Setting
Traffic is still a problem during business hours, but the paving of new lanes of traffic and the progress of construction on damaged buildings has made it much easier to travel through the area.
The area is still home to many businesses, banks, and various cafes and coffeehouses to serve the businessman on the go.
Past business hours the makeup of the business district becomes more shady, biker gangs of all kinds using the quiet area to ride around and sometimes harass people enjoying the late-night scene.
However right now he had a busted arm, with the old man gone the Emperor began to channel his psychic might to return to the Imperial fleet. He had an empire to rebuild. His form was soon dissapering. The Imperial Guard can return to their civil duties here.
Among the ruins of the business district black hooded figures walk quietly between and through wreckage. They pour into those blasted constructions through cracks as black pools draining inside. Nothing held them back and no valuable things of Humankind were left behind. Neither the ruins of important devices or its people. Each took pains to weigh almost nothing while traversing broken structures as even scraps of paper refused to crinkle under their dusty foot falls. A quiet demeanor left doubt that they were actually there at all. Though they could sense and hear the calls of the broken or the damned their turns to silent investigations of such things revealed them as more than mere hallucinations.
Inside one such rickety construction was found a raging tained Humankind raging mindlessly toward the sky. What was once Humankind could not be recovered. A four and eight-many Jinhai rounded a blasted doorframe into a destroyed office. The eight-many had to duck below the doorframe to see.
"The Tainted cannot be recovered. The Mada are occupied, Jinhai.", Said eight-many with its eight grey-burning stars for eyes.
"As it must be, " Said the four-many Jinhai a palm of sharp green light rising, "Myrkul's Vein cannot allow the tainted to persist at this time. Tainted Humankind, you must be extinguished."
Violent scream of green shards and sharp psychic words lit the inside that office made rubble. It cut into the writhing bloodied human with black ichor dripping from a trapped foot. Even more so as the screaming green beam cut into his flesh pouring deconstructive words inside the creature. The psychic engrams poured into bits of flesh turning it into glowing threads of psimass as useless taint and water boiled away. A deep gristled scream howls at at them from the tainted until the beam tore holes in its lungs. Neither move nor hesitate their psi-seeds designed too bland to support such weakness to Demonkind. The creature's leg deconstructed however and it tried to lunge. Far too late for it the creature simply fell into a heap of psionically decomposing matter. The Jinhai walked over it swirling a hand to change the emissive green beam of light into sudden lucent smoke like a tornado now cleaning the creature's existence away. Eight-many extended a hand to collect the decomposed psimass for later use as it snowed glimmering threads upward from the green malestrom. In time all but an ichorous blot left behind to mark the tainted destroyed.
Eight-many centered a number of its eyes then leaned in to inspect a hole just inside the office entryway wall. The grey burning eyes spied a human one staring out at them. The Humankind makes a piercing cry though looking at each other are equally unsure if it is anger, fear, pain, or pleasure. Each is beyond them as creatures of the empirical. Eight's twice-large hand erupts in that same green balefire as it plunges into the structure like so much clay. The reinforced brick wall falls apart under Eight-many's touch like the roll of ten thousand years. The noise continues from the Humankind as brick dust emerges from a growing circular arc a human's size. Four-many waited patiently among the piercing tones until a suitable hole was available to interact with the Humankind. Jinhai Eight-many took hold of the divot from the top as his other hand separated it from the structure.
"Get away! Don't kill me! Someone help!", the Humankind screamed.
They both looked about for a threat though they saw nothing. Four-many Jinhai spoke first crouched in front of the door as it steps inside leaving not the barest trace upon the brick dust.
"Are you injured, Humankind?" Four-many asks as Eight-many pours sideways into the hallway to look on from behind
"What?! What? Who are you!", The Humankind backs toward a door clearly perturbed by a weight on the other side. Four-many's eyes dart downward and inward to peer in detail at a rivulet of blood from the Humankind's leg. It noted she was unable to stand and inwardly writ it upon the mindspace inside the Almanac for this Humankind. Jinhai Eight-many simply read it thinking it not immediately important.
"We are Jinhai," Eight many answers, "You are Humankind. We serve the Living Emperor of Humankind. Do you require edibles and water?"
It took the Humankind's mind several seconds to form its thought as discordant as the inside appeared to be. Both Jinhai simply stared at her waiting for the Humankind to finish forming its concordance. Her breathing slowed and spoke with a lower volume if jaw slightly agape, "I... You...You're those creepy guys that follow those imperial guard around. Fuck!"
Her face upturned and made haggard noises with closed eyes. Four-many Jinhai moved closer inside the room legs bending in ways devoid of bone. The four sparks moved independently to inspect the Humankind. A short conclusion among her pulsing noise was that the whole thought the mind of that Humankind seemed more concordant than it was. At least the emerging pale field it now projected was less receptive to taint. Eight-Many agreed among the Almanac that the Humankind's recovering resistance tended to preclude severe corruption.
A small Green spark appeared on four-many's finger as it sliced the Humankind's covering free to inspect the wound. This gained a presence of mind from the Humankind of offense though it rapidly diminished. The flesh of the Humankind's leg was discordant or hewn and the mind conductance disrupted. None of the energy tubes were damaged. It now knew that much of Humankind's biology and that it was good. It had to stop the peripheral leakage from discordancy or corruption would destroy the leg.
Her voice was sharp, "Hey! What are you doing! I, oh, right. Can you not put my leg back together with dead people? I hope this doesn't hurt."
The Jinhai looked at her to acknowledge the Humankind answering her single actual question simply, "We require no more material to repair you."
The Jinhai's hand issued a lucent grey smoke as they pushed fluid-fingers into the wound. The Humankind made a loud noise at the structural violation but it was a necessary to facilitate concordance. Individual motes ran to and fro across muscle fibers. Utterly annihilating the foreign biotics that assailed the Humankind. A tide of black motes searing away films of munching creatures. They gripped flesh with small pincers hauling canyons of flesh back together to join with a charged fuse manifold at the centerpoint. Each canyon met its fabric of torn space and the motes poured out as the fleshy earth regained a healthy red hue. This structure was heavily concordant and had few other things inside it. They found it easiest to repair but there were some spots they had to stitch together with small illuminated strands of psimass like hollows of cobweb deep below the earth of her muscles. The host body would reintegrate the mass to flesh soon enough. Jinhai extracted its burning hand instead cupping his left hand over the wound's outside to clean it of biotics and strengthen the outer flesh.
The Humankind's face was dirty while she still writhed and clutched above pale new skin onto four-many's left hand. Its right brushed a hand across the taut face to inspect that. The noises were loud but not speech so four-many waited patiently while doing its work to inspect the seat of Humankind.. Eight-Many busied itself slowly manifesting a clean container within which to manifest fluid for the human while they waited for her to stop writhing. Four-many cleaned the taut wet face momentarily peering inside the loud mouth hole.
A few moments after it was done the clean-faced Humankind opened their eyes and ceased making loud noise. The Humankind was again prepared to interact. Eight-many reached in with its huge gloved-hand and placed a small earthenware jug full of cherry juice on the floor. Beside it arrived a plate with perfectly sliced bread. Four-many looked on as it put its fingers through her hair organizing the strands and cleaning the scalp while looking for injuries. The throne of humankind was the most important piece they were not permitted to tamper with. She looked sideways at his groping arms then up at the four-eyed creature whom returned the gaze with only one of four eyes.
"Hnnng, that goddamn hurt! But uh, thanks. Could you stop fondling my head?", she asked with a twinge of caution seen by Four-many in her psychic subsurface.
It let go and with a fluid plop reorganized its body to a sitting position. The humankind needed to eat before they could evacuate it. As she looked worriedly between them they waited attentively and patiently for the Humankind to finish eating. Of the three individuals staring, only one was disconcerted.
"Attention all that hear! We are the Imperial Guard. Those that are still around please clear all buildings and come to us! We are here to return this place to its rightful glory!" A loudspeaker spoke as a chimera with dozer blades began to slowly drive across the roads with a small contingent of guardsman and a few Lemen-Russ Battle Tanks with dozer blades.
First the Guardsman searched any collapsed building for any survivors or corpses and brought them out into awaiting Chimeras. After the building was deemed clear the tanks began to demolish the buildings, afterwards open top trucks parked nearby and any available soldier began to work together to clean the rubble.
More and more Imperial soldiers and vehicles arrived in the area, some with vital supplies for the survivors. "Attention civilians, we express our sorrow to your lost homes and loved ones. We are here to get you all on your feet until we have rebuilt the city. You will all be issued to civilian centers for the time being, there you will be served food, water and any medical aid until you can all return home." Guardsman spoke with loudspeakers however one squad spoke together.
"Hey, did you hear that they decided to bring some Sisters Of Battle on the planet?"
"Really? That means they are planning to build some churches huh?"
"Yeah, they are being sent to the centers first. My guess is that they might be planning to convert the people to the Imperial Cult."
"Well, they are like angels...angels that burn everything that is. I have no doubt the people right now could use something to hold onto while we fix the city. Things need to change..."
"No doubt about that, heard Cain himself is planning to announce a election. Try to become govener of the city and finnaly place the Imperial flag high."
"Emperor be praised...lets get back to work, I feel invigorated now."
The Imperial forces in the area went to heavy work. Clearing entire blocks of wrecked buildings and were already beginning reconstruction. They also noted the Jinhai around the area, loosk like they were helping around.
The large black-robed creature walked slowly its legs elongating to meet the ground not bobbing like a boned creature. The sixteen eyes held stock still locked in groups looking at the closest guards as the body flexed to move the whole about. Its huge pace didn't take long to cover the ground between them. The bags of thinner psi-stone cases gleamed bone-white but rattled wetly.
Its voice echoed deeper in a larger dusty throat among the indistinct face with constellations of eyes, "Do you have more destroyed, Humankind of the Living Emperor? We require more viable parts to rekindle who remain. Time wears thin."
The minimum concordances of human size, four-many, with which the guard were likely more familiar rounded the corner far behind the sixteen-many. Some among them carried six mostly-reassembled corpses in their arms. Each corpse of different body types and one of the guard itself. The bodies issued white wisps of smoke as Jinhai maintained a sterile presence away from biotics but even apothecaries of last resort ran on borrowed time for the thrones of the mind grow more discordant. Some Jinhai began drawing six stasis machines out of psimass and metal while others sifted through the rubble for organics to scavenge for raw material to digest and replace what they used.
Far above near the face of a damaged high-rise a four-many Jinhai drifted as a 10' long hollow segmented worm downward to the ground. Along the side of a building drifting silently in slow, lazy, circles there was a female astride its back. There was a scream as someone threw another from inside at the four-many. The rear end diverted to catch the new arrival with a splatter of motes that disincorporated its hind end. They floated like like flotsam to its top service dragged across the black reforming fluid to stack with the other survivor. The eight-many Jinhai darted to what few survivors they'd found and repaired quite literally tossing to each other the reasonably healthy. Eight many itself had moaning injured glued to its body that required attention they hadn't parts for. Thankfully much of the building interior had holes and the Jinhai could proceed around effectively.
Four-many paused a moment in mid-air though the two arrivals did not particularly seem happy about being suspended stories above pavement in something that felt like a cloud made out of silt clinging to flesh. Several very loud green flashes thundered as the Eight-many Jinhai found itself among a few of the tainted. Broken and without their king the tainted that remained but abandoned were no less a threat to the injured. Eight many ignored the howls of fear that turned into weak battle cries as it disincorporated the tainted. They had neither fear nor wrath much less pride for for such.
Of course, Imperial Guardsman continued to clear debree and began construction on the buildings. Of course...they saved a small section where a church for the Sisters Of Battle would set up. They needed a place after all when the city was finished rebuilding. "There should be many more dead being hauled around here. If their life can keep the life of those still alive on their feet than do what you can. This planet needs to change, and we shall be that change! Emperor be with you Jinhai. Its best we continue our work." The Guardsman captain saluted as he ordered the man around.
The Jinhai left the Humankind to their work on creating a locus upon which to rekindle mankind. A place of clairvoyance into the bodies of the broken for Adolefactus in the distant locale of Genesis. The stasis beds completed apace but a few of the normal-sized four-many first began harvesting natural stone from debris piles of the guard. The natural stone aided their work of which there was not as much to glean with but they found enough. The stone-bound psimass was mostly granite and marble from facades. Concrete was an amalgam sand lime and gravel to which Psimass weaving took poorly. They hadn't the interest to perturb the vast sums of concrete into something more suitable. Once the foundation stone was in place began assembly of the conductance channels that formed the contact points at each corner that four-many Jinhai would use regulate each face of the altar for sixteen-many. The core pillar was a thing slowly woven in strange angles with strands that emerge from each finger of the sixteen many like thin strands of prismatic silk from a spinnerette. They formed interlacing interference patterns among stone concreted into the central stone pillar.
The four-many Jinhai decorated the movable, if heavy, structure with reliefs of the emperor and patterns they'd learned from imperial constructions. Along the outer rim appears in High Gothic, "Nothing is wasted that returns unto the Living Emperor."
Distantly above the four many continued its downward spiral to carefully deposit its riders down to the ground. The six many appears from the ground floor after having leapt from hole to hole down most of the structures. There's a shuffling movement behind it just ahead of a field of gore. The six-many laden with worried faces sticking out like flotsam grabs a large stone column to block the entrance. The six many moves over to the imperial guard then slowly disgorges the six injured people barely triaged to not bleed to death inside the Jinhai. The Jinhai didn't treat living Humankind.
Matter-of-factly the six-many would tell the nearest guard pulling the injured free of its eight foot sandy flesh, "Tainted populate the building. We are unsure if there are more Humankind inside."
Coasting smoothly to a halt hoewever Crane felt something off, something felt wrong. Myrkul had said it itself, she wasnt tied doew to the rules of what it called aetherkind, she was a Goddess after all. no rules, Just herself, her wen, and Rick.
Oh no Rick! her mind went to thinking, was Rick safe ? yeah, when she left him at her home he was. Was he still there ?
It didnt matter, mere thought of Rick made her smile, he was safe.
But the same couldnt be said for herself! Out of nowhere she heard voices, stepping from the Wen as the driverside 'door' faded open allowing her to exit smoothly she looked around the street. Where were the voices coming from ? the Wen seemed to cower slightly behind her as her sword faded into her hand as she looked around for the owner of the voices.
"Who is there ?" Crane called out, her melodic voice, now amplified by her newfound power, had a rather commanding tone to it. Her armor fading onto her body without a sound, the pearlgreen and black steel meshed seemingly into her body without a sound or sign of pain or blood.
But Crane was freshly born.
"I'm afraid none of it will help you against me, however. I have come to do two things, Crane." he spoke, not taking his eyes off of his delicate process. "The first one is to welcome you to God-hood, I'm sure you must feel very powerful and proud of yourself. The second is to take away your high horse before you get on it: There are rules to being a Diety."
He blew on his nails softly to remove the built up dust, then continued. "First rule is simple enough: Don't interfere in Mortal Affairs. Second Rule, too: Don't interfere in the affairs of other Gods without just reason." he explained. "Most other rules are just sub-rules branching off of those two. Proper manners are usually appreciated when talking with your fellow Gods, particularly since you're the new girl on the block. Age and the like, I'm sure you understand."
He then cleared his throat and lowered his feet onto the floor of the Wen-mobile. "Am I understood?" He was not speaking down to her, nor up to her, nor even on an even field. He spoke as a father would speak to his daughter, yet his words held much more weight to them. It was almost as if his words were law. He'd seen the rise and fall of many Deities, the falls of which often occurring by his own hand, based on the strangely monotonous, yet melodic tone in his voice, and the calm look on his face.
He did hope however that Crane would cooperate and simply follow the rules.
She felt no anchors, nothing pulling at her or holding her back as she looked to where a man was watering plants at a flowership, just looking towards it made the flowers he was watering bloom. Crane laughed then when the man looked her way, her sword aimed towards the ground, he bowed towards her in greeting, she waved.
Finally she said simply. "What rules ? I feel no anchors, nothing holding me back. I feel only the path set before me." She turned towards her Wen, the poor thing was visibly scared at the sudden arrival of Spiral in the briefly nonexistiant passenger seat. her sword up and close to her eyes, she breathed on the blade, using her sleeve to clean off what had to have at one point been her own blood on the blade. the crane etching shined brightly.
"Please step out of my Wen, you're making it nervous" She said then, simply just asking nicely for once rather then bartering for something. She trusted this man was kind enough to do so when he looked at her when she said she wasnt tied to any rules, she felt no anchors, nothing was holding her back, heck, making the fglowershop owner happy..... that was interfereing with mortals right there.
For all he knew she just broke a rule. Crane smirked "All my life I helped others. Gave many beautiful things, flowers, fresh water, clothing, green grass, warm days... Fire for warmth in the winter. How can you say then I cannot continue to do as I have always done for others ?" It was a simple question sure, but the mere movement of making the flowers bloom brightly as the flowershop owner was watering them was a solid way to get his attention.
But then she was confused, "Who are you ? Should I know you from somewhere ?"
"The Interference I speak of mainly applies to the creation of demigods, the taking of sides in conflicts between those who worship you, the interference in a mass loss of life." He was staring straight at her now, his purple eyes back-lit by what appeared to be billions upon billions of stars. His gaze was all seeing, all-knowing. It was piercing yet blunt, it saw her for what she was, what she had been, what she could become, and for what she was down in her core.
He wasn't unimpressed with what he saw.
"We are all bound to the rules of the Void, Crane. Even myself. I did not create them, but I do enforce them. You are A deity, you must abide by the rules or I will be forced to reduce you to Mortal Level once more. This is not a threat, this is not a promise. This is a fact." He ignored the request to leave her vehicle. All in due time. "What this creature, the Wen, the Myrkul, has told you about your immunity to the rules of Gods was simple ignorance. Not all Gods are "Aetherkind" as it calls us, you will find this out. Sooner or later you will feel a pull to a place you've never been to, but know all the same: The Citadel of the Gods. You will find that you are not the first Goddess of your kind, nor will you be the last. I am not the first God of Space, nor am I the last. I am however, the rule-keeper."
His head twitched slightly to the side by a few millimeters, as if he were listening to something in the distance. "I must leave you. If you need to reach me, you'll know how. Remember the Rules of the Void, and be a good Deity."
The Wen were dutiful creatures and tended the Almanac which was as much their own long-term memory as much as it also belonged to their Overbeing. Myrkul's Vein asked the more advanced Wen to quiet its objections and to listen carefully for such recording. Myrkul's Vein certainly was paying attention to this particular section given the edge case it so recently permitted to leave with a vastly modified Wen. And so it learned from this new exception that these Aetherkind were not explicitly bound as were the divine agents of Ao.
Still, it saw no reason to categorize this new Aetherkind 'Spiral' differently through it agreed that neither Aetherkind Crane nor 'Spiral' were either Celestialkind or Abyssalkind. They lacked the tethers that came with existing deities those terms contained. It would wait to clarify their nature for subbeings upon gaining further information.
A moment later it tasked Jinhai to seek the knowledge of 'rules of the void' and 'Citadel of the Gods'. Someday it surmised subbeings would be called to battle there when a deity clashed with the will of the Living Emperor. Preparing was prudent. Now, however, it had good cause to believe these Aetherkind could die not merely be contained in perpetuity. Certainly if so such weapons must already be recorded to exist between them if so. Aetherkind it found capricious and discordant certainly some deaths must have already been recorded among them.
Elsewhere, one part of the request by Myrkul's Vein began with a confluence of eight-many Jinhai to consider a new construction on Genesis. Necessary structures to inspect the lowest layers of Genesis to later construct defensive military structures thereupon. Depersonalization spires would likely not even hinder lesser deities long unlike most other beings whose minds they paled. Myrkul's Vein would have to acquire a specialist.
But when Spiral looked at her, he didnt see, her. No, what he saw, were the Pearls. Objects of pure power, tied to nothing but themselves, Keeping the elements in proper harmony, Guarding the Portal way. the pearls had chosen Crane. And she willingly handed herself over to them when she jumped into the volcano.
Crane never thought for herself, other then as a child like most kids did, but after defeating her most hated and sought after challenge, Crane learned over time to help others that needed it. To the point most reveered her as someone speical. But the Pearls were a factor that she became a Goddess.
Crane was tied to the Pearls. When he finally stepped out of her Wen she felt it ease a bit, but it seemed to watch attentively in the case she needed something. If it came to it, Crane could fight. But Spiral reminded her too much of her beloved grandfather. So all she could really do was talk back to him.
His eyes narrowed at the sight of the Spirit portals, and he briefly he considered reaching to touch one, but decided against it. He blinked after a long moment. [b][i]"You are...different. I will return when I know more about your....particular Godliness. Until then, try not to break any rules." he said calmly.
And like that, he was gone. One blink later, and he was gone, as if he never existed to begin with. There was no sound, no hint of magic or of energy, just gone. Nothing. Void.
What ?
Crane sigjhed, she felt with Spirals leaving the Wen calming, the distress turning tro concern for Crane as she stepped towards it and gently rested a hand on the hood, her armor fading away without a sound as she gently brushed some pollen off of her Wen, it chirp-chirped at her and she smiled "ready to wake up ? sweetie ?"
The world went white at her question
"Come, Agares." He smiled at the armored soldier beside him. "It's finally time for us to depart."
"Yes, sir." The alpha trooper nodded before escorting the aged businessman to the waiting hovercar.
