a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by HolyJunkie

Description

Name: Lucy Smith
Occupation: Blacksmith, Metallurgist, Inventor, (banned from soccer.)
Age: 53
Height: 6’
Weight: 190lbs
Appearance: She sports natural red hair (not a single grey hair yet) coupled with eyes as orange and blazing as the fires of the forge. Despite her age, she actually looks twenty years younger due to her muscular, Amazon-esque fitness. Due to an accident a long time ago, she lacks both of her original legs. She learned her trade in order to build a set of prosthetics for herself- which she constantly improves upon.
She wears a reinforced set of overalls that support the leg prosthetics she invented. Over top of the overalls, she often has her thick, well-used apron. Everything she wears is covered in char marks and light slashes from getting caught on slivers of metal.
Personality: Overall professional, if almost as blunt as a stereotypical dwarf. Despite that, she can be quite motherly, or even outright flirtatious. Light-hearted, and quick with a joke. She is also very willing (and able) to out-drink her opponents.
Abilities: She is very skilled in metalwork in general, from forging bevels to fabricating custom parts, she sees no impossibility, especially when coupled with what magic potential she holds. She is quite skilled in magics relating to flame, or anything else that relates to her profession.
Due to the strength and durability and flexibility of her prosthetic legs, her kicks are an especially nasty force to go up against.
The only weapon she does pack to a fight is a battle axe with a non-dulling enchantment applied, powered by a sapphire.
History: As an orphaned girl, she was raised by the dwarves of an old, probably obscure clan known as the Strength of Mist and Fire. From them, she learned smithery. She then taught herself to invent when she lost her legs in a terrible smelting accident.

The Strength of Mist and Fire was a small clan with a weak military. Their only strength was their extreme talents in working metals and other materials. They built peerless weapons and armour to the highest bidder. Despite a lack of warriors, the clan amassed great riches, and kept themselves protected by their mountain home. The mountain was covered in a perpetual fog due to the heat of the forge evaporating the moisture and ice that reaches down from the mountaintop. The consistent heat and cold led to unpredictable weather patterns, which formed a natural guard against would-be-invaders.

Lucy moved out at the age of 29 when she felt her imagination and talents were no longer showing signs of improving. Since then, she's worked in many a workshop across lands. She accumulated and built many tools to help her create extremely powerful weapons and armour. Her inventive side led to her learning magic and enchantments to apply to the weapons she creates.

So begins...

A pair of fellows, brothers in fact, had chosen the gardens as their meeting place for today's business. The weather was serene and the atmosphere of the garden always seemed pleasant. The two sat on one side of a park bench with a few papers clipped together, the added weight enough to keep them from fluttering off, and with a few pens scattered around for writing notes. Drakus had always been far more business minded than his brother, but it was Alrion who had come up with the idea. Why not start an adventurers guild?

At first Drakus was objectionable to the matter, but soon he warmed up to it. They could found a mercenary start-up, hire people to do some dirty work and then as their reputation grew, move the bureaucracy to the back and push the workload to the front, paying workers off of merit instead of service, allowing for the best to get rich and the worst to struggle or die. And besides, anything was better than finding his brother passed out drunk on a bench again.

Drakus moved quickly to secure listings of all the promising blacksmiths in town, then narrowed down the list to several that would need to be interviewed, then contacted them individually. After all, a mercenary group would be nothing without its equipment, and a symbiotic relationship was easy to make with someone who dealt with physical goods so regularly. And so the pair waited, chatting idly to pass the time until their first interviewee arrived.

Lucy arrived at the posh gardens in her usual attire. Her crude fashions held an air of grace only on account of how tightly they managed to fit around her build. Her face- scarless due to consistent performance- remained firm and almost emotionless. This was a business proposition she was headed to, after all. No time for revelry… at least, for now. Her gloves were nearly placed in the front pocket of her apron, leaving her powerful hands exposed to the air around them. Typically she wore the gloves almost all the time, but almost all the time, she was at the forge, or at the sanders.

These two dashing young gentlemen were waiting for her, seated on a park bench. They had a stack of papers between them- no-doubt interview questions. Lucy did not mind. She was charismatic… at least, she feels she is. Most people found her blunt, and as crude as the dwarves she was once raised with. The Forge was hard, the oils tempered that hardness, heat and fire was ever unforgiving. She couldn’t afford niceties.

“You the kids who called for a project?” She asked. Her voice, while harsh, almost sounded like a mother talking to her adult children for the first time in a year.

Drakus eyebrow raised at Lucy's arrival. He was the more suitably dressed of the two and had a better understanding on how to manage people and materials. It came with his trade work. "We did. Drakus Flavaar at your service," he said, rising and offering a hand to shake.

Alrion, who was dressed in an extravagant white garment, remained seated and seemed to hold some immediate contempt for Lucy. He was quick to the point. "Alrion. We're brothers. We are planning to start a mercenary company," he stated, "And should like the assistance of one, or more blacksmiths to be our liaison for repairing equipment and dealing in supplies needed for service."

Drakus mouth tugged into a frown, but he nodded. "Mm, what he said is true. We are expecting a long-term commitment to keeping our arm and armour in top condition, and obviously we would gather loot from our mercenary ventures which we would have a keen interest of finding an owner for."

Her hand grasped the other man’s own hand. Having swung a hammer countless times, her hands were immensely tough. “Equipment for mercenaries, eh? This, I can do. I can also invent, customize, and improve on designs.” She nodded and sized up the relatively not as beefy men. Her arms crossed, giving her muscles a more obvious profile. “Will a workshop space be provided? If so, I will need to pack my tools. Might need assistance to move the larger gear.”

"We have yet to secure a workshop at this time," Drakus answered, business-like and cool, "We are laying the ground work for the operation that will end in extensive interviews to hire mercenaries. What we are most interested in knowing is what you are fully capable of? Blacksmiths vary widely in talents and while at first we will largely be dealing with stock equipment such as sword, spears and chainmail, we anticipate the eventual need for masterwork or magical equipment down the line. For... body guard sort of work." He added a casual wave of his hand to the last statement, as if to dismiss any concerns that might have been related to it.

Alrion had in this time taken up his pen and started scribbling down information, mostly what she said she had and was capable of. "Do you have a shop of your own at this time? When things go ahead I may be required to visit it and examine what supplies you have and compare to our own," he added dryly.

“Some call me a metal miracle worker. They are undersellers of my craft.” The bluntness also seemed to include a sense of pride. At the mention of swords, spears, and chainmail, Lucy huffed and smirked in amusement. “What you ask for, it’s no challenge. You are welcome to visit my workshop and feast your eyes on some of my pieces. It’s not far, if you would visit.”

Lucy’s workshop was merely a few blocks away from the Gardens. It was a cheap place, for the location was not ideal for customers to visit often. The main door stood in a long alleyway, and only Lucy’s imposing size could scare away would-be criminals who camped around waiting for one to walk off with a freshly-made work of art. A new workshop would benefit her greatly.

She also informed the two of this unfortunate positioning of her workshop. “For that reason, come with trusted friends, or send word prior to arriving, so I can clear out the rats. However, if you want an immediate sample…”

The smith produced a two-foot sabre, short enough for speed, and long enough to be an effective weapon aboard the confines of a battleship. The hilt was simplistic, but designed to easily catch an incoming blade. The blade itself was as beautiful as it was sharp. With a damascus pattern, the sword looked immediately capable of cleaving through any weaker metal. Merely looking it would draw a chill down the spines of a warrior who would stand against it.

Drakus cocked his head at spying the sword and reached for it. "May I?" he asked, before taking it in hand. He would check the balance of weight, then take it in his hand and swing it about a few times, one arm tucked behind his back. Then with an approving nod and a smile he turned back to offer it, hilt first, towards Lucy all over again. "Expertly made," he complimented.

Alrion scoffed. "Don't you have a wife? Or two?" he shot at his brother, "There will be no need to clear out rats. We'll manage. But I think I'll come around tomorrow at noon." More notes were scribbled, this time detailing the attention to detail at the sword and her confidence on meeting their demand. It all checked out.

“Very well. I will have additional samples awaiting your visit,” Lucy retrieved the sabre and returned the weapon to its scabbard. “I look forward to your visit, and potential business.” At that, she gave a grin, and an almost flirtatious wink. Lucy then turned and stepped off on her way out of the garden. Her boots landed with unusually heavy thuds on the garden path, but she walked as if nothing heavy weighed her down.

The block of land was little more than a former park and barbecue area that had been abandoned, like so much of this part of town, overgrown and left to itself. The roof was held up by four wooden pillars likely just made from trees chopped to fit rather than a real construction and the ground was solid concrete. Along the back, where a park had once been, grass was terribly overgrown, except for a large section where piles upon piles of bricks had been placed, crushing the flora that had tried to thrive.

Drakus stared at the condition of the place, back turned from those who had been invited. He didn't want them to see his disappointment. Alrion said he got the place for cheap, and Drakus could see why. It was a shithole. To make this into a headquarters would require a miracle, or a lot more money. Still, Alrion seemed to be taking charge, standing before the humble crowd and raising his arms to gain their attention.

"Here lies the foundation of our future guild. You are in the company of those who will fight along side you. I won't pretend they are loyal. But you are getting paid. And today you get a choice on how to earn your pay. But that will come in a minute. For the time being, let me introduce each of you," Alrion spoke. His hands proceeded to gesture to each individual as he introduced them.

"Lucy is our blacksmith. She is under no requirements to serve in our work or any of the work today. However, if you come to her, she will fix your equipment, and we will pay for it. When we have a store room, we will keep a stock of equipment under lock and key for any mercenaries to use. We will not buy you new equipment. We will only buy equipment for the company. If you want something made personally, then you'll pay for it yourself."

"There are four of you, Morrow with the tattoos, Bolin the dwarf, Sentry the man and Allantra. I hope that's fairly straight forward. Feel free to introduce yourselves, or don't. I understand that familiarity is something not everyone wants in this line of work. As you know, I am Alrion Flavaar, co-founder with my brother Drakus."

Lucy stood slightly apart from the group. She had her muscular arms crossed, as she quietly judged the physiology of each individual. She made such mental notes in preparation for the proper sizing of whatever weapons and armour she would have to build. She could already envision potential improvements to the gear these strangers carried… but those improvements would be for those who pay for them. Lucy did have a business, after all.

Two small slender girls, a stout axe-toting dwarf, and a long-haired gentleman. Along with the two employers, these individuals will soon be her contractually exclusive customers.

She gestured with a hand within crossed arms when her name was mentioned, as some sort of wave. “Charmed,” she simply stated.

Allantra stood and watched the others. She didn't know what to say to them, but she did know that she would have to depend on them to watch her back and vice versa. She knew that she would have to go to Lucy when she needed her weapons repaired, but that didn't stop her from going over to the woman and introducing herself.

She would also would have to go and talk to the others. Get to know them. Find out what their strength and weaknesses were and their likes and dislikes. She didn't want to come off as too talkative, but she has to know in order to work effectively with them.

She walked over to Lucy and held out her hand. "Hello... I'm Allantra. How are you??" She asked and waited for Lucy to respond to her.

“I appreciate the gesture,” Lucy replied to the dwarf’s offer for assistance, “However, even the dwarves I called family knew I took great pride in my artistry. I would not dream to burden my clients with handling the flames when they have their own work to do.”

One of the smaller women, one who wore a face mask, approached to introduce herself. Allantra, an interesting name to be sure. She asked how Lucy fared.

“I do very well, little one,” Lucy replied, “Though this particular location leaves much to be desired, especially if I am to move shop here.” She turned to her employers. “I imagine as these fine warriors complete jobs, this place will be improved upon?”

"Very well Mistress Lucy" *Bolin finished chopping down the tree then trimmed its branches and rolled it underneath the central roof of the Slums, were he split in two to create a rough table for the guild to hold meetings around.*

Turning to his employers he asked. "What becomes of any Loot or Equipment we come across during our jobs. it would be a shame to leave valuable items were they lay when we could make use of them to better out position and the Guilds. And what of these fine warriors you have brought together what are there skills can they hold the line or are they ranged fighters and most importantly who will lead us in battle?

Allantra felt awkward holding her hand out and Lucy ignoring it, but she figured that she had a lot on her mind and thinking about her position here. She let her hand drop to her side and turned to listen to Drakus and Alrion. She wanted to know what they were going to say to them now that they were all together.

She slowly made her way to the table that the dwarf had made and looked it over. "Nice job on the table." she said as she looked at him. "I am Allantra." she said and held out her hand... hoping that he wouldn't leave her hanging the way Lucy did. "Do you make weapons too??"

Alrion wafted his hand for the attention of the group. "Alright, I hope you're all introduced, as from now on you are working for me," he stated firmly, only to glance over his shoulder and catch a raised eyebrow aimed at him from Drakus. "Us," Alrion corrected, "And that means you start working now. With the exception of Lucy, of course. You have a choice of two jobs today. The first is helping Drakus and I cart bricks from the back to start laying them around this building." He paused to let people think it over. "Or, you can go try and recruit a specific individual for the guild. Drakus... would you mind...?" Alrion stepped aside to let his brother speak.

"Mm, yes, well," Drakus said, largely unprepared. This entire sudden swing of his brother into taking charge had just left him completely off-tilt. "Due to some mysterious encouragement, the crew of pirate captain Kate Darkrayne has mutinied and left her grounded. This is the perfect opportunity for us to recruit someone with a bit of experience and guts. And if she won't join out of the goodness of her heart, then we would appreciate if you could recruit her violently and have her brought here. Alive. That being said, she's not likely to pull punches, so don't get killed either. Who's volunteering?"

Morrow had been ignored in the meet and greet, which was all well with her. The woman had the chance to glance over everyone, see how they had interacted with each other as they thought her to be ignoring them and not paying attention. It would seem that for a lot of mercenaries the group was rather 'nice', trying to make friends. Didn't they understand that at any moment they could all be killed? There was no use getting chatty with each other, who would know if they'd even see each other tomorrow?

At the offer of a job so soon, Morrow's lips twisted upwards into a slight grin, showing off pointed teeth as the snake on her cheek writhed. She was always up for a challenge. She swaggered over to where Bolin was at and gave a nod. "I think we can handle this Captain. Let the others lay a great," she stopped herself from snickering, "foundation for us to arrive back to."

"I will go with you, if you'll have me." She said as she turned and looked at Morrow. Allantra didn't know how to take this other female, but she would just have to do her best and try to get along with her. She didn't know if she would be able to call this band of mercenaries her friends one day, but she will work with them for as long as she can.

She also turned to the brothers, wanting to know what they would say to Bolin's question. She wanted to know how much they would get paid for any job. She knew that it wouldn't be much a first, but then what job would pay well when you are just starting out.

"Alright then," Drakus said cordially, "You won't be paid extra for the others with you. Quite frankly we see it as eventually necessary to work together, though maybe at this time just one of you will succeed. Who knows. For now, it's worth mentioning that the pirate captain should be found around the forest border, just outside of Wing City. I trust you'll all be able to find your way there...? The sooner you bring her here the better. And do be careful."
