What was once a defensive construct left behind by a fallen empire rose to intelligence and now dedicates itself to the defense of Mankind in the name of the Living Emperor.

Description

Ductu is a rider that wanders along in the guise of other creatures. Myrkul dispatches them to understand things which are foreign and not human. She adds her intellect and thereby her goals to the creature and can speak in many languages producing the structures necessary to do so. While becoming a greater whole Ductu nonetheless holds the strings of the bonded creature's goals. While she has a distaste for bonding with sapient creatures she abjectly refuses to subvert the will of humans. She is likely to undo hostile psychic efforts against the host creature to effect escape. Weaving into the creature's body it becomes larger and more hardy and in the night or shadow one can see the faint crimson crown of Ductu's mental defenses above the creature's head.

Gender: Female
Race: Ascended hairworm
Age: Not applicable
Height (personified): 5'8"
Theme: Link
Description

Ductu can be somewhat androgynous when personified if going about her business alone but when engaged with other sapients she takes on much more feminine features. Her smooth face hints at some well designed symmetry hidden just underneath and defined enough for a warm smile. Her fingers shorten to lithe attractive hands if she needs to interact with substances. When interacting with physical objects her hands take on the smooth cool texture of silken gloves. The rest of her substance feels much like a silt caressing as it moves past. She takes on eyes sometimes which are silver with red irises.
Powers

  • Bond - When Ductu bonds with a creature they gain a supernatural hardiness. As she is woven into their muscles if they sustain any bleeding she can cauterize wounds very quickly. This is stupendously painful when done in large amounts so Ductu prefers to seal wounds with her own substance until the host can rebuild themselves. The host's skin is more robust as the networks of black motes are far more resilient than most flesh. If the host takes too much damage without having time to heal it may prove fatal for Ductu to leave as she may be triaging for a good amount of flesh that hasn't regenerated yet.
  • The Crown - Ductu's will produces the faint red crown above the creature's head seen largely at night as during the day it's too bright. The bonding is vulnerable to psychic attacks which weakens her but Ductu will not leave a bonded animal unless absolutely necessary. The bond allows her to repair hostile efforts against the host mind. While bonded with such a creature its will is very difficult to subvert by others without also breaking Ductu's own first. As long as she is there she is conscious enough to exploit the bond.
  • Personify - If she leaves a bonded animal and personifies Ductu will not easily be damaged holding a wispy solidity unless needing her hands to manipulate objects. Outside the weakness of the bond she will prove heavily resilient against psychic attacks but weak to fire. Touching Ductu's mind is damaging in of itself as it innately reacts with hostility to things attempting to actively bond with her benign or otherwise. She moves very quickly as her claws liquefy and consume what they puncture. Ductu prefers diplomacy for sapient creatures or bonding with everything else than damaging potential hosts however.

Current Host

Unknown female - Darknet handle "Neural Saint"

Ductu found this female with a sucking chest wound from persons she had no capability to identify. She would never take a human by force but neither could she allow a human to perish. So it was she bonded with the girl quickly fading from reality. Ductu reached out and anchored her from falling into the dark of nonexistence by replacing the destroyed flesh with herself. A mind still absent the girl's waking thread still recovers as Ductu's motes tend to the seared neural garden.

So begins...

Ductu's kind were separated from mankind for many years and with the barrier fractured spread out into the mount in genesis and beyond. The curious machines implanted into the human left patina colored eyes staring at the shop. Both under blue hoodie that was once a size too large but now fit far better. After finding the girl and bringing her back from the brink flesh carefully moved aside and enlarged for Ductu to fit. The girl was now quite burly as Ductu tended her muscles from inside. Few of the Fallen Emperor's dicta survived his death but not subverting a human's will was one of them. In conflict between them she chose the human's best option. Part of her objected to her current existence mired in a sea of familiar but half-forgotten terms with a human dreaming too deeply to help. The cloth that was a human mind was seared in places but intact as Ductu carefully dragged the strands back together as they grew.

"Apothecary", was one of the clearly now archaic terms she remembered. It was a lead on the replacement part she needed to get out of the human without breaking dictum. The shop looked like it sold potions and perhaps some of the kind she required.

The waxen red light above her head drowned out in the sun as a slightly too large 18 year old wan-faced girl emerged from a shaded doorway. In her cotton hoodie on the front was bright red spatter and hole filled in by whatever cloth Ductu could find and clean. The shotgun design might be stylish if the crimson 'ink' didn't have the faint twinge of iron smell.

Ductu pushed the door open eyes darting to the noise. None of the attention is paid to the two already there as she methodically inspects every item on a table.

"Hello Laura! My name is Nadya Alexeev and I have been abandoned by my orphanage. It was all a terrible mistake of course, but that's what happens when you accidentally end up in space for a bit without cell phone coverage." She smiled brightly and shook Laura's hand. "You seem very nice. You soap smells pretty too." She complimented, not certain what else to say. Of course, then someone else walked in and by habit the teen looked the person over. She blinked once, then turned to Laura and stepped back, uncertain.

"Did you know you have someone covered in fresh blood in your shop? I say fresh, you see, because only fresh blood is red and smells so heavily." Did she have a weapon? No. No, she did not. Nadya was, as per usual, woefully unarmed. Hopefully June or Laura could so something about it, because Nadya had nothing. This was not an uncommon state. She was only 13 after all, and even in Wing City, no one sold a 13 year old a gun. Still, this was a little off putting. She supposed, if need be, she could reach pretty far back for memories of some offensive spells. Biting her bottom lip, Nadya tried to think of any possible offensive spells she had learned. Or defensive. Or something other than that charm to brush her hair so she didn't have to.

That was all she could recall at the moment. She supposed she could use it on the bloody person, if she needed to. It would definitely be disconcerting at least.

Laura smiled at the girl, "Well thank you Nadya. I imagine that was quite some adventure." She said while she took in the teen's backpack. It was enormous, and obviously crammed with everything the small girl could think of and then some. "Yes, yes I see that now..." Laura murmured, frowning at the shop's newest customer. The blood was one thing, it was the perceived aura that surrounded them; but then again she had never been as good at reading someone's aura as other people she knew. It was a skill that just wasn't ever going to get past the beginner stages, and she was okay with that. Laura knew where her talents lay, content in them for the most part.

"Excuse me, miss? Can I help you?" She asked with some amount of concern as she approached the girl in the cotton hoodie.

Ductu looked over after finding another bottle of aromatic oil. Her hands turned black between the veins to look at the bottle convinced they were barely active things not healing magic. Aura of the human showed a shatter of lines from a human life carefully reassembled then concreted to itself the a noisy blackness holding it together. It was very much the cutting of a thread of fate denied a human now returning from beyond its appointed time. Those able to see such things saw the bright red crown of mind Ductu's sense of perception emanated from. The voice was a teenagers but it lacked the nuance for evasion as all the ascended hairworm were supremely direct.

The eyes were clearly cybernetic the aperture of her eyes flexed to focus on Laura, "Greeting. I need something to repair a broken heart. Do you have something to repair broken pieces?"

Okay, Laura seemed to have this under control. That didn't stop the teen from hiding behind June carefully, and looking to her uncertainly. "All I can remember is the charm I use to brush my hair." She whispered, confessing to it like it was a sin. "If anything happens, I'm gonna run, okay?" She was currently 13, and not armed, and couldn't remember a useful spell at all. But it was clear that she assumed something horrible was going to happen.

Nadya had not had good luck planetside since she had accidentally left Terra. If it wasn't one thing, it was another, and she was always careful to try not to drag Rei into it all, so the smuggler hadn't known how much bad luck Nadya had. There was a reason a guy who loved to fight had followed her around everywhere. Nadya was often at the epicenter of trouble. It was a bit of a gift, or maybe a curse from her Bosses? She didn't know for sure, but she really needed to get armed. Eventually.

June gripped the girl's arm and held her firmly in place. "Don't worry, Laura has this under control." She said calmly. If anything happened she would step in. "And you're going to have to learn to not run Nadya." June added as she watched Laura speaking with the very strange girl in the shop. A quick look at her aura didn't quite make her shudder, but it was most certainly concerning. It wasn't like anything she'd ever seen before, and truth told wasn't sure what to make of it.

"Ah well... broken physically or metaphorically? If we're talking metaphorically, I'd recommend my rose absolute balm with the rosemary and lemon balm bath tonic. Physically... well that's another story altogether." Laura told the girl. A broken heart could be one of two very different things. "Physically.. I'd say consult your doctor, but I'd guess you've already been there done that if you're here." She mused as she headed towards a shelf in the shop. "For a physically broken heart... hawthorne, motherwort, and lemon balm tincture." Laura said as she pulled the small brown bottle of the shelf. "But be careful, especially with the hawthorne. Too much can cause dizziness and nausea."

Ductu pondered the question before responding the red crown turning in place. She rubbed her face black lines scurrying away inside under the flesh, "Physically. We don't remember how to rebuild it. We replaced it but the flesh isn't growing back. Can't the people grow them back or does a doctor grow them back? We remember magus replenish them but we have not seen any. Vulgarities on mankind were dismantled for lethal harm to a human but their parts wouldn't fit."

Words of the fallen emperor swam in her mind all of then foreign now that he was gone. A hue and cry against the other two in the shop that Ductu no longer could discern the meaning of. The patina-colored yes look back at June for a moment her gaze drifted looking June over. Copper gaze moves like a thread blown about with noise under its own power.

"I've learned that one already. I've also learned that I'm an unarmed thirteen year old girl who is definitely underweight, and definitely has no way to defend herself." She pointed out, though she kept close to June all the same. It didn't seem like the other was as dangerous as she looked. Then the words his and she paled rather handily.

This was Wing City. The impossible was possible. That meant that there was a pretty good chance that this stranger was being very literal about having replaced her heart, and from the sounds of it, it wasn't via heart surgery. And June wanted her to stay still for this? Really? Quietly, Nadya muttered to herself. "I am so buying a gun." It would be illegal, given that she wasn't old enough, but it was pretty clear that she definitely needed a gun, or some form of self defense at least.

Laura took a deep breath and carefully considered her next words. "Okay physically.. that's a bit tougher to do..." She said slowly as she considered the various means and methods of fixing the broken heart. Laura knew well enough that this was a magic issue that may have been out of her scope of experience, but on the other hand the girl didn't seem to be going away and was quite demanding. "Uhh... let's see here... your asking for some pretty big magic." Patching together a heart wasn't something she'd ever done, and she wasn't confident she could be of any assistance.

Looking across the shop at June imploringly, she hoped that the Councilor could be of some assistance, somehow.

"As you should be. A thirteen year old girl has no need of a gun." June said. There was no way in hell she was going to let that kid have a gun, there were too many issues and things that could go wrong.

Ductu gathered her thoughts welding them together in the host's absent midsection. It composed her away from the seared garden of gray threads and ordered her mind. The girl closed her eyes and looked away from June a bit of color returning to the pallid skin but ordered networks of black veins remained at the base of her neck. Being too near a throne of mind distorted her self image and left passing thoughts jumbled so overwrought just to reach each other.

The girl's voice mixed with one more controlled and managed a smile rather than her slacked expression, "I'm sorry, miss? I am laden; The mind disperses my thoughts. We are not written for this contradiction of Dicta that pulls us apart. We can persevere and will... refrain... from trying to repair her for now. We cannot disbond a human in this condition."

She pulls the hoodie just below the collarbone showing the very top of silty dune-skin and thin threads of human skin. Both occupy a hole ripped down her chest where a heart should be. Instead her heartbeat lacked entirely with Ductu quietly impulsing joined tubes of herself to push the red fluid about.

She looks down realizing equivalent exchange was needed for such a thing as she'd asked for, "The Jinhai could not yet enable me to bring resources across the Way. I think the host has nothing. We can only pay in labor befit the Fallen Emperor's bloodshed borrowers. We know nothing of this world otherwise."

"Yeah okay, you have a giant hole in your chest." Definitely some kind of zombie. She looked up to June. "See. This is why I need a gun. Zombies. They walk among us." Still, apparently she needed help and Nadya looked at it curiously. This was probably bad for her development mentally or something. Then again, that was probably part of living in Wing City. She eyed the cavity curiously. "Seriously, how is the blood even moving. This is not normal."

Oh yeah. Wing City. "Have you tried 3D printing a replacement?" That could work, right? It would be plastic though, so maybe now. She wasn't sure. But hadn't there been some kind of news article. "I'm sure that would work for a zombie." Did they even need a flesh heart? Probably not.

"NADYA!" June said sharply as she glared at the girl. She had forgotten how rude a thirteen year old could be, especially one so used to living largely on their own with no adult to discipline them. Sighing she looked over at the zombie as Nadya had called it, and frowned seeing that Laura was struggling. "What she means to say is that sort of exchange isn't possible here or for her." June said as she approached the pair, having left Laura strict instructions to stay put.

"Uhh okay.. you don't make much sense Miss.. but I don't think I can help you." Laura stammered wholly confused by what this girl wanted.

Ductu looked at Nadya squinting, "We cannot bond with nonlife or replace parts of life with it without consent of the Emperor. It is against His Dicta. The Emperor is fallen so a printing of nonlife cannot be."

Eyebrows raised darting between June and Laura, "She already replaced her eyes with nonlife but we do not think she is against Dicta. I sealed the hole to keep her atop the throne of mind. We pump her blood for her and keep the grey garden from atrophy while she recovers."

Genuine fear cracked her voice at the thought of breaking a Dictum, "If she wakes we will be in violation of Dicta. We must not. I need a suitable replacement. Perhaps you know of other options?"

Another option brightens her eyes that humans could terminate other humans without due cause. She clasps her hands," Will you or the acolyte terminate other humans for violations? If we cannot get the host's heart recreated I could inspect the bodies for spare parts."

"There's this legend, on the streets, of someone called The Little Butcher. Maybe him." She said, and tried to work her way through what the other said. "Um. Otherwise, you probably want a hospital. They have a morgue." She offered the other, uncertain. "I mean, they might give a zombie a heart." Weird zombie.

Still, it was pretty clear that she was supposed to stay put, so she stayed right there. That did not, of course, stop her from commentary. She considered things carefully. "Course. the morgue is full of dead hearts, not living ones. But maybe you can be put on an organ transplant list?" Was she an acolyte? She thought the other called her an acolyte.

"No, no no. We are not going to look for "The Little Butcher", it is out of the question!" June said crossing her arms and shaking her head. That was the last thing she wanted to be doing and would likely never hear the end of it from Kasimir about how she'd allowed a thirteen year old girl and a zombie to drag her across the city in search of some urban legend. "He doesn't exist, so put those thoughts out of your mind right now." She said pointedly hissing at the young teen in fury. This was getting crazier by the second, and June was slowly loosing her carefully cultivated cool.

"Terminate? Kill if necessary? Yes." June answered plainly her attention now back on Ductu. "But... I suppose if one were able to acquire the right parts, and I'm not saying this is possible... that reanimation magic could be used.. With caution though! Oh.. but then there's the threefold law... and negotiating with the veil.." Laura began to muse, quickly finding herself bogged down in trying to figure out how to make this work. "No Laura, both you and I know that reaching beyond the boundaries of life are not permitted." June said shaking her head.

Ductu tilts her head at the two the host wasn't yet nonlife, "We bridge the torn tether to the host spirit the host can not pass as long as the body lives."

She raised an index finger a small dot of black at the tip welled up a bright red dot of living blood, "I balance the damaged seat of the spirit in her absence but require a replacement for the living parts humans don't grow back. The heart, valves, and the sac it is contained in were destroyed we do not know what its design was. Bone and flesh can be cultivated. we mirrored the other half of the chest."

The blood drained back into her fingertip as Ductu scoured it of nonhuman life, "I can handle rebuilding the throne of the human mind without any unnecessary connection to nonhuman control and seating her upon it. Is your veil the non-human light that keeps trying to interfere? The throne is almost complete we have shut the light out. She will wake eventually but I can't rebuild the broken parts of a human body. I need help with that part to return her to life. Bonding to a human mind capable of taking actions it is forbidden by Dicta, the Fallen Emperor's law."

Her voice softens into something far less rote with a flourish of a hand, "Like, unless you can ask the host soul and stuff. Dicta says I got to maintain the life of mankind by any means necessary."

"He's just a ghost story. It's not like he's...real. He's real isn't he? Oh man! I want to go find him! I bet Bo and I totally could find him too!" Bonadya had a mystery to solve! That was going to be so cool. She beamed happily, pleased with a new mystery. She just needed to get a new bike, and find Bo. They could have so much fun!

Ductu was kind of weird though, and Nadya looked her over carefully. "You just need a part right? Like a map? If it's not alive, if it's recently dead, do you think you'd be fine?" That was key. Could they do this without killing someone by stealing their heart. "Most...most humans won't like it, if you kill someone just so they can have a replacement part." She explained, careful. "It's not polite." At all. Not that Nadya was terribly polite, but she could say please and thank you and didn't go around as a big bully, which was what really mattered.

June just stood there shaking her head, this wasn't working. "Do you ever shut up?!" She asked in annoyance as Nadya continued to blabber on about bikes, someone named Bo, and maps. "I swear by Zeus's name that if you keep this up, I'll send you back to the Fates early." June muttered. How could such a young girl, do so well at provoking her anger? She almost feared what sort of trouble the girl could stir up if set loose on a bike.

"A map! If someone showed you a picture.. do you think you repair yourself that way?" Laura asked mostly ignoring the squabbling between June and Nadya. "I mean.. we've got the internet and all.. I could probably get you a picture that way?" She continued to ask. Mostly she just wanted this over and done with, so she could go back to selling things to little old ladies, their friends, and stupid college kids.

Her voice dry again Ductu commented at Nadya, "Myths are sometimes true. We will write this 'Little Butcher' in the book of Myrkul when we return so none after us can forget to look for him. I understand what you mean for your Dicta I think. While I am not allowed to kill humans without permission can I use them if someone else does? "

Eyes on the ceiling for a moment she considered their idea. With the plan of a heart she could figure out how a living one worked enough to build it. She could always keep pumping for the host if it didn't work.

Patina eyes warmed again as Ductu smiled through living face tattoos at Laura, "Yeah, I think I could make one! You got net access? Stellar! Given time to figure out how to build it and a place for the body to eat I can fix her. It's, like, hard without one that's still beating, tho'. I can pay you or someone in service if you want."

Nadya fell silent and pouted heavily, the crossed her arms and looked away from June, so that it was very clear who it was that had upset her so. With a heavy sigh, she began to wander the shop. Crazy zombie lady was largely harmless, which was pretty good for this city. With a smile she admired some of the more unusual soap shapes. It didn't take her long to find rubber ducks, which caused a burst of laughter.

She giggled and quacked to herself, amused. This was better than she had expected. Wait, she was supposed to be quiet now. With a huff, she fell silent again, not happy that she had been asked to stay quiet.

Seeing Nadya kept busy by the rubber ducky in the shop, June sighed and turned to Ductu. "The little butcher is dead. He no longer exists." She said shaking her head. "Even if he were alive still, I'm not certain he would have helped." Even during his brief life, he had remained elusive, and then there was the whole issue of what had happened after. Sure, some myths had been true but it was the choice of humanity to ignore this as time went on.

"Oh no payment is necessary." Laura said quickly as she reached behind the counter and grabbed a slim tablet. Fingers dancing across the screen, she pulled up what she thought was needed and then handed the device over. "Here try this." She said.

Ductu accepted the tablet gladly then tilted her head at June, "It is our intent to be exhaustively thorough. We will look regardless to identify any nonhuman support structures. Now that we have relocated mankind all spiritually detrimental nonhuman influences will be hunted down and and their planes drained of existence."

Warmth on her face drains to hold up a moving monochrome tattoo on her hand of the Fallen Emperor's last dictum written on on her palm. Just interacting with the image drained some of her free will. Netheril's coat of arms sporting scrolls that say 'In aeternum Humanitas'.

The tattoo casting winter onto her face gave way to spring as a smile returned to June. A now free hand threw a glow as Ductu tried to get access to an etheric interface. It didn't seem to exist a physical interface of humans?

She comments idly at the picture from an anatomy guide, "The tablet has a mundane human interface? How do I move the images?"

A city accent emerged, "It's like I'm trying to build a habitation from outside. I can, like, do it eventually. I need access to this 'cuz it will take a while. Someone's getting paid back even if you don't want my debt. We must not diminish human resources."

Nadya watched all of this and then rolled her eyes. This was weird and ridiculous and she was bored senseless. Working with Rei may have taught her how to keep her mouth shut and to butt out of things, but this? Urgh. Nadya sighed and found a corner of the shop to take a seat in on the floor. It's not like there was anything else for her to do.

Great. Now she had time to think about it. She had been abandoned hadn't she? Well. It wasn't too surprising. This Laura lady probably would do the same at some point. Nadya pulled her legs up to her chest and lowered her head to her knees. Wing City Orphan. That was her fate here. Her bosses sucked.

By this time Laura was anxious to be rid of her guest and it's strange ways. "Just... tap it with your finger." Laura said looking towards the door of the shop, hoping that this didn't get crazier. "If.. that doesn't work. I think there's a cyber cafe just down the way.." She added helpfully. This was getting even more ridiculous by the moment. Laura seriously doubted her ability to help whatever this thing was, as it was outside the scope of her experience. She dabbled in small time magics, and none of it was really designed to make even the smallest blip on the proverbial radar of most of the unseen.
