. At age eight, he watched Ha'la'tha assassins gun her down in broad daylight on account of an ongoing feud between the Guatrau and his father. Traumatized by the event, Dominic lived with Miles and his half-sister Julia for a short while, scorning his responsibilities and neglecting the affections of his family and peers. At age thirteen he abandoned them, travelling abroad to study and educate himself on various planets throughout the Multiverse. He spent the next thirteen years adventuring across the galaxy, attending various intergalactic schools and drowning his troubles with parties and liquor.

Despite the debaucherous nature of his travels, Dominic did not completely spurn his academics. A gifted scholar, the young Hagan studied at a myriad of different universities across the galaxy. Although his adventures were not closely documented, media coverage suggest that he first resumed his education at the Imperial Academy on Niihama. There he earned a minor degree in economics and galactic history. He also studied martial arts under the Tsuki Hana dojo, and nearly achieved the rank of Senpai before he was expunged for 'dishonorable conduct'. The specifics of his expulsion are vague.

After Niihama, Dominic traveled to Terra and began studying at Harvard and Academia Everia; business at the former... chemistry, physics and arcane theory at the latter. Despite his natural Aschen inability to use magic, Dominic did well at Everia, learning much of the natural and mystic sciences alike. His combative abilities were also tested at Everia where was trained in a variety of martial skills and weapons in accordance with the academy's curriculum.

Upon receiving his degrees at Harvard and Everia, Dominic dropped the academy and focused solely on Harvard, looking to earn his intergalactic law degree as quickly as possible. He was in his second year when he was expelled over a serious on-campus fight that resulted in the hospitalization of four other students. A mandated search of his on-campus apartment conducted after his reprehension revealed a stockpile of drugs and booze stashed away in his rooms. Only twenty at the time, Dominic escaped incarceration through a series of discrete bribes and a generous donation to the college's funds.

Being expelled from Harvard seemed to change Dominic. He took a two year hiatus, during which time his activities and whereabouts are completely unrecorded. Only his best friend and former schoolmate in Everie, Ivan Viggo, accompanied him during this time. Wherever he went, he returned again to Terra, only for a year, where he studied briefly at the renown Volarian Arts Guild. He learned much about crafting and engineering, though he received no formal degree. After this, he left Terra and made for Coalition space. He resumed his studies of intergalactic law at the university of West Biko on Akorant and graduated at the age of twenty-six.

His studies complete, Dominic returned to Langara with Ivan, seeking to reconcile with his father and make a name for himself. Miles, weary of his responsibilities to Tech Con and eager to retire, recognized the change in Dominic and handed the company over to his son. Now the leader of the one of the most powerful corporate giants in the Multiverse, Dominic is eager to extend his company's influence to the far reaches of the Multiverse and bring the Confederacy into a new golden age of prosperity. With a slew of successful business endeavors already under his belt, the young Hagan seems set out to win. Young, ambitious and rich... what CAN'T Dominic Hagan accomplish?

Whisper walked the long halls of the Government Center, the sounds of gunfire echoing as the bodies hit the floor. So many bodies, so many lives snuffed out in an instant. She could feel them all, each and every last breath they took, the fear that clutched their hearts in its icy grip before death overtook them.

It was an image that haunted her every night, an image she could not forget.

She stirred restlessly in her sleep, her brow furrowed in distress at the turmoil of emotions that assaulted her mind until she at last jolted awake, skin slick with sweat. Nausea rolled through the pit of her stomach and she threw the covers back, rushing into the other room where she vomited into the bathroom sink.

Wiping at her mouth she turned the water on, splashing cold water over her face to try and chase the lingering dream from her mind, but even awake she could not be rid of the guilt that gripped her. Reaching up she opened the cupboard over top of the sink, reaching for the small bottle she knew to be there. Popping it open, she disregarded the dosage label, downing three of the pills it contained.

Tossing the empty bottle to the side, it joined the growing pile of empty antidepressant bottles. Running both hands through her hair, she sank to the floor and leaned back against the cool tile wall with a shaky sigh.

It had been a month now since the massacre on Terra, a month since her return to Langara and still the dreams had not abated. She had been provided a house, free run of Caprica City, even a reasonably paycheck - a fact that Whisper held no shortage of resentment for - but none of it could make her forget what she had done for Mollem.

Had it been worth it?

"Is he coming?"

"I think I see his transport..."

"There it is!"

"You mean the Aveon Mark III coming out of the right airlane?"

"Great Hera! He certainly knows how to arrive in style..."

The various Caprican reporters and paparazzi were quickly evoked into a clamoring frenzy as a lavish, sleek-looking transport hovered up to a docking pad. The crowd quickly swarmed up to the ship, several Tech Con muscle men struggling to keep them back, barricading them against the railing. They were on the very top of a Tech Con research center: an enormous 109-story glass skyscraper. Near the edge of the pad, a Caprican news team began rolling, a young Aschen reporter addressing the cameraman.

"Good afternoon Caprica," she smiled, the mobs still braying behind her, "we're here live on the docking pad of the Tech Con Research and Development Center, where every media station in Langara has gathered to witness the return of perhaps the most famous Aschen prodigal son of all time: Dominic Hagan. The son of legendary cooporate giant, Miles Hagan, Dominic has been away from Imperial space for the last ten years, studying on various planets all over the galaxy. No one has had contact with Hagan since he first left, and the last known interview he ever took part in were when he was merely eight years old, directly following the death of his mother. As you can see, the crowds are in a frenzy, desperately trying to get a glimpse..."

She droned on, her voice collapsing into the white noise of the mobs.

Whisper was standing at the edge of the rooftop, her hands resting upon the railing as she stared out over the city below. Though stared was a matter of perspective, given the pristine white bandages that were bound about her eyes.

The city was what brought her out today, as it did other days. Mollem had seen to her housing arrangements, but the empty building afforded her no peace of mind. But up here, overlooking the city, she could just let it wash over her, the entirety of the city in a tidal wave of human emotion. It had an odd beauty to it, even in this prison.

She was a peculiar looking woman, an oddity within Caprica City, and of all those gathered on the rooftop of Tech Con, she was probably the only one present today that had no interest in the commotion at her back. Despite her small stature, her silvery locks of hair and marked pale complextion left her one to stand out in a crowd, but in a city as vast as Caprica City the features that might have marked her as a foreigner were easily disregarded as cosmetics. Today was no different, especially while Dominic Hagan had the gathered crowd enthralled.

The nearby commotion spiked in intensity as Dominic Hagan exited the transport, a wide smile on his face. He straightened his suit, holding up a peace sign for the masses, before walking forward. Questions assailed him on all sides.

"Mr. Hagan! What do you plan to do now that you're back on-"

"-exactly how far into the Milky Way did you tra-"

"-true you studied as far as Terra and some Scatteran worlds-"

"-have you been doing with your father's money? Who financed your-"

"-mother have anything to do with-"

But Dominic only cruised steadily through them, an easily smile on his lips, his eyes obscured by a pair of thick sunglasses. "Please save all questions for the press conference tonight," he said calmly, "I'll be then happy to sate your curiosity then. Now, if you'll excuse me..." The bodyguards quickly cleared a path, allowing Dom entry through the suffocating mobs. He shuffled through them easily enough, nodding and waiving in turn to each new legion of red-faced reporter. Goodness. He didn't think coming back would incite THIS much of a fuss...

As he muscled his way forward, he briefly caught sight of Whiser. Her general oddity immediately struck the young Aschen. Why was she not a part of the mob? What was she doing up here if not to see him?

"Chanceton," he nodded towards one of his bodyguards, "who is that woman?"

"Sir, we really need to keep moving..."

"Are those BANDAGES over her eyes? Is she alright?"

"Sir, I'm sure whatever is the matter with her, it's under-"

But Dom was already moving towards the girl, his exasperated security quickly following. He approached Whisper more-or-less by himself, his bodyguards managing to keep the hordes of cameras at bay.

"Hey," his brows knit together. He thumbed off his sunglasses. "Are you alright? What are you doing up here?"

Whisper turned towards the sound of Dominic's voice, more out of habit than anything. The bandages about her eyes did a good job of concealing her eyes from him, but a few bits of scar tissue could be seen beneath the edges of the bandages, hinting at what may lay beneath.

Staring blindly somewhere past him, she could feel the press of bodies near at hand, all edging to get closer. Pictures were firing off, voices were yelling for Dominic's attention, others demanding to know who the woman was that he was speaking to. It was all starting to grow rather disorienting for the young empath.

She had lost the rhythm and flow beneath the clamor of voices.

"I like heights," was the only answer she offered him.

As far as heights went, Tech Con dominated the area.

"You like heights," Dom repeated incredulously, "you like standing on top of absurdly large buildings. With a blindfold over your eyes. Surely you realize why this looks suspicious..."

Questions swirled through Hagan's head. Who was this girl? An escaped experiment from his father's lab? She certainly didn't look very healthy. Dominic hoped that she hadn't been planning to jump...

"Why don't you come inside with me?" he offered, "I was just about to have some lunch before I meet my father. I'd love to share it with you." He smiled. "There's a kitchen not a floor down from here. Big windows. Nice view of the city. Good place for someone who likes heights."

Whisper seemed confused by his Dominic's offer as she turned towards him. She hesitated mid motion with one hand on the railing, the other at her side. For a moment it seemed as if she had simply moved to join him before thinking through what it was he had asked. The girl seemed remarkably passive and compliant to his suggestion as she made up her mind and stepped away from the railing, offering her arm to Dominic to help guide her through the crowd.

"It's not the view," she replied distractedly.

She reached a hand up, rubbing at her brow as if she had a headache.

Dominic Hagan placed her hand on his bicep, guiding her steadily away from the railing towards a nearby door. The mobs were in an uproar, but Hagan hardly noticed. In a few moments, they were inside the building, the doors closing and locking behind them.

"I didn't think it was the view," Dominic nodded as they walked down a long, stretching cooridor. "Is it the rush, maybe? The thrill of the imminent danger? Being only a few steps away from a certain death?" He looked over at Whisper curiously. "Or maybe it's the quiet. The solace. Finding a place high enough to where it's detached from the rest of the world. A place where you can be alone with your own thoughts." He shrugged, smiling.

"I always liked heights myself," he continued, "though it was the 'jumping off' part that always thrilled me. I guess you can say I'm sort of an adrenaline junkie."

Whisper followed along quietly, but something in Dominic's words drew a response from the girl. Whatever it was, she turned her head briefly to the side and shielded her face from view behind a few strands of loose hair.

"It's the freedom," she tried to explain. "The thought of stepping out and falling and never stopping."

She shook her head.

"It's not what you think, I'm not suicidal. I just always liked heights."

Despite her objections, there was a certain sense of detachment from the girl. Her body was there, her words were there, but her mind was elsewhere.

"I can relate to that," Dominic nodded, "I've spent the last ten years looking for freedom. Living for myself. Answering to nobody." He drew a long breath. "Truth be told, complete freedom isn't all it cracks up to be. It's fun the first couple of years... but eventually, you want something more. Some friends. A family." He smiled. "I mean, we're humans, aren't we? We can spout all we like about how we crave independence, but ultimately, we need boundaries just as much. People we love that can tell us when we've gone too far. Where we should draw the line." He laughed, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "...people that'll drag us backwards, kicking and screaming, when we don't listen to them." He looked ahead dreamily. "I wish I'd of had someone like that. I was already falling by the time I'd realized I'd gone over the edge. It was too late for me."

He opened a nearby door for her, ushering her in. Succulent smells wafted from inside. "But I'm boring you, I'm certain. Come on. There's delicious food to be eaten."

Whisper seemed about to speak but thought better of it as she closed her mouth once more. The unease in her was palpable as Dominic's words were met with silence.

Sometimes it's just easier to fall than it is to climb.

The brief thought crossed Dominic's mind unbidden, more a feeling than words. Whisper offered no sign as to the source of the strange thought, and it would likely be disregarded as nothing more than a peculiar moment of introspect on his part, however out of place it might have been.

It wasn't until he ushered her inside the room that she spoke again.

"What is this place," she asked.

It seemed a perplexing thing that the blind girl had managed to find her way to the rooftop without knowing the answer to that question, and yet she asked it plainly enough.

"What, is your nose not working either?" he joked, leading her over to a nearby table, "can't you smell that? We're near the kitchens. This is my father's private lounge. When I was a kid, this place was where I'd come for my meals."

Although Whisper couldn't see him, she might be able to sense a burly-looking man walk into the room, a large smile spread over his droll face.

"Dominic! Zeus' beard!"

"Benardo," Hagan smiled, quickly walking over to the man and embracing him, "gods I've missed you." He placed a hand over the chef's protruding gut. "Still as healthy as ever, I see."

"Please. Hardly a pound for every year you were gone," the cook laughed heartily, "it's been too long, child. I can still remember cooking you your mother's favorite glires every second Veneris."

"None of those this afternoon, Ben," Dominic chuckled, "just something sweet and filling for myself and my friend." He nodded towards Whisper. "We're both famished."

A look of concern washed over the chef's face. "...shouldn't you be seeing your father? By Hera, Dom, have you NOT gone to his conference room yet? The entire Tech Con board is waiting for you! Your sister is-"

"Let me worry about that, old friend," Dom shrugged off the chef's fears with an easy grin, "I can't do anything on an empty stomach, can I? Just bring out some food quick as you can."

Benardo nodded. "Alright, Dominic. If you insist." The chef turned back to his kitchen, and Dominic turned back to Whisper.

"Shouldn't be too long now," he smiled, taking a seat opposite her, "I've waited a decade for a classic Benardo dish. I'm not waiting another second."

A short silence passed between them as Dominic situated himself. "I don't suppose you'd be willing to share your name with me?" he asked.

The jovial exchange of pleasantries had about as much affect on Whisper as most of the rest of her brief conversation with Dominic, that is to say not much.

"Whi-" she began before breaking off and hesitating. "Jacquelyn."

She rubbed at her brow again, trying to sooth the headache that seemed ever present these days.

"Did you need something from me?" she asked. The thought that he was simply being sociable had seemingly not occurred to her.

"Just your company," Dominic smiled as pitchers of water were set out before them, "I've spent the last month dodging reporters and journalists. Haven't had a decent conversation in weeks." He poured out two glasses for the both of them, gently guiding Whisper's hand to her own. "...also, I'm only too curious as to what an apparently blind girl was doing on the top of one of the largest skyscrapers in Caprica." He drank sparingly. "Where are you from? You're not a part of Tech Con, I hope?"

"I told you, I just like heights."

She took the cup in both hands and slid it close to rest in front of her, but she didn't drink from it.

"I -" she shook her head. "No. I'm not from around here."

Dominic Hagan stood ambivalently outside Miles' office, his hands entrenched the pockets of his suit jacket. He looked up at the massive door before him as if it were a daunting giant to be slain. In a way, it was. Walking into this room was going to be a challenge. After ten years of leave... ten years of pointedly ignoring his family and neglecting his responsibilities, Dominic was back and about to confront the very man he'd run away from. He wasn't sure what to expect right about now. What would his father say? How would he treat his prodigal son? His return to Caprica had been all over the news last week... surely he'd had some time to think it over.

Dominic sighed, straightening his tie and smoothing over his hair. No more uncertainty. It was time to resolve the past.

He knocked three times on the door before he entered, closing the door behind him.

"...hey dad."

"Dad..." Dominic stepped forward tentatively, "...look, just here me out? Please?" His stomach lurched. Miles wasn't even looking him in the eye.

"I know," he began slowly, "you must be angry seeing me here, like this. Any father would if their son abandoned them for a decade. I was hurt and psychologically destroyed by my mother's death, but that doesn't excuse what I did. I left you. I left Julia. I left my home. I shirked my responsibilities and wasted a fortune. I deserted my family and betrayed their love and support with arrogance." A deep, lingering pause. "And for that, I am sorry."

Dom drew a thoughtful breath. "I thought getting away would help me reconcile with the pain of mom's murder, but all I was really trying to do was bury it. No amount of liquor, parties, education or intergalactic adventure could help me cope with what happened to me some fifteen years ago. I know that now. I've seen the truth. Believe or not, I LEARNED something out there." He nodded adamantly. "That's why I'm here. I've come back because I want to make things right. I want to start fresh with the company and with my family. I want to work hard for what I earn and make you proud."

He shrugged. "All in all, I just want to be your son again."

"All I want is a chance to prove myself," Dominic nodded, bearing his father's venomous quips with humble dignity. "I know I haven't been here for the family. Like I said, I'm ready to make it up to you. Start me anywhere. Mail boy. Coffee runner. I'll do it. I'm ready to work hard and do honest labor for my keep. The days of me mooching off the success of the family is over."

He took a step forward. "Just give me a chance, dad. Please. I'm a new man. Let me prove it to you."

Initially, Dom was speechless. His first day back, and already Miles was handing the reigns over to him, just like that? Great Juno. This had escalated far more quickly then he could have imagined...

...but then it donned in Dom. "I'm going to buy an island somewhere in the Aries Ocean, build a mansion, and live out my days stress free." ... "It's your problem now, I'm washing my hands of this."

Miles wasn't doing any sort of favor for his son. He was unloading a burden. Hagan didn't want anything to do with Tech Con anymore. So be it. If running the entire company was what it took to win back his father's respect, Dominic would do it.

"I won't fail you," he said firmly, "but what about Julia? Is she going to be with me on this?"

Dominic Hagan turned to Miles as he prepared to take his leave.

"That won't be necessary," he assured his father, "I know what I'm doing here. For all my reckless partying, I DID do quite a bit of studying around the Multiverse. As I'm sure you gathered from the news, I have several degrees from ranking schools in the Milky Way. I even nabbed a few with the Taiyou before our diplomacy got shot to hell." He smiled.

Dominic looked back to the desk; the papers lining the wood, the chair waiting to be filled. He looked towards his father; crippled with age and wounds, just trying to live the remainder of his life in peace.

"Dad I uh..." he called out, stumbling with his words for the first time since he walked in. His tone was quiet and uncertain. "...I love you. I know that's hard to believe but. Yeah. I do."

Dominic Hagan smiled, drawing a deep breath as the Miles closed to the door to office... to HIS office. He turned towards the chair, running his hands along the dark wood of the desk before planting himself in the seat. For a moment, he was silent, glaring at the various papers and files as if they were old friends.

He nodded once.

"Alright. Time to get to work."
