Dead at six, not enough time to feel a woman's touch other than his mothers. Not enough time to know and name emotions that course through his body. Not enough time to hear his mother, father, brother when they grow old.

Parents aren't even grey, and they're saying goodbye.

But Death wasn't permanent. Someone botched the job on the way to those pearly gates. And so he walks the fade, his presence not quite a memory, not quite factual evidence. He wanders, aimlessly, not understanding, not comprehending...

The wailing and whistling of the wind through the city blocks hung dryly in little ears, the harsh sounds reaching him through the haze of mist and dust, white noise in the world he knew. As he wandered through the slums, eyes large, blue, and tinged with red, he couldnā€™t stop the head-pictures that floated through a small, scared mind. Pictures of a woman that he called mother, a man that he didnā€™t really know, his brother, Matt, that was always taking his toy train and holding it above his head. He didnā€™t like Matt. Matt was mean.

His pale body and face were covered with a sheen of static to the outside viewer, his stature shimmering and shifting in and out of focus, like a television station that was picking up a bad signal. His face was always downturned, but he couldnā€™t cry; couldnā€™t make the tears fall, even though he really wanted to. The vulnerability flew off of him in slow, rippling waves, looking for all the world a sleepy, scared little boy in a too-big T-shirt and pants that he held up with a small, chubby fist.

As he walked the streets, he took in his surroundings with wide eyes. There was nobody in the slums; nobody to point and gasp and stare at the boy as he wandered. He liked it, here. Nobody stared at the particles surrounding him; nobody stared at the fact that if you squinted, you could see right through him, and nobody stared at the gaping hole in his stomach, ringed with blood and darkened black from his t-shirt. No, it was just him and his wandering.

Him and his mind.

The conflicting emotions raced through the boy as he whipped around at the touch, backing up rapidly on unsure feet. The motion was too much for him, however, and he staggered and fell, one red shoe arcing high in the air as his rump hit pavement. His sorrowful eyes looked up at Mama's, meeting her with a curious, lost expression. Why had she touched him? Why had she bothered to lay her hand upon him this way. With curiosity overriding his fear, he examined her form, from head to toe, before opening his small, oval mouth to express a complaint.

"Who're you?"

He quirked his head to the side, curiously. "Mama?" He repeated, childlike voice in a lilted question, high and pure. He was a good singer, too. Mother always said so.

"But. But you're not my Mama. My mommy's gone. She went to heaven on a bus." He looked down at the hole in his stomach, frowning. As he did so, a fresh wave of static washed over his form, accenting the darkness of the hole. When he looked up, his gaze was flat, dead. "Why do I call you Mama?"

Warren Aulare was wandering aimlessly about when suddenly he smiled at the sky. For a moment he stood there and stared up into Terran Orbit. A satisfied nod and he turned on his heel with new direction. He thumbed at the die in his pocket as he made his way in to the city.
