Description

Image Jamie

Full Name: Jamie Parkin
Age: 20
Date of Birth: 14 March 1991
Place of Birth: Wing City

Early Years: Born into a family of winged people, growing up wasn't too difficult for Jamie. At the age of five, he was enrolled in a school specifically started for children with wings that taught general skills alongside wing care, athletics and flight classes. At eight, Jamie won his first competitive flight race and made it his goal to fly competitively for Wing City in the future. However, at fourteen years old, Jamie was diagnosed with narcolepsy after it was triggered during a flight class - thankfully, a friend managed to slow his descent long enough for one of the three teachers to reach them. Since then, Jamie has had to train around the several extremely tired periods of his days.

Now: Jamie is part of an athletic group of fliers who all fly competitively. Although he is not the strongest flier there, it is usually agreed by his peers that he is one of the most dedicated considering how difficult it can be to fly around narcolepsy.

So begins...

Surprisingly, in all of his twenty years and four months in Wing City, Jamie Parkin had never been in Gambit's Bar. Which was probably a good thing, really, but when you'd heard all the horror stories about the bar-that-just-would-not-level as a teenager, being able to just head out and see what the hell was going on.

Plus the whole 'I have wings' thing would help if he needed to get the fuck out of there. So Jamie wandered into the bar with a bit of a grumpy face going - it wasn't his fault, he was just having what he liked to call a 'narcy moment'. He would get five or six of these periods a day, no matter how much sleep he'd had or how he tried to regulate his diet to suit it, although he usually didn't actually pass out that often. It did happen, though.

Without any surprise at seeing another winged person in the room, he simply brushed past her (his wings weren't exactly tucked in to his back all that tightly) and headed towards the bar.

He fancied a drink. Then maybe after that he'd go flirt around the room...

Trying to fashion somewhat happy expression in an attempt to look like he wasn't dragging his wings (not literally of course, that would be stupid - do you know how difficult it is to wash your own wings?), Jamie ordered a cola with ice. Start easy. Or not at all, really, but don't just start with alcohol. Major turn-off: drunken and disorderly behaviour!

"So..." Time to make conversation. "Do you usually stand around blocking doorways with your wings in your spare time or what..?"

"I don't spend a lot of my time in shady bars," Jamie replied with a somewhat cocky smirk. "I'm an athlete. I live on the other side of Wing City, so I don't usually have much occasion to be here. A friend told me it was an 'experience' and I thought I'd see what kind of experience. We tell horror stories about this shithole at training and everything..."

Trailing off in order to pay for his drink and pick the glass up, Jamie shook his head and stood up. After glancing around the bar once more (as if he would find someone more interesting to strike up a conversation with), he moved to sit next to Skyler, the wing closest to her tucked in tighter than the one on his other side.

"And I'm Jamie. Nice to make your acquaintance, Skyler."

Jamie Parkin tried valiantly not to laugh at how tragic the woman was, stumbling around drunk and generally sleeping in the worst places, and in order to aid himself in this cause, he focussed his attention on Skyler.

"I fly competitively," he grinned. Damn straight it was impressive! Even more impressive when you knew about the narcolepsy but he wasn't one to go about stating that he liked to fall asleep at the worst possible times - if it was necessary then... yeah... He had a health bracelet on underneath his long-sleeved shirt, so at least paramedics would know if he collapsed.

"You hang around here a lot then?"

Jamie Parkin listened politely, all the while sipping at his juice and trying not to look like he was about to fall asleep in his glass. "Er... Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot of us. I went to a school specifically for kids with wings, too. It was awesome. There are four other guys in my team, all of us have wings. There're two of us with feathered wings and the other three guys have flesh and bone wings."

The man shook his head. "God, no. Lots of us around. And no, not here on a whim... Just that the opportunity presented itself. A mate of mine was supposed to come-with but there's a lot of, like, bad stories about this place. I think he freaked out and jumped ship," Jamie said, ruffling his feathers with some form of low pride about being brave enough to actually turn up here. It wasn't so bad... If you ignored the freaks.

With yet another shrug of his dark-feather wings, Jamie smiled. "Interesting, huh? Fair does. So you don't know anyone else with wings or something? Because, yeah, the school is exclusively for winged... for winged..." Jamie stopped and covered a yawn with both of his hands. "For winged kids. There are teachers without wings, but for the personal-social classes and the flight classes, they gave us teachers with wings. Obviously..."

God, he was so tired...

"I don't really know - I graduated like three years ago, so you'd have to get in contact with the head teacher. My little brother goes there now, though, so I suppose you could always come with me sometime when I go to pick him up... Not that I think you're, like, my new best friend or nanny or anything."

Yeah, no. His little brother was not the cute, adorable six year old most expected him to be. When you could fly five feet off the ground and were constantly telling random strangers private family stories, you were generally a pain in the arse.

Yep. He was nodding off. He could feel it - so damn tired. Wake up. Quickly draining a portion of his juice in the hopes of having a bit of a sugar rush, Jamie stifled another yawn and shrugged his wings. "Er... well, you fly a lot. We got taught how to fly at school, and once you get to the 'high school' part of it, you can join teams. The way our coach explained it was that 'normal-folk' schools had track teams and football teams - we had flight teams. Plus, our cheerleaders were so much better at everything. You usually have to get a scholarship before you're invited onto the competitive team I'm on, too. One of the flesh-and-bone guys didn't, he was picked up by a scout."

Jamie Parkin snorted. Then he seemed to realise that that was kind of rude and covered his mouth in an attempt to look like he didn't mean to do that. "No offence... but the team I'm on is really... I don't even know how to explain it without insulting somebody. It's not easy to get into the team is what I'm saying. Especially if you've never been in a flight class. There's a whole other level to just 'being good' at flying - you've got to have the right competitive technique and all that. S'why they start teaching you how to fly properly and economically in junior school and then competitively in high school. You're just adding to technique you already have."

"Didn't say that you couldn't do it," he pointed out, the words 'health issue' sticking with him more than they really should've. "I'm just saying there's no point in trying when you know you haven't got the right skills. Tell you what - I'll find someone who can teach you, right? That'd be good, wouldn't it? It's training and endurance all in one. Besides, we need someone else on our women's team and everyone who's came in so far always gets rejected because they're completely useless and not committed enough."

"I have a weird schedule," came the man's response. "Most people don't like that. I figured you'd just prefer someone who could teach you at set times everyday... Wouldn't you prefer that?" He certainly would. Made it difficult to figure out when he could do anything if he had to drop appointments for training just because he hadn't been able to get in enough training before it.

"Sounds more like I find a weird, hole-in-the-wall winged girl who's never gotten a proper education and I get credit for tumbling out of the sky and breaking both my wings... but hey! Sounds like fun. You do realise that by 'weird' schedule, I mean that it's very rarely the same on any two days in a week and it often includes midnight flights... I'd have to... I dunno, call you whenever I'm getting ready to fly or something." Dammit. He'd have to tell her about the narcy moments too in case he did fall out of the sky and try to kill himself. Oh well - that could be discussed later.

"Hope you don't plan on getting a nine-to-five job..."

Oh, God, he'd have to come back? "Seriously? Uuh... well, I didn't really plan on coming back but I suppose... You should really get a phone. Everyone has them nowadays. Like underwear," Jamie mused. "We'll have to have a long-ass talk about everything first."

"Sounds cool... Anywhere we could talk, or would you rather put that off for another time? I'm cool either way. Not going to be flying any time soon considering."

"Sure, I guess walking couldn't hurt," Jamie hedged, a little anxious. Maybe the fresh air would wake him up a bit. He finished off his glass of juice and stood up, relaxing his wings somewhat before looking pointedly at Skyler. "Up or down Main Street?"

"So, you mentioned that you had a duff wing or something? Probably shouldn't fly on it for a while - we can do exercises instead, you know what I mean? No actual weight put on the wing, but you keep the movements fluid and natural. It's all great for for the muscles at the very base of the wing, too... helps to release tension, bit like a massage. Speaking of, have you had a massage before? On your wings, I mean? Sports masseurs can do wonders for the wings."

"I'll book you in with the woman who does my wings twice a week, right? Loose muscles are quick muscles, that's what she always says... Any other problems I should know about?" Funnily enough, he didn't see that astounded by the thought of someone taking a crowbar to a wing. "Flight partners should share all of their shit. Safer."

"Ah, well. That's good. I think. That you haven't had any lately, that is. They'd kick you off the team like that if they thought you were going to drop out of the sky every single day." Lord, they'd nearly kicked him off and he barely dropped once a month, and he'd never dropped during a competition. The adrenaline rush usually kept him far too awake.

"I... God, I don't even think it matters, but I have narcolepsy. D'you know what that is?" If not, he'd downplay it majorly. If she did well... The words 'very mild' always seemed to regain a bit of confidence.

Shit. "You noticed?" Damn. He thought he'd been doing pretty well hiding. "Er... no, not bored by you or anything. Just tired. I get these short periods like six or so times a day where I'm fucking knackered - the doctor calls them 'danger zones'. It's where I'm most likely to just drop down asleep and so on, y'know? I don't usually, though. Barely ever. Maybe twice a month at the very, very most unless I'm stressed out. My final year at school, I dropped out of eight flight classes and I conked out during all eight of my final exams. Still got my scholarship." Yep, that was a cocky tone right there.

"I'm really fucking tired right now," he admitted with a shake of his head. "And my doctor wrote a long-ass note to get me an extra hour in my exam if I did conk out. I don't flunk for an hour, I mean, but right before and for a good half an hour after I'm barely conscious anyways, so... It's all just timing, really. To avoid the whole 'falling out of sky and dying' thing."

"Hey, if you fall, that's on you," Jamie dead panned. "I'm kidding, by the way. Of course I'd catch you. I've been caught... Well, a lot of times. So yeah, I'd be a bit of an ungrateful little rat if I didn't help other people out too."

Jamie Parkin shook his head. "Nah," he replied even as he stifled another yawn. "Doesn't help. I mean, if I sleep enough it goes away, but then I get another attack anyway, so... Just have to trundle through them. But, anyways, you can trust me. I'm pretty damn quick on my wings, so you definitely won't die if you seize mid-air."

"Well, I wouldn't say it justifies it... just says that I'm as stupid as you or something? I dunno. Either way, we're both a pair of idiots for flying as we are. I even have a bracelet that tells folks I just drop down into snooze-land - looky," he prompted, holding up his hand and pulling his sleeve down his arm. "Nifty, eh?"

"Aah. Well, I got taken into hospital when I had my first little nod-off - it was during a flight class in school. I think I was about fourteen or something at the time. A friend managed to slow me down long enough for one of our tutors to get there, and apparently mid-flight nap-times can be a sign of some form altitude sickness or something. Most of the people who are at the school are born with wings, so if you get altitude sickness it's not natural. We're kind of built not to get that kind of thing. Not that we were anywhere near high enough for it to have been altitude sickness, but there you go."
