Katie Brighton

"It does not matter what you do, as long as what you do is what you know is good."

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Curtsive

Description

ImageTrue name is Bskevoliq Brighton, but Katie is his Terran English name.

Katie is dim, affable, and curious. His home planet, Teta IV, is a matriarchal theocracy with a strict hold on it's residents. The culture integrates all of the citizens into the main religion, which, surprisingly, is far more forgiving than the actual society. It takes a lot for a citizen of Teta IV to escape Teta IV, but through money and family ties, the mercenary has achieved just that.

Generally, he doesn't follow his culture's socially acceptable norms, such as deep-seated xenophobia. He is deeply religious, but prefers to carry out his religious affairs in private rather than public, not even going so far as to pertain to religious clothing laws.
Image
Vrischvu is Katie's religion, with the ruling goddess of Dezil. She preaches equality in all humankind and leading a virtuous life.

Equipment:

Katie's armor is made by his father's company; Brighton. They're big on quality and aesthetics. His armor by itself is lightweight - using steel, cloth, and other various metals. It does it's job as effectively as it can while remaining light, mostly protecting his chest and leg areas. The designs are custom and have a Celtic influence.

With him, he keeps a black bow. It seems standard - high quality, malleable, and expensive. A small white engraving is on the side of it - Brighton again. It leads one to believe all his equipment is manufactured custom.

He uses different arrows, most of them being capped or have barely detectable bristles.

So begins...

Katie Brighton's Story

A man walked into the bar.

His armor seemed expensive - sleek, and shiny. When he walked, his supplies made quiet sounds as they clacked against eachother. Even though he had only taken a few steps into the place, his demeanor screamed his timidness and indecisiveness, as his eyes took a moment to fly over the other patrons. Soon enough, though, he found himself sitting at a bar seat, at the stark end.

With his back to most of the crowd, one could see he was armed with nothing more than a quiver and a bow. He was an archer.

The man with the bow, however, had still been at the bar, his eyes fixated on the menu. It was all foreign to him - lines and numbers and symbols that looked confusing and similar. He spent a good 10 minutes flipping through the holo-menu, before actually placing his order. And while he waited, he looked.

Around, to the other patrons, again. They were confusing, at the very least. Some dressed normal, some dressed silly, and one of them was a hulking robot. The time the man spent waiting for his drink was spent with his arms crossed in front of his chest, and his gaze flickering between the jester and the super soldier.

Although his armor was far from medieval, it did have the influence. Katie wore a tabard under his metal armor of Celtic design, and a symbol painted to the front, blocked out by the black strap of his quiver.

But it hadn't mattered too much to him, having been unaware of the super soldier's scan. His drink arrived soon enough, and he took it in hand. With a tilt of his head, he attempted to pummel it down, but didn't get past choking on the harshness of it. He was bleary-eyed, and pushed the mug away from him, as if it were an exile. A choked curse in a foreign language came past his mouth, before he poked through the menu again.

And afterward, he glanced about. Katie had shown visual shock upon seeing the large lion man sit down at the bar, much like one does after seeing a dead animal.

Only that one was not dead, and very much humanoid.

The man had gotten to staring.

And still, through depravity of entertainment, Katie lingered.

He soon found himself a better drink - one that didn't scorch his untrained throat. And while he glanced around, he drank it, only stopping occasionally to cough. It all tasted like ginger to him, but his was far less traumatizing now.

And a woman walked in. Foreign or not, Katie had watched her walk in with brows raised. It wasn't in perversion, but there wasn't one person who had come into the bar and wasn't the least bit strange. And so he spoke up.

"Hello, lady!" He said to Jade Fire, waving a hand to her, from whatever distance he was at. Perhaps it was a signal for her to come over, or perhaps it was just a wave. Either way, it was accompanied by a friendly grin.

Perhaps in some sort of cultural miscommunication, Katie had hopped up and eagerly taken a seat next to Jade Fire. It was entirely possible that he interpreted as a wave over, but also possible that the man was being brash.

"Hello! I am Katie." He said, before sticking his hand out in a gesture that might've implied he wanted it shaken.

"Does your hair grow like that?"

"A blessing to meet you, Jade." Katie replied, his accent thick. It was more than obvious that he was a traveller. His hand fell to the counter before he withdrew it, as his handshake hadn't been reciprocated. For a moment, he stared at her, before opening his mouth again.

But before he could say anything, ask any questions, the girl was gone. Katie knit his brow in confusion. Perhaps he said something wrong?

Boy, people were confusing.

Katie looked to the door as it had opened and closed, toward the silent man who walked in. The bar hadn't stirred much otherwise, so it wasn't too hard to spot him. The man hadn't seemed normal either; the type one might find in a dark alley with a beer and a baseball cap. Something akin to a serial killer.

Although he stared contently, the archer rested his chin on his hand and wistfully sighed.

"You are at Gambit's." Katie said as he glanced to Ryker, who he'd laid eyes on just as soon as he barreled into the bar. Of course, it was an answer that Ryker probably already knew, but why would the man ask if he hadn't? Regardless, he moved on.

"No, is not eventful at all." Katie said to the armor-clad man, who was a considerably amount larger than he. After he talked, his mouth lingered open and he stared upwards at the man. "I am Katie. You are very large. Are you human? You are like a bison with metal taped to it," He continued, seeming to lack any sense of tact.

The man stuck his hand out, perhaps a little too early. Regardless, he glanced between the hand and Lazureth's face, as if directing him with his eyes.

Katie glaced backwards as the cop had jolted up to help the man who'd fallen. It wasn't something that the archer was interested in; not if he wasn't going to make a quick buck. Soon enough, he glanced back toward Lazureth, intent on simply continuing their conversation.

Lazureth's questioning tone was simply lost on him, as he couldn't fathom why there would be a question in the first place. After the handshake had ceased, Katie brought his hand to his back and withdrew an arrow.

"It is not archaic if it was not made in an archaic era. Why do people use knives?" He said, as his thumb slid to the endge of the arrowhead.

"Bows are silent; guns are loud. You can't stab someone at a distance, either. For me, it is efficient. For you, guns are efficient. I could also bet you a drink that I could shoot a glass off of your head." He said, with a grin.

When Lazureth at first declined Katie's offer, he raised a brow, yet a contempt smile remained. He had no quarrel with bragging, nor one with betting. The archer's eyes shifted to the tray, however, and his brows knit in confusion.

When the larger man spoke again, however, they shot back up, as did his grin. He seemed to be only slightly surprised at Lazruteh's telekinetic movement of the coin. He had seen it before; psychic powers weren't completely absent in his homeland.

And so, he sighed. It was a difficult target; a single coin across the room. Not one his pride would let him turn down, however. As Sheila had brushed past, he regarded her with a passive confusion, and soon after withdrew his bow. "Are all the ladies angry here?" He asked, upon hopping out of his stool.

After making sure that there wasn't anyone in the general vicinity of the coin, he placed the arrow on the shelf and aimed it. "You are going to owe me that drink, then." Katie said, before holding his breath. A few minutes later, a quiet sound sprung forth, reminiscent of the hissing release of an airlock.

The arrow flew threw the air, far faster than usual. He wasn't using a medieval bow, no. It was sleek and black. In under a second, the arrow pierced through the metal of the coin.

Katie nodded, before trotting to the opposite side of the bar rather quickly and grabbing the arrow. The tip barely pierced the coin, though it was lodged firmly regardless. After snatching it, he brought it back to Lazureth. With a tug, he sat the coin on the counter, and shoved the arrow back into his quiver.

"As per tradition; the youngest member of the family practices a weapon sport in their childhood." He looked to the two already existing coins, and the pierced one. "So it is true this bar is rather dangerous? I figure I handle myself fine."

He glanced to the menu before looking to Lazureth again. "All of your Terran drinks are unfamiliar to me."

"You are protected well. I imagine you have a proficiency in combat. It is a surprise that there is anything able to harm you at all, even if this bar is dangerous." Katie replied in turn, after glancing down at the leg Lazureth knocked on. The archer had noticed it earlier. Of course, it was only rude to note someone's injuries.

"If you don't mind, how did you obtain such an injury?" He asked.

With all of his weapons holstered, and none of his hands resting on them, he spun in his stool to face the bar. Regardless of the foreign symbols he couldn't all understand that seemed to place themselves on the menu, he scrolled through it like a picture book, and punched in an order for something that looked attractive.

Katie looked behind him, to the unfolding scene. He had heard the Terran occupation was bad, but never did he realize how heated it actually was. "Maybe you have the right idea, Lazureth." He said, as the man stood up to leave.

He had only retrieved one of his drinks, though. The archer looked to the coin on the table, as well as the pierced one, and quickly pocketed both. He drank a little of his current drink before setting it back down and forcing himself to his feet.

With that, he stood up, and made for the door.

Katie, meanwhile, had come downstairs quite a while ago. For a little while, he stood at the bottom of the steps that led to the inn rooms and watched the goings-on. Up until Farai's loud entrance, he had kept himself contently. Upon it, he raised an intrigued brow.

He stood up, and made his way to the counter, where there was a fine view of the televisions. His gaze flickered between the fast talking of Farai - not all of which he understood - and the television, which blared the news. When the man seemed to be satisfied with his understanding, he looked to Farai, and approached them.

And in broken, heavily-accented tongue, he spoke.

"Is free?"

Katie lazily looked to the ongoings with the Aschen, and with the others involved in the conflict. Just a moment later, he looked back to Farai, who had lept behind the bar. One-track-mind amok, he simply approached the bar and leaned on it with a hand, not seeming to pick up any imminent danger.

"Thank you," He quickly spat, "I breath in them."

The man seemed to be dissatisfied with the conversation tangent, and continued off. "Have any other info? Interested."

A glance toward Zekil was given, before he looked toward the punk again. "Are you leaving? I will follow if..." Katie had glanced around. It did seem things were escalating. Or were they? He couldn't tell.

In a moment, however, he assumed the behaviour of a lost puppy and hopped behind the counter with the two.

"Different ... races?" Katie raised a brow. He didn't quite understand what that meant. "Aschen are the ones who hold this planet, yes? Random violence?" He asked, seemingly having at the very least, an observation of an encounter in the past.

For a moment, he paused, before speaking up once again.

"You going on this trip?"

The question of where to go seemed to fly over his head, and that Farai's attention had been diverted elsewhere didn't wary his questions a bit.

Katie had nodded, and after glancing up past the bar at the goings-on, he dodged out the staff door just as well.

Katie seemed to keep up fairly easy, though his chest heaved a little more when they had stopped. He glanced over to Alix, only barely noticing them now. With it, he gave a nod of acknowledgement, and moved his hand to the back of his neck.

There seemed to be a sound that followed, much like the release of compressed air. Afterwards, he dropped his hand to his side and spoke in the same dissonant accent that he'd harbored earlier.

"Names?" He asked, almost seeming to butt into Alix's tangent. He pointed at himself. "Katie."

"Probably ran fast because of men with guns shooting things, guessing." He said afterward, conveying a tone of snark that he probably didn't realize was even present.

"Yes, certainly nothing to do with your skin color."

Katie's obliviousness reigned on.

"A pleasure to meet you, Black. My name is normal Terran, yeah?" He nodded, as Farai's implications flew over his head once again. "From Teta IV, I am. Brilliant place. I travel and get work wherever I go. And so maybe Misrana is a chance to."

He glanced over to Alix, who had spoken then approached the radio, seemingly wrapped up in their own thoughts.

"Okay, Al, then? And Aschen, then? They control this planet?"

Just as well, he moved over to hear the radio.

Katie sat down in a stool, cautiously. For a second, it wobbled before it settled, and he placed his hands in his lap. "Lots of aliens, then? Sounds dangerous." He said, in repliance to the person on the radio. He glanced between Alix and Farai.

He opened his mouth, before Alix had gone on a spiel. In a moment, he closed it, and attempted to understand the words they were speaking. Couped up with their accent, it was hard. And, like most 3-way conversations he'd participated in on Terra, he certainly felt like the third wheel.

"We call you Hvechischve," He said, after Alix had finished. The word was relatively soft, compared to the accent that it harbored. "Of course, I am not from Misrana."

And boredly, he propped his head up on his hand as his gaze had rested on them. "I do not plan on fighting for Terran resistance, either. Not unless I'm paid. Have enough trouble already with Tetans."

Katie glanced to Farai, and withdrew his hand from his face to look down to his armor. "Not much packed for a war. Not unless I would like to get shot. I do hope your people come through this war safely then, and you as well. A shame such a..." He glanced to the window and the street again. The streets were rank and dirty, the buildings worn. "...nice place, has to go through war. It happens everywhere."

"Yeah, that's the word for it." He said, giving a quick nod to the word 'mercenary'.

And he lifted his hand as Alix stood up. "Is okay. Stay safe, and do not die. Perhaps Misrana would be a way to escape your suitors, yeah?" With it, he waved. A string of words came after, obviously foreign, and a goodbye in his foreign tongue.

Katie grinned at Farai, for perhaps the first time. Not before his concentrated stare at the radio was broken to do so, however. "I am alien to Terra, this does not mean I am not human. My skin is very much real." He moved his hand to his opposite arm and pinched the skin there, to further his point.

"We are in Wing City. Do you have any..." The man twirled his hand around, as if he were sifting for the correct word. After he couldn't find it, he imitated the same strange gesture as Farai had. Language barriers made people do the strangest things.

"And my planet is all human, for smart animals anyway." He paused. "Sentient? Your animal-animals are different than ours. Very strict there too, most Tetans will not allow a six-armed trans... lu... cent, large-eyed monster on their planet. Or anyone with pointy ears, unless they have a work permit."

It could only imply how fun a time he had in coming to Wing City. Speaking of which, the ground shook and a large explosion had sounded off in the distance. It cut the man's talking quite short, as he held onto his seat with one hand and looked to, as if he were ready to run.

Katie looked a little distraight at 'couldn't speak the language correctly', but Farai had given him no room to protest. As the explosions shook the city, he stood up along with Farai, and nodded.

"Okay. Maybe I will see you there, then?" He said. "I will keep 'tuned in'." With that, he smiled, and waved as Faarai had sped off to wherever they were going to. The ground rumbled again, and it was soon figured that waving and standing still wasn't too good an idea during a terrorist attack.

Soon after, he took off down the street.

Much like the other Terrans and outsiders who came to view the landing of the Misrana spaceship, the Lalitia, Katie Brighton was there just as well. It was quite a sight to be had, only accentuated by the various reactions from the people around him; wonder, amazement, engagement. And he joined in, his expectations having been exceeded with the landing of the ship. A grin spread on his face, he pushed to the front linings of the crowd.

His hands vacantly clapped along with the beat of the drums, and just as much, he stepped aside to let the performers through; much like the other patrons of the landing festival had done.

After a moment, however, Katie's hands seemed to slack at his side as he looked around, past the crowd and performers, to the ship. Perhaps they would permiss people on board after the mock festival had been over with.

For then, he waved a hand to the performers and took in the sight of the ship.

Katie disregarded his confusement at that time to join in the festivities. As it might've been strange for a man of his demeanor to get too excited for the pseudo festival. He did, however, wave quite excitedly and holler at the cat-riders and dancers.

And there was nothing but temporary disappointment when the dancers whisked themselves away, and nothing but enthusiasm when he'd been graced with their presence. Anything of a wary eye toward the colorful assortment of characters had been completely dissolved by the merry festivities.

Just as much, though, he could only wonder when they would open their gates. A thought abrogated by the impressive (but concerning) carapace spaceship, foreign jungle cats, and exotic dancers beforehand, but it arose again.
