At the age of eight, Tomás was comfortable with his independence from the rest of the world. However, when a fatal disease quickly spread throughout the slums, the young boy lost many people he care about, including his simple-minded parents. This was by no means his first experience of death, but it would turn out to be his greatest. Tomás himself fell gravely ill with the sickness that plagued his home. The starving boy accepted his fate as he crawled into a narrow alley to sleep forever, only to wake up with a large black cat sitting on his chest. Delusional, Tomas thought it was Death itself waiting to collect his soul. Yet the boy recovered enough of his strength to stay alive. Throughout the days, the cat would periodically return to the dying child with food and lick to boys skin as he sleep. Soon the illness passed through the slums; but not without taking the lives of everyone it had infected, everyone except for the child. After Tomás got better, The strange cat continued following the skinny boy through the slums. Eventually, Tomás named his new friend Gato De La Muerte, or Morty for short.
After eleven years in the slums, Tomás was quite adept at several survival skills that proved worthy so many times over. The boy was almost a master pick-lock and a rather talented pickpocket as well, although he used these often, he was never caught in the act. Tomás quickly learned how to be efficient at evasion and distraction if only to avoid people because he didn't want to talk to them. However, there were unavoidable moments where his combat skill were called upon. Although fighting wasn't his strength, Tomás was quick on his feet. still, when that didn't prove good enough he never hesitated to fight dirty. Being a small skinny kid, Tomás didn't look very threatening. So whenever he did get in fights, he made sure his opponents were an inch away from death or a mile away in a minute. The boy was fast, and he didn't mind using his speed to create distance between him and certain defeat.
