a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Jag

Description

Designation: "Gerius" Nine

Age: Mid-thirties

Height: 6'4"

Current Number Active: Unknown

Nine was designed for physical efficiency. Tall and broad-shouldered, the dark-skinned man carries in his frame a powerful strength that has been trained into a lean body and a master in the martial art of capoeira, known for its agility, powerful kicks, and sweeps. Appearing to be somewhere in his thirties rather than the young and youthful appearance of many, he is not a figure many enjoy seeing in the darkness of night.

Personality

Direct and honest, Nine is not imbued with the subtle charm of an Eleven. Never one to mince words, a Nine speaks his mind in most situations and has no fear to point out the truth people attempt to hide beneath the layers. Although stereotyped by some to be nothing more than dumb muscle, the silent and direct nature of a Nine makes them highly perceptive to their surroundings and the very nature of the people with whom he associates. A Nine will often blatantly call out someone's fatal flaws and explore the nature of their failings and strengths of their humanity. Strangely, a Nine is a easy creature to get along with socially if one can hold on with thick enough skin.

When unquestionably loyal, the Nines hold a more jaded regard toward their creator, Dr. Saven Laric, than some of their "sisters" who regard the man as something of a living creator-God. As a result, there is some strife on the "homefront," and Nines and Elevens rarely work together and have even been known to oppose one another.

History

Dr. Saven Laric created his ninth model to replace the "Fours" originally designed for operations work in his scheming. From the time of their initation, Nines were engineered to work in isolation without the need for the social and emotional connection inherent with some of the the other models.

Notable Nines

Damian -- Without question, the most infamous of the Nines. Originally intended as a stand-in for Laric during the more dangerous or shady business deals, the Nine quickly associated himself with the underground and gained a reputation as a man that shouldn't be crossed. He is now an independent enforcer. While there are no direct communications between Laric and Damian, the Nine has developed a very efficient habit of making enemies and problemmakers disappear permanently.

So begins...

Gerius Nine entered the bar dressed plainly in a jacket and a pair of jeans. Standing with a strong frame at 6’3”, Gerius did his best to blend in with the crowd and found himself surprisingly normal for the night. A pleasant surprise, at that. Settling up to the bar, the man sighed as he eased into a seat and began to tap in a drink order while turning his head to the side and looking curiously at Lukas just a seat over.

“Aren’t you maybe a little young?” The larger and older man asked without a shred of judgment, only curiosity.

Gerius Nine entered in simple clothing and with little fanfare, but anyone standing at 6’3” tended to draw attention regardless of how they carried themselves. Dressed plainly in a light wind jacket and a pair of brown pants, the man ran a hand over a smooth head before settling up at the bar with an easy sigh and a neutral expression. He didn’t seem like the type to worry much about the potential outbreak of violence in the world around him.

“I’m willing to bet that you’re too young to even think about getting a drink in here. I’m also willing to bet that you’ve never had an ounce of trouble getting anything you wanted. Does that seem right to you?” He said to Lukas two seats over, strangely open and candid with the boy for a complete stranger.

At least as far as Lukas knew.

Gerius Nine started to flux in and out of moods again. Just moments ago he’d tried to start a fight with the man by launching a random and unprovoked insult, followed by good-natured drinking joke and smooth lie. Now he fluxed into a sudden hard face, losing the devious smirk that so many immediately painted onto his face as a creature of habit.

“It’s personal. She took someone away from me and I’m not the forgiving or forgetting type.” Keller wished the words were a lie. “And don’t let the money fool you – I’m just a prince of bad investments. Ask anyone.”

Gerius Nine felt his lips spread into a smile for a brief moment at the boy’s response. Twenty-three? Gerius didn’t believe the boy for a moment, but he cared even less than he believed. Words didn’t mean anything. Lying told just as much about a person as any truth they could divulge. As long as someone was talking, they were telling some truth – regardless of the words they actually spoke.

“Oh, I wouldn’t go putting the material so far down on your lists, my young friend,” the man said with a few idle taps of the menu screen. “You’d be surprised how many existentialists and people who believe is something greater and beyond suddenly start thinking very much about the material world when you hold their feet to the fire.” That last part he’d meant literally.

Gerius Nine felt the smile break into a light chuckle as he stopped playing with the console before him for a moment, clasping fingers in front of him and turning to directly face the young man Lukas. Compassion? Acceptance? Affection? Now this one was seeming even younger and younger with every word that poured of him mouth. Gerius was more than intrigued. He didn’t understand why he’d been sent – this was Eleven work if he’d ever seen it – but who was he to question the will of creation?

“Let me guess – you’re in love? That’s the speech of a lovesick puppy if I’ve ever heard one,” he said with a laugh. Again, there was no judgment in the man’s voice, just a sense of amusement in his observations about the world around him as if experience each nuance for the first time.

Gerius Nine watched at the boy stumbled over the word. Hell, Gerius might has well have delivered a stiff punch to the boy’s stomach the way that the young man reeled and searched for anything coherent to come out of his lips. Nine didn’t understand his job, but he was enjoying it – for now.

“No shame in love, boy,” the man said, his deep voice sliding smoothly across the air as he spoke. “Then again, no shame in just getting what’s yours and getting out before the morning, too.”

The man couldn’t help but noticed the twisted torture on the boy’s face. It was obvious that Lukas’ heart was anywhere but on their private conversation at the side of the bar. No, he was intent on things going on back behind him.

“I like you, little man. You’re all right by me,” he said with a friendly slap on the shoulder.

Gerius Nine glanced down at the picture. The discerning look on the man’s unique features would seem to Lukas, if the young man bothered to look, to be those of a man racking his memory and searching in a sea of faces for any attachment to the pretty girl in the photograph before him. Lukas wouldn’t and couldn’t know that this particular Nine was accessing the memories and thoughts of all the Nines that had come before him. And the Elevens. And the Others, too.

“I’m ‘fraid not, little friend,” the man said with surprisingly tender fingers flirting with the edge of the picture for another moment before sliding it back to Lukas. Nine kept the truth of his words to himself. “Now you really looking for that pretty girl or the eyes of that fella them boys o’er there are trying to get into trouble?”

Apparently, Gerius didn’t miss much.

Gerius Nine shook his head lightly. “Boy, if were looking for one of mine I’d be standing on a rooftop screaming all through the night. Not sliding a picture around to random folks in a seedy place like this,” Nine spoke with a sympathetic smile. Nine had family, too. Large and genetically engineering, but a family all the same. Maybe they he wasn’t as affectionate and “devoted” in the strange obsessive way that one would find an Eleven, but Nines were all about proving themselves.

“Tell you what,” he said, holding out his hand, “you got another copy of that picture maybe? I can ask around, maybe some circles that you don’t get to run in. Might turn a little something up.”

Gerius Nine slid back into the bar with a crack of his knuckles and long glare around the room. The Nine wasn’t sure why he’d never bothered to visit this place before. Then again, it wasn’t like his line of work normally led him to a place like this. Orders were orders, however, and the Nine found himself actually enjoying the change of pace for once as he hung a jacket on a hook by the door and adjusted the sleeves to the nondescript sweatershirt covering his upper body.

Amused, but not entirely happy. Nines enjoyed efficiency and tactical operation above all and the games that he was required to play were challenging. Then again, he was always in the mood for a good fight. Or just feeling a man’s life give out between his fingers. Either way. The 6'3" man settled his stout frame into a seat.

Gerius Nine eyed the situation going on. As usual, it was bunch of muscle-bound idiots who thought that a badge on their chest or a patch on their shoulder made them God. Nine knew God, knew his Creator personally and served him in a way that these men could never understand. The only way to make them understand would be simply to allow them to see the futility of their actions – to arrange a meeting with their own god.

Adjusting the sleeve of his long-sleeve shirt once again, Nine felt two fingers flirt with the edge of the knife he’d concealed upon walking in. He hadn’t been looking for a target tonight – at least not one that he was trying to kill. For the pompous ass leading the uniformed men around, however he felt a change in the rules of the game were in order. He’d make an exception for Malcolm.

Gerius Nine did the math. Two Nines on the street, another embedded with the right people to track down the man they wanted to find. The insider Eleven continued to supply priceless information and another was working the street and could serve as a decoy at moment’s notice. Then, there were the Others, too. They had all the people, resources, and abilities necessary to achieve their goals. In this case, it was v ery limited purpose that involved an unwarranted interference with Lukas,

As far as the creator was concerned, everything about the Aschen and the rest of the silly-named wastes were all unwarranted interferences and didn’t warrant existence. Nine tended to agree as he tapped the hilt of the blade again with the soft point of his right ring finger, idly watching still.

Gerius Nine sat with his back turned to the door and, it would seem, the world at large beyond its frame. Sitting with legs crossed before him and hands resting peacefully atop cloth-covered kneecaps, the man made only the sounds of calm, peaceful breaths. His clothing was that of a simple man – pants of a black elastic fabric designed for functionality and to avoid restriction. The torso of his frame – one that would reach a few inches over six foot when standing – was protected only by a simple white shirt. Sleeves had once been carefully sewn into the fabric and seemed to have been recently torn away with far less care.

“I wasn’t expected a visitor,” the man spoke with a deep voice without a hint of a turn in his hairless head.

Gerius Nine Forgotten, she’d said. Nine rarely forgot, instead choosing to drink in the minute details of every moment of his existence. A first hinted wisps of a woman’s perfume from across the room, the sudden change of color in a person’s face when calm thought and rational finally breaks in favor of uncensored passion, the taste of the first fruits of the spring after a long, cold and dead winter – all these were the spices of the life that made one such as Nine such an unique creature. To others they were window dressing. To Nine they were everything.

“Then perhaps a more proper welcome is in order,” the man said with a graceful rise to his feet, frame stretching to the full potential of its height as he turned. The man’s brown eyes were unfailing in their gaze at any object, this time forgoing the other senses for a long gaze that woman. “Why do I get the feeling that you’re going to be full of surprises?”

Gerius Nine couldn’t help but think to himself that it felt good to be alive. Then again, alive was a relative concept for someone like Gerius, just another Nine in a long line of Nines. Each with their own purpose, personality and pulse. A soul, however, was something of great debate for each of them. Human? More or less? Just not…born.

Gerius wasn’t complaining, however. The man fit in with the best of the worst that liked to call this place home. A pair of long black pants covered athletic legs while a grey sweater-material shirt, worn and weathered, covered his body along with a dark brown leather jacket. A light growth, little more than stubble, covered his head as he entered the bar and slowly removed his jacket to reveal a frame that relied on strength over bulk.

Gerius Nine made one last withdrawal from the jacket before folding it over the top of the booth near the back for the room, withdrawing a half-smoked cigar. Easing into the seat, the broad-shouldered man placed it between his lips and bit down slowly. He made no motion to reach for a lighter or take any steps to burn the cigar, his teeth rolling it about in a slow chew on the end of it. He simply liked the way that it felt and the image that it produced.

If you were going to kill someone, it was Gerious’ thinking that it should be done in style.

The simple message staring back at Nine from the dimly-lit screen of the phone as he entered the bar was short and to the point. You only need to scare him. Nine brushed off the sleeve of the faded red on the jacket as he tucked the phone away into the pocket.

"Pain is scary," he mumbled to himself before approaching the bar.

Beer by the bottle, cheap brand with even cheaper packaging. Quality and the finer things in life had never held much interest for the man, so it was a perfect marriage for him. Finding his way to a table set back away from the busy counter of the bar and the main flow of patrons in and out, the tall and broad-shouldered man set the bottle down on the table and shed the jacket before taking his seat. The air in the room seemed heavy as it were nothing but fumes of tension simply waiting for the first spark to ignite.

His kind of place. Taking his first hit from the bottle, the man slowly and meticulously peeled the label from the outside the bottle and spread it across the table before pulling a book of matched from the jacket pocket.

As Saven took the seat across from him and began to speak of the situation, the man's attention was drawn back toward the back, back to the same place he'd been idly monitoring since he entered the bar. Gerius was fit -- thanks to careful design -- for the job falling to him. Slowly, he rose from the table. Standing at 6'4" with broad shoulders and a surprisingly-agile frame, he looked the part. Black pants, white shirt, black leather jacket, and a pair of reflective sunglasses now covering his eyes.

It only took a few steps for him to approach Jade and Jonathan, speaking to the young woman as if he'd been taking orders from the girl since she was barely old enough to see over the counter of the bar.

"Any problems, ma'am?"

Gerius Nine played the dismissal coolly as though he expected exactly that. He hadn't expected anything more from the young woman but had struck his desired effect -- hopefully Jonathan would note the interaction and come to his own conclusions. Gerius stepped down a ways at the bar and ordered two drinks, another neat Scotch and a generic-label beer.

Without saying a word, the dark-skinned man returned to the table and placed the drinks on the edge. Dutifully, he fished into the inner chest pocket of the leather jacket covering his body and revealed a menacing...pack of cigarettes. Packing them down with the expertise of a man that had to enjoy a stick or two of his own, he flipped the package open and slid one out for the man across the table before brandishing a lighter as well.

Gerius Nine couldn't help himself as he stood at the end of the table, turning his attention back to Jonathan in his rather outward show of aggression and childlike behavior for someone that was supposedly entrusted with a great deal of authority and responsibility. The man took a swing of the bitter beer and sat it down on the table before calling out.

"Might big piece of work you're flaunting around there. Someone might say that you were compensating for something else you're missing."

Gerius Nine rose his head up from the corner table where he'd been enjoying a quiet drink and doing random sketches on pages within a worn and weathered tablt. Who would have thought that someone with the figure of the Brute Squad would fancy himself an amateur artist?

At the barking sound of the bartender shouting aloud at the women, he burst from the table and charged toward the situation, reaching into the pocket of his leather jacket.
