Eliza Carroll's Story

A small ship docked at the spaceport, lowering itself to the ground with a torrent of hums and steaming. The ship was distinctly Victorian, with a lot of bronze colors and gears and whimsical designs.

Within the ship were six people: Eliza Carroll, her sister Cassandra Carroll, their two servants, the pilot, and a co-pilot. Eliza and her servants quickly made their departure from the ship with a large stack of luggage.

Eliza was a charming young lady. She was mixed, with her large eyes almond-shaped and slanted, her nose pert, and her lips full. Her skin was just a light tan, and she never burned. Her hair was a rich brown and curly, but never oily. She reached to barley five four, and had a very slim figure. On her head were a pair of goggles, just like her father often wore. Brass and gold. She was clad in a dainty little dress that flared out at the waist with many layered skirts. Under that, she had white stockings, and on her feet were modest black flats.

She ran into the spaceport with her servants, who were both white-haired with very bland blue uniforms on, carried her luggage. They were both a bit younger than herself, with blank expressions. They were but dogs.

Cassandra Caroll followed after Eliza wearing a small frown. She still did not agree with her mother. So what if her dumb uncles had done something stupid? Why did she have to leave Pramia to come to Terra of all places? It was aggravating, having to play babysitter for the rest of her family just because her mother wanted to use her as some sort of spy.

Nonsense. Just nonsense.

Never mind the fact she absolutely loathed almost the entirety of her mother's side of the family, she truly despised planets like Terra. Such a ridiculous place with nothing but...chaos in every direction. She would admit she was far from the refined woman her mother wanted her to pretend to be, but even she knew that Terra was just....out of hand.

Still, despite all her arguments, she was still here and there wasn't much she could do about that.

"Guess I might as well try to enjoy this...." she grumbled as she trudged after Eliza, glaring at any who dared to glance at her.

Eliza spun around on her heel, pouting towards her cousin. "Why don't you smile a little more, Cassandra?" she complained, hands on her hips. "We got to come all the way over here and explore a new world! Why aren't you thankful? Plus, we get to see Uncle Ernest! And Auntie Nora and our cousins!" She smiled and spun around. "Oh. And daddy, too, I guess."

She did not skip into the port, but she had a slight hop to her step. For a twenty-something, she was filled with energy. Fawn and Colby walked alongside Cassandra.

"It has been a while since Miss Eliza has been this happy," Colby droned.

"It has been a while, too, since Miss Cassandra has been this miserable," Fawn chirped.

"You both don't get paid enough to kiss this much ass...." mumbled Cass as she walked alongside the servants.

Meanwhile, at arrivals Ernest and Kyle Carroll waited for the young women from Pramia.

"Why are we here again?" Kyle droned leaning against a pillar with both arms crossed across his chest. He watched the other passerbys with moderate interest. While the denizens of this planet seemed, for the most part, culturally barren when compared to back home in Abingdol, they did possess some interesting technology that piqued Kyle's curiosity.

"Dear boy, we are here to fetch your cousins Eliza and Cassandra, did I not already tell you?" Ernest smiled, standing with his back straight, hand resting gently atop what most would consider the most lethal cane in the world. "Granted you've never met little Cassie, certainly you remember Eliza."

"That's not what I meant...I meant why are we the one's picking up your brother's children instead of him?" Kyle sighed.

"Why? He's off escorting your mother and sister around the city." Ernest replied simply.

"and why is he doing that instead of you?" Kyle asked. "And she's not my mother." He mumbled the last words quietly to himself, best not to start the routine argument here in a public place.

"I'm afraid I don't understand you dear boy." Ernest sighed, shaking his head. "You ask too many questions. Ah! there they are, come now let's not keep them waiting." Wearing a huge smile, Ernest walked off to greet the girls while Kyle lingered for a few moments.

"Idiot." The younger man sighed before following.

"We don't get paid at all, really," said Fawn. "But we get to stay in a warm house and get three meals a day if we do not misbehave."

When Eliza saw the two men, the woman threw her arms up into the air and jogged over to them, yelling, "UNCLE EEEEEEEEEEEERNEST!" as she did. She would jump and throw her arms around his neck. "I'm so happy to see you! I missed you so much!" A big wet smooch would land on his cheek.

Once out of his arms, she would turn to Kyle, hands gloved in silk coming up to cup his face. "Ohhh, look at you, Kyle! So grown up now! It's been a little while, hasn't it?" She rose up on her toes to kiss him right on the eye.

She then lashed around. "CASSANDRAAAAAAA! Come on!"

Ernest let out a hearty laugh as he spun his niece around, holding her entire weight with just one of his huge arms.

"Little Lizzy" He smiled. "I'm glad to see you in such high spirits. I take it the journey here to Terra went well? Everyone knows space travel gets a bit exhausting." He glanced over his shoulder at Kyle as Eliza went to greet him.

Kyle's greeting was a little less warm, a small feigned smile and letting her kiss him hello.

Cassandra begrudgingly followed after Eliza. "Hey Uncle Ernest." She said flatly with a wave. As Kyle walked up to Ernest's side, Cass paused curiously. She'd never seen this boy before, was he also in her family?

"I had Cassandra to keep me company, and where she couldn't, I had Fawn and Colby! What better company could I ask for but you, uncle?" Eliza chimed. She held her hand out toward Kyle.

"Cassandra, this is Kyle, one of our cousins. Kyle, this is Cassandra. I'm not quite sure how closely related you two are..." She tapped her chin, but did not think on it long. "Well! Auntie Nora will know. How about we go to town? I'm impatient!"

She reached for Kyle's and Ernest's hands and began to drag them off. Fawn and Colby sighed as they followed behind Cassandra.

An bronze and silver carriage pulled up in front of Epilogue books. It was drawn by horses, but not by any Thoroughbred or Clydesdale. The horses were mechanical, with the same whimsical design as the spaceship that had landed just an hour before that held several visitors from Pramia. The knees of the horses used mud-splattered cogs and their metal hooves clanked as they clopped along the street.

The door to the fine carriage opened, and a woman in a dainty little blue dress flew out of the vehicle and sped toward the store. She paused when she heard a call at the carriage, and impatiently beckoned.

Leela's father and two young white-headed servants came out after her, toward the store.

Ernest walked towards the store with strong strides, a steady and audible thump was heard every time the bottom of his cane struck the ground.

"Do slow down dear niece. There's no need to rush about." He smiled, a cigar burning between his fingers. "I'm sure the books aren't going anywhere anytime soon."

Ernest then turned to one of the servants. "Would you be so kind as to watch the carriage? We've yet to be here even a handful of minutes and already it has drawn quite a few worrisome looks."

"Oh, but Uncle Ernest, how could anyone not be excited to see dear Aunty Nora?" she exclaimed, hand grasping over the handle of the store. The door was pulled open, and Eliza scurried inside.

"Yes, Master Ernest," said Colby, giving the man a short bow as he stood by the carriage, a pistol on his hip.

Fawn walked up to the door ahead of Ernest and held the door open for him. "The young Miss is hasty today. We apologize."

Having chosen that moment to approach the door and greet the young lady, Phil was standing almost directly behind it when Eliza scurried into the shop and right into him. He fell to the ground with a quiet "oomph," then grinned, holding her and chuckling. "I'm beginning to sense a theme, here. Leela introduced herself in much the same way."

Still smiling, spectacles askew, he held out his hand so she could use it to steady herself and stand.

Eliza looked up at him after she'd fallen, first with an addled gape, which quickly turned into a wide, open-mouthed smile. "Well, people do say we share some mannerisms, but I'm far lovelier, don't you think?" she snickered, placing her hand in his own with her other on her cheek. "Eliza Carroll. I'm looking for Nora. I heard she was here?"

Someone cleared their throat loudly behind Phil. Garrett was standing right there, arms crossed, mouth turned into a great frown. Fawn, who stood with the door open, looked between Ernest, Garrett, and Eliza.

Philius got to his feet with the sort of surprising agility that a gentleman, properly marshaled by a calm manner, can summon when trying to look cool in front of a girl he fancies. Holding out his hand for introductions this time, he grinned cannily, oblivious to Garrett's reaction. "While I have no wish to disparage Miss Leela, I can say with no small amount of certainty that you are the loveliest young lady I have encountered in some time. Professor Wolfinson. Erm, Philius. Missus Carroll is just across the room."

Ernest watched the scene unfold silently, holding his tongue as he smoked on his cigar. His brow cocked curiously as he watched this unknown man speak of his very own daughter in such a way. What the large gentleman thought about this book keeper went unsaid. Instead Ernest looked up to his brother, who had no such patience for tomfoolery.

"Garret. Do greet your daughter and give the proprietor of this shop my regards while I see to my wife." Ernest said slowly after thumping his cane against the ground. With a nod to his brother, Ernest started to walk further into the bookstore.

Shortly after Ernest had come though the door and Eliza had bumped into Phil, Nora got up from her seat and rushed over. "Eliza! Dear, how was the trip? I missed you!"

"Auntie Nora!" replied Eliza in an excited squeal. The two women exchanged hugs and kissed one another upon the cheek. "I'm so happy to see you! And is that...daddy!" She scuttled past Phil to embrace her father, who grinned at Phil.

That's right. Father.

"Oh, and look who it is!" Nora strode toward the red-headed man, leaning forward on her toes to peck him on his lips. "So happy to know you could come, honey. This is Mister Wolfinson!" She gestured her hand toward the bookstore owner. "He's that wonderful man I was chatting to you about last night. Mister Wolfinson, this is my husband, Ernest Carroll, and you seemed to of met my niece."

Fawn stood on the side of the door behind Ernest, watching silently.

Sizing up Ernest, Phil straightened his posture, effortlessly accessing his boarding school training. This was a nobleman, and the head of the Carroll clan. His father had taught him never to bow his head, for if the Wolfinsons were not noble by title, they were noble of spirit... and of resources. Mr. Carroll had no way of knowing this, but that made no difference.

He paid Ernest due deference with his manner, but his bearing, enunciation, speech pattern, and the sharp, clipped edge to his voice would tell any man of noble birth that he was in the presence of a peer. That was, after all, part of the reason mama and papa Wolfinson had indulged Phil’s request to attend boarding school in Granpaix.

“A pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir. Professor Philius Percival Wolfinson IV of the Luxland Wolfinsons, heir to Wolfinson Industries and senior council member of The Granpaix University of Luxland.”

This was the first Nora or Garrett had heard of this.

"A pleasure, Proffessor Wolfinson." Ernest smiled, extending a hand for the lithe man to take in his. "I can not say I possess much knowledge about Luxland or the Wolfinson family, but it seems as though you have been raised by an honorable family. But I must say I am much more impressed by what my splendid wife tells me of you. I must extend my gratitude for your taking such good care of her. It is no wonder why your business here has been able to survive in such a....modern city."

He shook the hand firmly, smiling a genuine smile at Ernest's words and giving a slight bow. "Very kind of you, Mr. Carroll." Philius, relieved at this positive turn of events, turned his attention to the other assorted Carrolls in the room, trying to hide his curiosity at their reaction to both his revelation regarding his nature and of his positive impression on Ernest. He was careful not to look at any one person directly, but to take in the scene a a whole.

Nora's smile grew wide. "Well, well, Mister Wolfinson! I didn't know you were such an influential figure here on Terra! That's quite delightful, to know who's company we're in. I can't say I'm surprised, though! It only makes sense that you are so well spoken and mannered."

Eliza seemed to swoon. "Is that true? That means you've got some good blood in you!"

Garrett's jaw dropped a moment, but he clopped it shut before Phil turned around to look at him. He hooked his fingers into his vest and cleared his throat, giving Phil a dry smile. "Yes, yes. Very...impressive," he mumbled. He put a hand on Eliza's shoulder and drew her back toward him.

Philius couldn’t maintain a full edge of stoicism under Nora’s barrage of infectious enthusiasm, and smiled at her, giving another slight bow. “You are too kind, Mrs. Carroll.” Were there nobody else in the room he would have liked to sweep Nora into his arms and hug her for her kind words. Despite his attraction to her, she was reminding him more and more of a sweet aunt. The sort that drank sherry, baked pies, and always had surprisingly good advice if you stopped to ask and listen.

Next, Professor Wolfinson turned his attention on Eliza, folding his hands behind his back and lofting an eyebrow at her. “It is true, Miss Carroll, though I assure you that all of my blood is perfectly serviceable, as it carries oxygen and nutrients wherever they are required. It feeds strength to my limbs that they may serve my will.” Phil’s voice, while gruff and mildly chiding, was for the most part playfully teasing. His body language was inviting while maintaining a modicum of formality. He wasn’t pushing her away, but attempting to draw her nearer and out of Garrett’s grasping hand.

"Well, that is quite good to know, Mister Wolfinson. If it couldn't do that much then I'd have to rethink my first opinions on you," she teased back, wagging a finger at him. "And if you would, because we're all called Carroll here, call me Eliza." She lifted her dainty little hand, which was actually a bit calloused at the palm, in a shake. "May I call you Phil?"

The corner of Garrett's mouth twitched. "Of course you mayn't. How rude of you, Liz," he scolded.

Nora found herself letting out a small laugh as she watched the scene, wrapping an arm around her husband's back, her hand resting on his opposite shoulder.

Instead of shaking Eliza’s hand, Philius grasped it firmly and raised the back of it to his lips, pressing them to it firmly for the barest moment, while watching her eyes. “Ah, but there is only one MISS Carroll in the room. Even if your younger cousin were here, you would be the eldest, still making you Miss Carroll and making her Miss Leela. Protocol has contingencies aplenty, Miss Carroll."

"However... It is my pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Eliza, and while I am unused to all but a small handful of people calling me... ‘Phil'...” He cleared his throat a bit, then proceeded, still holding her hand. “... I can see you mean no disrespect by it. When asked in such dulcet tones and by so stunning a young lady, I find myself unable to decline. Call me Phil, Miss Eliza, if it pleases you.”

The smitten professor loosened his hold on Miss Carroll's hand to see if she would withdraw it.

One hand came up to her cheek in a bashful manner as he laid the favor upon her hand. She did narrow her eyes, however, when she noticed his mention of her using his first name. She chewed on her bottom lip for a moment, then said, "Actually, for now, because there is only one Mister Wolfinson, let me scratch that offer." Hr hand slid from his, resting at her side.

Garrett looked between the two, shoulders stiff. "Perhaps it would be time for us to withdraw for the day, don't you think, Eliza? You must be tired after your trip. We must sort your things. I would also love to see Cassandra back at the house, ah..." Anything, anything to get his daughter away from this wolfish Wolfinson!

Fawn had been watching from the back with her rather large, doelike eyes, but whenever someone turned to make eye contact, she quickly averted her gaze to the floor. She had her own opinions about the scene, but none of it showed on her face.

Ernest had been watching the events occur with lips pressed tight in a line, the smoldering end of his cigar glowing dimly. The head of the Caroll family betrayed not a single thought nor any emotion in the way he stood. He was a prime example of stoicism, making Zeno of Citium himself proud. The man looked as if he could rule without ever uttering a command.

He gave a glance to his beloved before turning to give Garret a nod.

"I do believe we are expected to make or return shortly. I wouldn't want to cause Miss Baker anymore worry."

Philius gave another slight bow toward Eliza, then to the rest of the assembled Carrolls. “Must you all depart so soon? Ah, well. I understand perfectly. Once my shop has been properly set up I will be much better equipped for hospitality. It has been my distinct and thorough pleasure to make a wider acquaintance with the house of Carroll.”

A mild frown touched his face as he glanced around the barren shop. "I, uh. I do hope that all of you will feel perfectly free to visit anytime the fancy strikes you. I'm afraid the place feels rather empty at the moment. Even once it is brimming with books, one does require the company of more than books, and you have all been very kind."
