Sarus's Story

Out onto the Eastern Crossroads came a Bird of Paradise.

She was dressed all in black, and over her face was a metal mask that half took on the shape of a bird's face, covering all but her lips. She viewed the world behind the black glass that served as her visor. Over her arms, there was a red shawl, and in the middle of the shawl, a silver clasp. No one would ever guess it was actually a sling. Attached to her back, a pole arm.

She slunk next to a tree, close to the trunk, just as the boom of the crash reached her ears. She peered into the street, seeing two men, a woman, and...someone else down the street.

The woman's eyes widened beneath the mask, watching the dogs approach. The shawl fell from her shoulders as she gathered both sides into one hand. On her hip, there were three metal spheres, all of varying sizes from a golf to tennis ball. She picked up the one in between, placing it in the metal clasp in the sling. It fit perfectly, as if it were made for it.

It was easy to see that the man running toward them was being pursued by the dogs. It seemed some others had taken attention to it, as well. Perhaps this would not be a long, arduous fight, then.

Sarus walked up close, not twenty feet from Anodyne's position. She looked over to the woman briefly.

"You think fighting it like that'll work?" she asked her, swinging the metal sphere above her head. It whizzed as it picked up speed. Iron, eh? She had iron. This was plenty of it. The metal sphere.

Good.

"I dunno what you're planning to do, but I'm willing to trust you if you think you can take them. I've got your back, in any case."

She watched Pluto scuttle by, rolling her eyes. "Well, here's to nothing."

Suddenly, the metal sphere shot out of the sling, aimed right for the temple of one of the hellhounds.

Sarus loaded another, looking around for the beasts. She watched Anodyne go, and at once she could tell the woman must have been a force to be reckoned with. Good thing they were on the same side.

As far as Sarus knew, anyway.

She unclasped the pole arm from her back, letting it twirl once over her head before she watched Pluto run away.

To Anodyne, she spoke, "You're staying here to finish them, or chasing after the guy?"

A rock small metal ball would shoot down and knock the knife right out of the thief's hand. A black shadow fell right behind him.

"Oh, I have no qualms about hurting you now, sir." Came a voluptuous, smooth, feminine voice. If he were to turn around, a woman dressed in a tight black corset and pants, with a red shawl over her shoulders, would greet him. She had a mask on over her eyes and nose, so that only her scarlet lips could be seen. It was a bird mask, the beak curved over her nose.

"Leave."

The woman in the bird mask folded her arms. "I really do not think that was necessary." she said sternly, eyes narrowing beneath the mask. "He was leaving."

She strode right past the old lady to walk right up to the other masked vigilante fearlessly. She would have been right in his face.

"This isn't your terf. Perhaps you should leave."

"He was trying to steal her money, not kill her." she replied, whipping around to make sure the old lady was still there. "Run along, now. Don't worry, you'll be safe from here until you get home." she told her softly, edges of her lips pointing upwards in a smile.

She then turned back to the boxer with a scowl, pointing at him with a long, thin finger. "There isn't room enough for two pf us!" she hissed.

"No! This messes everything I've worked for up! I've been doing perfectly fine on my own!" She took a step back, the sound of heels clacking on the pavement. "I'm going to go look for someone else who needs help. I better not see your face again!"

She then ran off in the opposite direction, the red sash billowing out behind her.

The man would be raised into the air very suddenly and thrust into a wall, where he fell unconscious once again.

A woman in black and red fell behind Oddface, arms crossed, mask hiding her displeasure. "You should be a little more careful, don't you think?" she snapped.

"I saw a sport of trouble, though it looks as though you got here first. I was hoping to not see you around here again. Alas," The woman shook her head. Her heels could be heard a mile away as she circled him.

"Though, my efforts weren't in vain. I traveled here to save someone much...much different."

"And as many crimes as there are, fate just happened to want to throw us together at the same one," she told him, coming to a stop in front of him. "I don't even think we've been properly introduced. What is your name?" she asked, eyes searching him beneath the mask.

If only she could manage to get his off. Turn him in. Then she would not have to bother with him anymore.

"Sarus."

The name of a red crane. Very fitting, given her long legs and apparel. "I'm willing to bed Oddface is your alias. If that's your real name I think I'd be a bit surprised."

She paused suddenly, head lashing to the side. Her eyes narrowed. She had heard something off in the distance.

The woman reached for the pole-arm hanging at her back, spinning it above her head. The blade sang as it whizzed through the air. "There it is again."

Click, click, click. Click, click, click.

She looked around, trying to find the source of the infernal sound. She spun upon hearing it right behind her.

Sarus backed up quickly, holding the polearm out toward the dark alley behind her. The clicking, continuous. Ongoing.

"I don't see anything," she said.

Right on cue, a broken streetlight flickered on. There, around the corner of the building, two beady eyes stared back at them both.

"A...ragdoll?"

The thing was indeed a ragdoll, scarcely a foot high, with straw pointing out of its head to emulate a wild head of hair. It simply stood. And watched. And after a few seconds, it disappeared.

The woman furrowed her brow.

"I think I agree." she told him, walking down the alley, soon arriving at the street. "So, as a vigilante, are you perhaps after someone specifically, or just scoping out random crimes?" she asked him.

"More or less the same. But I am following a case." She turned around to look him over, sighing. "A few months ago there was a serial killer running around. Every week, people of the same name were found missing or dead. They went down the alphabet. Stopped at the letter R for Rick. Strange abominations from sewn-together corpses began to show up at the same time. However, all activity suddenly stopped about five months back." She paused, letting it settle in.

"Thought it was over, but...there's been reports of them coming back."

"Indeed. But that's the case I've been following. I'm going to try and find who's behind this. I'm going to stop them before a repeat of what happened last time can occur."

She about faced, then looked down the street. "Just last week there was a murder. But I don't have any leads to pull me in the right direction. I keep trying to catch these creatures in action, but they're always gone before I can get to them."

She balanced the pole-arm upon her shoulders, letting her wrists fall limp over it. "I don't know. At first I thought you'd get in my way, but perhaps you could be useful. If you do find anything like that, I'd like to know. Or any mutilated bodies on the street. Anything strange. We can't allow this to keep on happening. If you're trying to help Wing City like you say, then you know exactly what I mean."

"I suppose a rendezvous point would be useful. I start from Side Alley near Gambit's before I go out and scope the city. We can meet there at a certain time. Perhaps at eight, when it gets dark," Which was truly the only time she could go out to do anything. Especially...with her little burdens.

"How does that sound?"

Sarus nodded.

She was pleased. Especially since she had asserted a position of control whether he knew it or not. "I'm going to go ahead. I have some business to attend to some other place. Do not follow me."

She began to walk off in the other direction, looking back only once.

"I'm sure he'd like that. But he'll have to be disappointed."

The chain would be tugged out of his grip and land onto the ground as a knife was thrown right through one of the loops. A metal ball connected with the head of another, effectively knocking him out. A third was lifted into the air by an invisible force.

A woman walked calmly down the street, wearing what seemed to be a black leotard with netted leggings. Around her shoulders was a red sash, and upon her face, the bird mask. She had one hand raised and clenched into a fist toward the man hovering in the air.

"You like being alive, don't you?" she purred, "If you do, I think it would be wise to start running. Right now."

The woman quickly flung the man she had holding in the air up onto a fire escape, discarding him without a second thought. She then approached Oddface, kneeling down next to him. "How hurt are you? Can you stand?" she asked tenderly, reaching out one hand to support his head, "Turn your head to the side. Don't want you choking on your own- mask?"

She rose a brow underneath her own mask, eyes tracing the ground. When she found what he was talking about, she went terribly still.

Her eyes came back to him. "Oddface?" she asked, jaw dropping open. "Spirits. We have to get you to a hospital."

"Yes, it's me, it's me." she told him, rolling her eyes. She heard the question of his mask.

"I...it's here," she said, lifting her hand and beckoning the object to her. The mask lifted in the air and floated, rather shakily, towards her until she was able to grasp it within her hand.

"You just basically vomited blood. I think the hospital is the right choice after what you just went through." She handed him the mask, but then looped one arm around his waist, "Here, I can help you there. I won't let your identity out. It's fine. I won't even look at your face. But you can't go home like this."

"I have an elf that can heal, but she's busy with two children," Sarus answered, giving him the smallest smile as she gently tried to lift him up. "We can get there. What do you take me for? I've got enough muscle."

She would loop her arm under his legs, the other at his back, to carry him bridal-style. A move terribly emasculating for most men, but Sarus did not seem to care either way. If he did not raise a fuss, she would walk right off to the hospital.

Which was hardly very far. "I won't turn you in. You haven't pissed me off too much."
