Q: So, why don’t we start with something simple - go ahead and give us the basics.
A: Oh - well. River Sideras, local hottie. Stay away ladies, this Greek boy is taken. He’s a New Yorker at this point - I mean once you’ve lived so long here I feel like you’ve earned the title. He’s from the suburbs originally but he’s been here almost as long as me now. We just celebrated his
t h i r t i e t h birthday. He was not excited one bit...

Q: Anything that drives you mad about them?
A: [*laughs, glancing at River beside them*]... is this a trick question? No, of course there are things! It’s only human. You spend so much time with someone they’re bound to drive you up a wall at one point or another. Between being on tour and literally living together, we spend a lot of time together. Eventually you learn to coexist in peace so the things that bother you eventually fade.

It sounds like a good problem to have but honestly River can be a bit extra at times. He loves so hard and I’m so blessed with it - but not everyone is deserving of it…
at least in my opinion.

He’s much more trusting than I am, though that’s not saying much. I’m more the type to tell people to prove their worth in order for me to trust them. River has a more forgiving approach. I don’t know how he has it in him to keep giving people the benefit of the doubt but he does. It drives me mad, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit jealous.

Q: Oof - always hard to receive criticism, but you two are pros! Let’s change the mood, what about some strengths they may have?
A: Wow, how much time do you have? I could brag about my mans all day. [*laughs*] No, but honestly - it would take forever to list all the things. He’s multi-faceted, whenever I think I’ve figured him out I learn a brand new side of him. Not to mention incredibly generous, honestly - to a fault. When we first met I was so overwhelmed, he just wants to take care of the people he cares about. You should see him with his mom, it’s kind of the cutest thing ever.

Q: You two have known each other for quite a few years now. How would you describe the other’s general personality?
A: Phew, wow it should be criminal to be this vague. I mean, for one he is gregarious. I’ve never met someone who that adjective applied to more. He can honestly talk to any person about anything, it is a god given gift. I don’t think there is a person in this world who is invulnerable to his charm. I think he catches a lot of people off gaurd. Because he’s been famous for so long people have a specific idea about him….but he’s never that.

What’s most interesting is that even being as friendly as he is, he can still be a bit guarded. I mean it took forever for him to make his first move with me. I must have dropped so many signals that I wanted him to make a move - but you know how that goes. It’s hard putting yourself out there in general, River can be slow to do so but when he does it’s worth it.

Q: So other than making amazing music for yourselves and others, what talents do they have outside of music?
A: I mean - hard not to talk about his talent without mentioning music when he is so incredibly talented at music. Though - and this isn’t something I would mention on my own - he is so terribly proud of a recent feat. He….he learned to juggle. It’s ridiculous and as much as I hate to admit it, it is rather
impressive.

Q: Alright, you’ve probably told the story a hundred times but let’s hear it from you again River. How did you two meet?
A: [*sighs*]Well, the first time we met was just so random. It was this festival, I was on some tiny stage during the middle of the day. Only like ten people in the crowd actually knew my music, and two of them were related to me. River came back to say hello to me but it was so fast, I barely remember anything past sheer awe from meeting a literal rock legend. I honestly thought nothing of it at the time, I figured it would just be some fleeting moment….then he just kept showing up.

[*Alice looks over at River who is smiling unabashedly*] He was….legit obsessed with me. [*River laughs*] He started showing up at my shows - it was so random. Then after one show I had time to talk to him, we ended up linking up to re-record some of my songs. He had this little studio in the middle of nowhere. Every day we were working on that album I was waiting for him to make his move...then, one day - he just went for it.

Q: Now Alice, I would be remiss if I didn’t ask - what’s the tea on Midnight Vandals? A lot of our readers are curious, did this duo emerge from the fallout or cause it?
A: [*without skipping a beat*]I feel like we have been very clear about this from the beginning, we even made a whole album detailing the fiasco. The truth is that River was ready for something new, it just happened to time out with our relationship.

Q: So we know you guys have a dog, explain the others parenting style?
A: [*looks away, cheeks flushed with embarassment*] Well, it’s always tough to discipline something as cute as Sush - Sampson
(we call him Sushi), lord knows I can’t. River….tries, sometimes. To be honest, we just let the little guy run free. He’s our little sushi roll, he can do no wrong. Of course he has a fixation with River’s things, specifically his shoes. River takes it all in stride though, I don’t know how he doesn’t just lose his shit. I mean this dog has ruined thousands of dollars worth of clothes and shoes. It's mental. Honestly we shouldn’t ever be entrusted with children because we have no willpower against cuteness.

Q: Have you guys introduced the other to your parent’s yet? How’d that go?
A: Oh my - well, any Caribbean will tell you that was a whole ordeal in itself. My mother is very protective, as is River’s. They’re both single mothers so they are fierce through and through, and actually very alike in other ways as well. It’s complicated because of my mother’s own history, she’s justifiably cautious. All she ever wanted was the best for me and when she realized that it was River, she was 100% on board. She might love him even more than me now, she literally asks about him constantly.

Q: So what’s your process usually when writing a song? How do you decide which ones you keep and which ones you sell?
A: It’s pretty intuitive, actually. We do sort of default to specific roles. I am always writing lyrics, he is always fiddling with medleys - but we each do it all. Each song is different. Sometimes I start with a melody, sometimes he starts with a rift. To be honest he is better at production, but I try my hand at times. As for which songs we sell, which ones we keep - it’s easy. There are some songs we write that feel so deeply personal, it’s impossible to conceive releasing it to someone else. Luckily we always seem to be in sync in that respect. We always are writing in music so we are honestly never in shortage of songs to sell or sing.

Q: You two are honestly couple goals - though one has to wonder, do you two ever argue? How do you two handle it when it happens?
A: Of course we argue! Every couple does, it happens in any relationship romantic or otherwise. If you’re never challenging each other then what are you even doing? River is constantly challenging me. I would never leave my comfort zone if it wasn’t for him. Also just like any other couple we argue about random things because we’re human and sometimes humans get mad about stupid things that don’t matter and that’s okay. At the end of the day we know that we are the other person’s biggest cheerleader and that’s all that really matters.

So begins...

ImageAmsterdam had always been too crowded for Alice’s taste. The cobblestone streets were too narrow, the stairs too steep, the people too comfortable with tight spaces. Her passport was English but her preference for big open roads and large spaces was a result of becoming accustomed to American luxury. Her first time here she performed at some random coffeeshop for a Rasta-fest that opted for small scattered performances in local businesses rather than multiple proper concert stages arranged at one venue. It was way before she even met River, still just some girl with a guitar and a piss poor producer and manager.

River had made it his personal mission to make her fall in love with Amsterdam. He’d only vacationed here once, brought along with his best friend's family because they could never imagine a vacation without him. River had loved every minute of his time spent in the city and had been beyond excited to make her love it just as much. It was easy for him to make her love the city. Her love for him spilled into everything he touched. Suddenly she didn’t mind if the pathways were narrow, it meant she got to stand closer to him; steep stairs was just an excuse to put her ass at the perfect height for River to smack; tight spaces meant she could stand against him, pushing herself into him.

They’d rented a houseboat along the canal in the Jordaan district, just beyond the canal ring and surrounded by every world renowned museum in the area. It still had that too-small feeling that Alice felt in Europe but between the Dutch charm and her own personal Adonis in their bed the place had grown on Alice.

The festival circuit could be exhausting, the people lived at a different pace. It was fun in small doses but it could grow to be tedious without breaks in between. River was the one who suggested they arrive early and make a vacation of it, though Alice was pretty sure he was just keen on having her all to himself. It was fun to dive into someone else’s life, live in their home and go to their local market. She could imagine a life like this for them; on a houseboat eating pastries from the Nutella cafe and drinking coffee in bed.

ā€œLet’s just stay here forever,ā€ She whispered into the curve of his neck one morning, his arms squeezing to pull her in closer. He layered on kisses anywhere he could reach, eyes still closed tightly and unwilling to open for the new morning. River hummed in agreement, tucking her body against his and pulling the large duvet over both of them more.

The lazy mornings were Alice’s favorite, drinking coffee in bed looking out onto the canal basking in sunlight. They'd find ways to prolong leaving bed, one always pulling the other back in. Her body was a religion, his temple between the divine of her thighs. Alice craved the warmth of his skin, that contact of their bodies pressed against one another as she wound her hips against him...

Eventually Sampson would grow restless and begin to scratch at the door, begging to be taken on a walk. They might have never left that bed if it wasn't for him, though admittedly they probably wouldn't have to lock themselves away in the bedroom to fuck if they didn't have the pomeranian around to stare at them so damn intently. It was impossible for them to go anywhere without him though, he was a fixture in Alice's presence - hell, in the band's presence. He even had his own instagram account, both official and fan-run.

While Alice loved the damp and grey mornings, the sun warming the dew off the boats porch and the empty streets around their canal, River loved their nights. They’d gone out a few times during their stay, but River had mostly wanted this vacation so they could have a few moments of togetherness before the mayhem of the festival.

He kept their wine supply full, sometimes jumping off the boat in the middle of the night to grab another bottle from the twenty-four hour market nearby. Their canal was right next to a party district, so from their little pocket of warmth on the water they could hear the echoing sounds of bass and yelling. It was almost a welcome noise, a reminder of how comfortable they were in this moment. River had no interest in finding the source of the music, too wrapped up in the curve of Alice’s hip in his hand, or the cocoon of her hair around him when her mouth held his captive.

The boat had a few of a canal bridge, so the two would sit on the deck wrapped in blankets, Alice tucked in Rivers lap and Sampson curled against their chests, drinking wine and sharing a joint and watching the drunk tourists till the early hours of the morning. It was the kind of comfort that made River want to go get his guitar, but he also knew trying to write in the moment would ruin it. Instead he kept his mind as present as possible, letting the wine loosen his lips and hands so he could at least try and catalog every second.

It has almost started to feel like home to Alice. She'd looked forward to their routine. Amsterdam had in fact grown on her, much to her own chagrin. It was meant as a vacation but it felt closer to real life than they'd been in a while.

The Festival circuit tossed them city to city with little respite in between. Funny to think there had been a time where it all seemed so glamorous to Alice, now she'd do anything to just be able to live out her days peacefully on a house boat with River and Sushi Sampson.

ā€œI don’t know if I could manage going back to one of those trailers after this,ā€ She said to him on their last night, sitting on the back of the houseboat sharing a bottle of wine under the moonlight.

ā€œWhy doesn’t every trailer come with a shop for wine and weed 20 feet away,ā€ He agreed with her as he reached for the bottle between them, foregoing the glasses because neither of them wanted to do dishes, ā€œThey should add porches to those things, and softly lapping whatever. Better yet just have all the artists stay on the canal.ā€

ā€œI mean....can we?ā€ Alice asked, her face twisting with speculation. ā€œI don’t know if there’s anything in the contract or something that mandates we be on site.ā€

ā€œIā€¦ā€ He paused and glanced at her, blowing into the wine bottle for a deep whistle as he thought, ā€œWhy didn’t we think of that before? I can’t believe we were gonna leave this little piece of heaven for a party trailer in the middle of some field. I guess they think it’s easier and free but we don't have to at all.ā€

River grinned at her and leaned forward, handing back the bottle as well as an overly excited kiss, ā€œSo are you saying I convinced you of Amsterdam?ā€

ā€œMhm, you know no one likes a know-it-all,ā€ She smiled, her hand gliding across his jawline and gripping at the hair at the base of his neck pulling him back into their kiss. His hand had already moved to the small of her back, Alice pivoting herself against him. He gripped her thighs, leading them around his waist. The blanket fell from around her as he stood up, Alice wrapping her arms around his neck to steady herself. She leaned in, running her tongue along the side of his neck then biting his earlobe gently, River moaning beneath her.

Sampson yipped at their feet, jumping to get between them. Alice couldn't help but laugh as River tried to shoo him away, backing them into the bedroom.

"He probably needs a walk...." Alice said with regretful realization.

"He can wait." River grunted, slamming the door behind them.
